Monkeypox

ABC news was saying it is seems to be affecting the LGBTQ community the most at the moment. :confused3

It's rather more specific than that. With the exception of the first case that turned up in the UK (a recent traveler to Africa), almost all of the rest of the cases outside of Africa have been traced to men who attended one of a couple of large convention-type social events in Spain and Belgium a few weeks ago. These were large events, with many thousands of attendees, and drew an international crowd.

I am not sure at what age you got the vaccination which is why I stated it that way. If your were born in say 68 would you have received it before they stopped them in 71?
Dh and I were born in '68.

We did not receive the smallpox vaccine.

As someone w/ anxiety & who worries a lot, for the past 2 years, I’ve had a constant thrum of anxiety just running under the surface related to the pandemic… sometimes, it ramps up, &, other times, it’s really low & almost non-existent, but still there.

But my brain only has capacity for so much, so I refuse to worry about monkeypox.
I went on anti-anxiety meds during the lockdown for the first time since high school. It's been very freeing.

I’m the exact same as you! I’m running out of gas at this point so I have to just let the monkey pox stuff go. Sounds like it only spreads with physical contact so I’m not gonna worry or think about it. At this point I think the media loves things like this because it gets their clicks up.

I saw this and am utterly astonished people are "frolicking" without using protection, we are 40 years and millions in investment dollars out from HIV so how is this even still a thing? I'm out of patience
Actually, epidemiologists don't believe they are doing that. It isn't an STD. This is happening by regular body contact, either by kissing or by touching against a skin lesion (which apparently are not really obvious just at first.)

Most kids got it at age 5-6, because it was required for public school. It was normal to get this vaccination at school, actually. The local health dept. would come and vaccinate all Kindies, and any older kids who had failed to get it earlier. I know at my school, parents were not notified ahead of time; they lined us up, stuck us, & gave us a card to take home that outlined any side effects to watch for. That was in 1967.

Yes, that is how I got it. They lined us all up and everyone got a shot.

I started first grade in 1961 and I remember getting the shot just before I started. The town I lived in sponsored a free vaccination clinic. Got the scar to prove it 😁

Ohhhh, so it moves like MRSA with wrestlers and other athletes. I really hope the schools are keeping up with their disinfection protocols or youth sports will be a problem because summer heat and humidity plus neglect of equipment - lazy uniform cleaning etc will come together to cause a mess.

Hopefully everyone is staying up with recent cleaning protocols 'cause eww.

Yep. Apparently it can also linger on fabrics for quite a while.

I'm not worried. I still take precautions. I'm one of the few masked folks in stores, getting sour looks, and unsolicited and false "medical facts" about masks that people learned from Facebook.

Already the Monkeypox conspiracy theories are circulating.
