Monorail door falls off

Yes and no. If they didn't have a recent history of several incidents, both minor and major, I don't think people would be jumping to these kinds of conclusions.
I like to have all the facts first before going nuts at Disney.

Yes there have been incidents previously but that doesn’t mean the monorails are unsafe. If they truly were unsafe Disney wouldn’t allow guests on them.

People like to jump right to conclusions that this is all Disney’s fault. While not a great look either way this does seem to be more of a guest provoking the issue than the monorail being in disrepair.

While I don't doubt there was an ECV involved. Disney said the guest was boarding. I am trying to visualize how a guest driving an ECV up a ramp (with sides) and no runway to gain speed, could hit a sturdy metal door so hard to unhinge the door ............ unless the door was already weak and compromised. The condition the monorails are operating in - is completely on Disney and their responsibility.

I don't think anyone is really jumping to conclusions or going nuts. The fact is the monorails are way past their lifespan and have ongoing problems. Disney is going to continue to have things like this happen until the new ones arrive.

I believe with looking at the photos the door in question was on the opposite side of the loading so the ECV could have went up the ramp properly and then accidentally accelerated into the doors on the other side unhinging the one.

Like I said before if the monorails were unsafe they wouldn't be in use. Disney is aware of their issues and working on replacements. The current trains are completely safe for the time being.

I agree - to me the past incident where the monorail was traveling with one of the doors partly open is much worse than this

Here is the report I have...

A guest utilizing an ECV with a child in their lap lost control coming up the ramp and hit the door full speed. The door initially bucked from the train after the impact and the cast quickly deadheaded the car and notified maintenance. While trying to realign the door and secure it for the train to travel to MK for a further inspection the door came disconnected from the top actuator arm and fell down. There was no guests in the car at that time. From there the train was deadheaded and put out of service. Nothing failed on the train or was damaged. The door was pushed up during impact, the bottom actuator was bent up and the top slipped off of its mounting point.

Sounds like a guest induced incident. Not sure I see fault with Disney if the report(s) are accurate.

So, an apology is in order for all those naysayers who were quick to jump on Disney for lack of monorail maintenance.

That's the problem with the world today. It's not news if you wait for the facts to comer out and everyone wants to criticize somebody/something.

Not really. The monorail IS in some pretty poor repair. But you are correct, in this case it does not appear to be Disney's fault. Those of us that recognize the state of the monorail don't point out every time the monorails break down either, just the spectacular ones. It's a common occurrence these days that the monorails stop running for portions of days just about every week for one reason or another. Even Disney acknowledged this when they had to buy the extra tractor.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't jump on Disney for the state of the system that used to be the flagship of the Transportation System, that criticism Disney deserves but as we agree, it's not the case here. My beef is that before the facts came out, multiple people immediately jumped all over this, blaming Disney for lack of maintenance on the system, saying the monorails were unsafe. As we have found out, it was directly due to a guest striking the monorail door with significant force, while on an ECV, damaging the door mechanism.

So yes, those people should man up and apologize.

(paraphrased from another forum)

The door was on the "far side" whereby if someone fell out that side he would fall to the ground below.

The doors work somewhat like closet sliding doors and with linkage arms attached to sliding rollers just inside the top and bottom of the door jambs. The doors open outward slightly. Before the train can be moved it must be assured that any damaged door does not protrude so as to hit platforms or objects along the side of the track.

As a CM was adjusting the door later, the top slider linkage detached letting the door panel fall and hang by the bottom linkage, the latter probably deformed at this moment. It is not clear whether the top linkage broke or whether there was a small release lever intended for removing the door from the car that was accidentally hit.

If the linkage broke, most likely there would be an urgent program scheduled to quickly inspect all linkages of all doors of all trains to try to find similar defective parts.

Just out of curiosity - where do they stand on the monorail replacements? Are they actually in the works?

Ok. I have a new working theory.

Much speculation and to do has been made in various discussions about whether the Skyliner would prop up prices for Riviera as much as the cache and convenience of being on the monorail loop has propped up the prices for those resorts all these years. Perhaps Disney is purposely letting the monorail disintegrate so the Skyliner look even better by comparison and they can charge even more for Riviera than they did for VGF, BLT, and VPB.

Huh? Who's with me?

Was the driver given a breathalyzer? :teeth:
