Eh... I think it was, both for him and for us. We all discovered that Monk still (and likely forever) does best continuing in his role as consultant, that he doesn't do well operating under the rules and expectations of an official police detective. It's what he does best, and we can picture him continuing to solve difficult cases as he's been doing throughout the series.
