Monorail evacuation

I wonder if they gave the stuck passengers an "I'm sorry" gift when they got out. Like endless fast passes or something... That might almost be worth it!! ;)

They reported that the EPCOT monorail line was struck by lightning. They have a cherry picker evacuating guests.

And that my friends, in two very brief paragraphs, is the complete picture and explanation as to why there will never be a further expansion of the Monorails. In fact, I predict that within 20 years the Monorails will be history.
:sad2:

My guess is that it would take to long to get a tug out to them and they didn't want them in the Florida heat any longer than necessary. With no A/C those cars will heat up fast and then there is a real danger of heat related injuries.

As far as climbing out of the top and into a cherry picker...piece of cake. I was hanging off a 350' tower two days ago, no worries.

I think something else was going on. Because they normally for a stuck monorail they bring out the diesel tug and tow/push it into a station.

They REALLY don't like to evac people from the rail.
Was not in a location for tug use.

Disney is going to take away the monorails in 20 years because some chick made a bad (yet funny) joke on a disney chat board?? Damn - I have some amazing powers!!!! All I need is a lawyer, and a union plumber on my side, and I'll be able to rule the world!!!!!!!!!! pixiedust:

Wait, what about children or handicapped people? They can't climb out the roof.

I would need Xanax and Valium to get in a cherry picker. Knock me out.

I got stuck in a cherry picker once that was raised as high as it would go. I thought for awhile I would have to climb down a fireman's ladder to get out of the thing.

I think it would be an amazing experience provided no one was injured by the lightening. I would love to get evacuated through the roof hatch of the monorail.

For SOME well-seasoned Disney visitors it's probably like a once in a lifetime tour. KTTMEH

Keys to the Monorail Escape Hatch!

I can just envision the pin: a monorail with a roof top hatch opened and Mickey and the gang bursting out of the hatch like superheroes.

Hey that would be cool if the firefighters gave out firefighter Mickey pins when they rescue guests from such situations. Some folks probably would not appreciate that though. (I would!)

I'm scared of heights so this would be awful for me. I wonder how long they were stuck before they were taken out?

They aren't going to leave them in the monorail to roast in the heat. They have evacuation contingencies for everyone even if involves harnesses and winches.

I got evacuated off of a broken ski lift 100 feet up in the air while wearing skis (which got kicked off and tossed down) and ski boots. Getting out of a monorail sounds like a piece of cake.

From the pictures, it looks like the train stopped on the actual trackswitch that contains the motor that usually tugs or pushes a stopped train to a station. It must have stopped in just the wrong spot where moving the track to utilize the motor was deemed impossible.

I'd probably pay to do it. Especially if there were desserts involved.

Here's the Orlando Sentinel article:

Passengers were evacuated from the monorail at Walt Disney World Resort Sunday evening after a power failure, according to a Disney spokeswoman.

No one was injured in the incident, but about 120 people were evacuated from the six-car train, which stopped on the Epcot line near theWilderness Lodge, officials said. Some guests climbed out of the roof of one car and back down through another to use stairs attached to a monorail beam, said Bo Jones, assistant chief with Reedy Creek Emergency Services. Others were lowered on a lift with railings that was attached to a Reedy Creek fire truck.

The monorail shut down about 6:30 p.m. during stormy weather, but Disney employees were able to restart several other trains that were on the system and return them to stations, said Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger. The train that stopped and was evacuatedwas between the Ticket and Transportation Center and theWilderness Lodge, Jones said.

Resort visitors posted pictures of a ladder truck from Reedy Creek Emergency Services extended up to the monorail not far from Disney'sWilderness Lodge. Renee Wells of Valdosta, Ga., was on the monorail trainwith her family and took several photos before the evacuation, according to a cousin, who posted them on Twitter. The cousin, Kristin Barry of Charlotte, N.C., said that some passengers sang "Let It Go" from Frozen to pass the time. Wells and her family returned to the parks after the incident and were able to rebook their Crystal Palace reservations, Barry said.

One of Wells' photos showed that guests drew Mickey ears in condensation on monorail windows after the power went out.

Reedy Creek firefighters began evacuating passengers about 7 p.m., after several power restart attempts failed, Jones said. All of the passengers were evacuated by 8 p.m., he said. This was the first time in at least three or four years that a monorail had to be evacuated, Jones said. None of the passengers experienced any medical complications.

Finger said that guests were transported to their final destinations after reaching the ground. Disney officials will be working to move the train tonight, Finger said.
