Monorail Drink-A-Thon

I'm so glad there'll be a lush resort...

(dare I say it???)..... You're such a tease!! :rotfl:

I know, I know... I leave for a while, then come back, then disappear... you get the picture. I'm sorry I've been away. I've been totally swamped with work (did I mention I'm an accountant? and though I don't do taxes, my clients still need their books closed so they could file tax returns).

Anyway, I did manage to go to WDW for a few days during Spring Break. We ate at Akershus and, well, it was fabulous. DH says it's now his favorite restaurant. We drank Grolsch; a bit too bitter for me but very crisp. DH loved it. We stayed at ASM and liked it, but I prefer Pop.

We're going back for Mother's Day weekend (what better present for moi??) and staying at the Poly. I stayed there way back when there were only 2 resorts on property... yep, the 70's.... and I'm trying to figure out where to have dinner on Mother's Day. Any suggestions?
I will be there for Mother's Day too, staying at POP! I need suggestions too. I was thinking of Epcot, maybe Germany! :teeth: 17 days to GO GO GO! :Pinkbounc

Cristy!!!! Welcome back! I was just wondering about you...where you went and what you are up to these days! I am SO GLAD to hear a favorable review of Akershus. Were the princesses there? DH and I ate there about a year ago and absolutely LOVED it...they had the cold salad bar with all sorts of meats and pickled things...then you could order as many items off the menu as you wanted, one at a time. When I heard it was going to be all character meals, I was so disappointed. So tell me a little more about your experience there.

dvc member-That is a cute story! I can't wait til my little girl graduates college and I can take her out for happy hour or something like that. I still have not been to Jellyrolls but I keep hearing so many good things, I need to check it out.

Hi all, we'll be at OKW 4/22 for 8 nites. DW, myself, and 4 18yo boys. Any recs for drinks or a possible drinking "route" in this area? Just momma and me, the boys won't be joining us for drinks :smooth: We've never stayed in this area. I'm sure we'll be doing most of the monorail resorts bars this trip also. :drinking1

Hi nj! We will just miss each other, as we are checking into OKW on May 1st!

This is my first stay at this location, so i really am not to familiar with it. I know there is a cute bar at the resort called "The Gurgling Suitcase" that I plan to have at least one drink at. Other than that, I guess you best bet is to do the monorail drinkathon, or go to the World Showcase and drink around the World there.

Let us know , whatever you decide to do!

ETA: DUH! I just remembered...you may want to take the boat from OKW to Downtown Disney! You can go to Pleasure Island, or have drinks around DTD. Just make sure to find out what time the boat runs at night...don't want to get stuck there! LOL!

WLL,
It was not a character meal. I think they started a few days after we went. I tried almost everything in their cold buffet and loved it. My dd7 LOVED the smoked peppered mackerel (go figure! I was, like, HUH????). I think we tried almost everything in the menu. The salmon was fabulous. My DH had the venison and braised lamb and liked it, but I'm not into gamey meat. The poached cod was dreamy and the horseradish mashed potatoes were great (and I don't even like horseradish!). I also tried the pasta, but I shouldn't have.... it was obviously in the menu to satisfy finicky diners who don't like to experiment... it was bland, bland, bland. Oh, and I almost forgot! The meatballs!!!!! yummy! For dessert, I had the lingonberry tart... all I can say is... wow... it was great. Overall, we really enjoyed the experience and would gladly return.

Poohbear,
I was thinking Germany too! Let me know what you decide... maybe we can actually meet!

Thanks Cristy...then you had the same experience we had. I absolutely LOVED all the things you mentioned. Now I want to know if it is worth it to go back. I want to know if the menu has changed a lot...guess I need to do a search on the boards.

We did a mini "Drink around the Vacation Clubs" last October, starting at the Gurgling Suitcase at OKW. We were the only ones there. The bartender made some great drink recommendations and it was fun to look at all the memoribila on the walls. We then took the water taxi to the Saratoga Springs resort. We sat at a table by the On the Rocks pool bar for a couple, then moved inside to The Turf Club bar. Again, we were the only ones there. It is such a beautiful room and sooo relaxing. The bartender here had a list of drinks that they were getting ready to switch over to. I selected one off the list which turned out to be basically Sex on the Beach with a different name. This was my husband's first time to SSR so we explored the entire resort as well.

That is all bars we hit that day, but you could then walk (stagger?) or take the boat to Downtown Disney and continue! Have a wonderful time!

Well as much as I'd love to join the 'monorail drink-a-thon' I guess we'll just have to have our own drink-a-thon at Epcot. I can see it now:

First waltz to Canada and grab a ice cold beer, then hop over to England for half a yard of their finest, bounce over to France and check out their wines, stroll over to Japan and toss back a couple of Sake's, wander down to the good ole USA and have some of our domestic product, walk a little slower over to Italy for some of their wonderful selections, weave to Germany where I already know the beer servers by name, stumble over to Norway for some beer by a name I can't pronounce, crawl to Mexico for a margarita...and repeat :):)

Ahhhh...life is good ;);)

Bill
(getting thirsty just thinking about it)

ah good, a lush thread

this a good thread for me

:drinking1

16 days till I toss some back in WDW

***WLL frantically scribbling notes on dvcmember's trip***

That sounds good to me! thanks for the tips! Even though Gurgling Suitcase is "no big deal" I am looking forward to visiting it. I guess the DDE card is not valid here, huh? :sad2:

wildbill-sounds like a greta plan, although I have said it many times on this thread...I CANNOT mix booze! I pick one drink, and then i stick with it! Although ...what is that old saying?.."liquor before beer, never fear...beer before liquor, never been sicker!" I guess that is a good rule of thumb for the lushes to abide by.

Stiff-Enjoy! we will just miss each other! Have you stayed at the WL before? that is an incredible resort. Obviously (by my name) it is my favorite.

Sounds like a Plan! I have never eaten there, and will be alone, so maybe if I meet up with you, we can get a good seat. ;) PM me if you like, and we will set something UP! :Pinkbounc

I have not stayed at WL before...Ive been in the lobby years ago....after we saw it, we promised ourselves we would stay there someday

that someday is coming up quickly

Well, I finally made up my PS for this weekend. Since my dad works during the days on weekends and mom and dad are going on a cruise early on Monday, we decided to have Mother's Day dinner on Saturday at Portobello Yacht Club in DTD. Has anyone eaten there? I'm taking my mom, dad, sis, brother and of course, DH and DD7.

On Sunday, I invited my mom and sis to breakfast at Ohana's (we'll be staying at the Poly and I thought it would be cool for mom to have a character breakfast).

Dinner will be at Cali Grill, just DH, DD and I. We made PS at 9:20, which means we won't be there to watch the fireworks, but I was wondering.... since you're supposed to show up 15 minutes early to your PS... will they allow us to go upstairs around 9:00 pm so we can wait at the lounge and watch the fireworks?

I'm really excited about this trip and look forward to good wine and good food....

WLL: I just wanted to say ... have a great time on your trip!

I've heard that you can actually walk to POFQ from OKW along the side of the road. I guess you could also drive and leave your car in their lot until the next day. Perhaps you can start a DTD Lush Tour at POFQ have a drink in the little quaint bar inside, walk along the river to POR and listen to Bob Jackson ( check his schedule here: http://www.yehaabob.com/ -- turn your sound down first!!) then catch the boat to DTD. Grab a drink or two there and catch the boat/bus back to OKW.

Pinnochio: Excuse my middle-aged ignorance. I know what a beer bong is, but what the heck is a beer pong?

Stiff-That is how our family fell in love with the WL. As soon as we walked into the lobby we knew that it was THE place for us!

Cristy-Too bad we will miss each other! I have eaten at Portobello's and loved it. Now, I must admit that is does not stick out in my mind like Jiko, Cirticos or Artist's Point, but DH and I agreed that we would definitely return. The roasted garlic and bread they put on the table before dinner is divine! Mmmm...goes so well with a nice crisp chardonnay! Of course, just about everything goes well with a chardonnay to me! As far as the fireworks at CG...please let us know how it turns out. I know there is also the observation deck there, so maybe you can go there if not the lounge. But I cannot see why they would not want you up there spending money on a pre dinner cocktail!

Poohbear-You are just a few days away, too!

Robinb- You know how sometimes you don't post certain things, cuz you figure the person you are posting to already knows all about the topic? Well, that is NOT the case here! I TOTALLY forgot about the close proximity of POFQ to OKW. I really want to go to Jellyrolls, but I was thinking maybe not this trip, cuz DH and I don't want to be driving all over the world. Now, let me get some more info from you...what is the order of resorts the boat goes to that goes to DTD? Is it POR- POFQ- OKW? Is SSR in there somewhere? I know we will find all this out when we get there, but I like to have some sort of a plan in my mind!

Oh, I am gonna go out on a limb here...my guess is beer pong maybe some sort of drinking game. But now MY question to YOU is...what the heck is a BEER BONG? I know what a "Bong" is, but a beer bong? Is it like the funnel or something!

Just want all the lushes to know that I have my Captain Morgan Rum, club soda, limes and cans of beer (beer is for DH) all ready for the pool tomorrow! We will get to OKW early and we know the room may not be ready, so we are planning on lounging by the pool. I will have drinks at the resorts when we go out to dinner at night (I like martinis, but don't plan on mixing them up poolside LOL) Will they give me a hard time about making drinks at the pool? Can we take a cooler to the pool? I purposely bought CLEAR Capt Morgan Spiced rum, so as not to alert people to the fact that I am indulging in an alcoholic beverage...PLUS, I am putting it it a empty evian bottle. Am I clever or what? I bought the beer in cans, cuz I am sure they do not want glass by the pool. Oh, and BTW...weather report says 60% chance of rain. :sad2: That is not cool, dude! LOL!

Oh, just wanted to share...we are leaving WDW on Tuesday, and that day I am planning a surprise for DH. I got the idea from the boards! I am getting him a private golf lesson at Palm/Magnolia Golf Course! It is $75 for 45 minutes and will be videotaped. I am telling him some friends will be getting into WDW early in the morning Tuesday and the husband wants to meet him for golf. Heehee! I am so clever! He will be so surprised, especially since I am the one usually COMPLAINING about his playing golf so much!

Ok, I will check back later...hopefully Robin will check in again to answer my questions...or I may just post the question on the board or do a search.

Unfortunately, there are 2 boats. One for POR->POFQ->DTD and one for OKW->SSR->DTD. You can't get to Port Orleans from OKW unless you go to DTD. That's why I suggested you walk or drive and leave your car there. I've heard the SSR lounge is nice and I'm a sucker for horses. We're staying there for 6 nights in August after 5 nights at BCV. It's my DD's 6th birthday and our 12th anniversary. We don't own at either resort, but I got my BCV reservations right at 7 months and SSR just last week.

Here's a picture found in a Google image search:

The beer goes in the funnel and you drink it from the hose end all at once.

Well ... it is a "home away from home" resort ;). You should be OK. People bring drinks to the pool all the time. We usually drink out of our refillable mug ;).

Are you in a Studio? The larger units have blenders and if you're in a Studio you may be able to request one to be sent to your room :). We made yummy blended drinks when we were in the Grand Villa in 2004/2005 NYE.

How cool! I don't golf, but that sounds like fun .
