Mom's... Morning Sickness Help... PLEASE!!!

Hi Megs,

First of all Congrats! I'm pregnant right now too, 20 weeks, and I still have bouts of nausea:sick:. From weeks 6-9 it was absolutely misearble, and I tried everything, the ginger, saltines, sea bands, b6/unisom combination, and nothing worked! The sea bands helped a bit. You can get them at CVS. The only food that remotely helped was pickles and pickle juice. I know it sounds gross, but there was nothing better to stop my nausea than a good swig of pickle juice!

Anyways, I went for my first dr appt, and she prescribed me Zofran (8mg). I tell ya, it was a miracle drug. I could actually function throughout the day. Like I said, I'm still nauseous, but I am down to like once or twice a week on the Zofran as opposed to once a day. Hopefully you have an appointment soon.

Hope you feel better soon!

Michelle

Ugh, threw up for the first time today... Sorry, TMI! ;) Hot chocolate and peanut butter toast aren't too bad in reverse...

At least I feel a bit better... For now...

Another thing that is good is "coke syrup". You used to be able to purchase it at the pharmacy; it comes in a bottle like cough syrup.

Definitely don't let your stomach get empty. That's the worst. I would wake up in the middle of the night and have a bowl of cereal with a banana. In the morning I was much better. Of course once your morning sickness subsides you should stop this habit because I ended up gaining 60 pounds. Of course I've lost it, but those pictures from the end of my pregnancy were frightening!

Also, candied ginger (from the spice aisle) helped me a lot. I would nibble on it during the day.

My morning sickness wasn't that bad I had it off and on from week 5 through week 13 or so. I found throwing up did help me feel better as opposed to feeling queasy all day.

heck can't help you much.
Still going through the same thing... :rotfl:
What I found out is spot on with what PPs are saying:
1. Never let your stomach be empty, nausea will get worse
2. Ginger stuff sometimes helps
3. Heavy greasy food makes it worse too
4. Mint, mint, mint (unless your MS makes mint unbearable)
5. My OB says B6 although I found out that extra vit B reacts badly on me... so I can't use this. But most people say it helps
6. Find the one thing that you can eat and keep it in stock until you feel better!

I find that for me anything bland (bread) or anything with chocolate helps but not ice cream... (yeah, weird right?). So I have chocolate pop tart, chocolate pancake, chocolate hazelnut spread. Those are my main staples right now.
My OB says she doesn't care what I eat, just eat a little every 2hrs.

The smell of pizza made me gag for the first 5 weeks. So does the smell of most microwavable food... :lmao:

Good luck finding things that you can eat!

I was sick through my entire pregnancy with my first - even the smell of food would make me vomit and absolutely nothing helped. With my second it only lasted 'til my seventh month or so, aand then I was able to keep watermelon and plain pasta down. Good luck!

Eh, I don't have much to offer other than you will find out which foods taste better than others coming back up ;).

Yeah, with my daughter I chose meals based on how they would be coming back up again. I snacked on some baby carrots once and those tore up my throat coming back up. Soon enough I knew which foods wouldn't be too bad to relive and I'd just eat those. The only thing that seemed to help was gumballs, which were bad for my teeth but I had to work so I needed whatever I could get. I was on meds but those didn't work and this was before generic Zofran (and brand-name was crazy expensive) so I lost about 15 pounds in the beginning with DD. At 20 weeks I'd made it back to my pre-pregnancy weight.

With my son I didn't have nearly as bad a time. I was a little queasy with him but once I ate, it would solve the problem. With DD, it didn't matter - I'd be throwing up anyway.

I didn't know they make generic Zofran now. That's great! I know it was so grossly expensive. My insurance paid for all but, I think, $40 for something like 12 or 15 pills. It was crazy. I would have sold everything I owned, though, to pay for it. It was a God send.

When I was pregnant with DS3 it was still in the thousands for the name brand and my co-pay for a 10 day supply was $75. I was given a script for Zofran when I got e.coli poisoning recently and was shocked to see a generic of it (ondansetron) with a $3 co-pay. :thumbsup2

I vomited all 9 months with all ds13 and dd19mos. And I didn't vomit just in the morning-it was all day. It wasn't as bad with dd11. I tried several prescriptions, but nothing worked for long. It did help to snack on things like dry cereal during the day. I teach, and I would keep a box of whole grain cereal in my desk. I vomited the night before ds13 was born, and was hospitalized for several days in April before dd19 mos was born in May, for dehydration.

If I'm remembering correctly you aren't working right now? That would have to make things easier! My students were always really good. They knew when I went flying out of the room what was going on!

ginger ale, ginger candy chews(hot) and Big Red gum(too much can burn your mouth). I'm not telling you what I could eat cause you don't EVEN need to hear about food things right now. Good luck!

Unisom (a sleep aid you can buy in any store with a pharmacy section) and vitamin B6 was my miracle cure. In Canada, you can get a prescription for a morning sickness drug that is literally just Unisom and vitamin B6 in one pill. They don't sell it in the US because it was recalled during a birth defect scare in the 80's, but it has been extensively tested in Canada and found to be perfectly safe. It's been argued that the reason it hasn't been brought back in the US is because drug companies make a lot more money off of Zofran than an over the counter sleep drug and a vitamin. My doctor actually suggested it to me, though, to try before going to the "harder" stuff.

Anyway, I took one Unisom and one B6 every night before bed and it totally got rid of the nausea!

It's called Diclectin, and there are a few other active ingredients in it, according to the pharmacist who helped me.

I was on it for both pregnancies, and it did absolutely nothing. If you don't vomit, which I don't, then it really doesn't work.

Best of luck, Tiger

Hmmm... it worked for me every time. I'd take it and 45 minutes later I'd feel fine. It just shows that what works for one person doesn't work for another! :thumbsup2

Been there, OP - I feel for you. But, it will pass. Hopefully, you'll find a few foods that will work for you - but try to keep away from a totally empty stomach. That made me so cranky and nauseated.

Also, I had the "gagging while toothbrushing" thing my entire pregnancy(ies). Finally, the BEST advice I got here? Brush them while you're in the shower! Sounds strange and stupid, but really worked for me...

Good luck!

I gagged on toothpaste too. I found if I didn't bend over the sink I was ok so I stood up as much as possible.
