This letter describes how we lose the Magic at Walt Disney World and how the great cast members at the Grand Floridian rescued it.

Our Disney History…

You could call us a Disney World Family. Every year since the early 70s, my family has made what we would call the Disney Pilgrimage or a trip to “Moms Second Home”. Some years we visited the land of magic several times. At the beginning, we would visit the Parks by staying off-site. Most of our trips would happen by Mom saying, “I want to go to Disney Norm”. It didn’t matter where we were vacationing, my father would re-map our trip to allow at least a one-day visit to the Magic Kingdom. As a family, the only way to travel was by a road trip of 12 to 20 hours long. Later on my family would start to stay on-site. We have stayed at almost every resort at Walt Disney World. My father loves the Fort Wilderness Camp grounds. So guess where I got to stay; a lot!

The Plan…

Around January of this year I called the CRO and started to plan what I believed to be my Mothers day gift to my Mom. Nine months before, my Mom had been diagnosed to have a life ending condition. The Doctors told my Father that there was not much they could do. The plan was to give my parents the trip of their lives. I booked the Gold plan for five nights at the Grand Floridian. My parents would have never stayed at this resort. They were so budget conscious, they believed I was spending too much money on this trip. I told my parents not to worry about the money because they had given the best they could to me as a kid; this was my chance to give something back to them. I could only afford a garden view room and by utilizing the Gold Plan to cover all of our dining and tickets, we could play at the parks without worrying about money. Between Feb and May, I would stop by the Disney Store every two weeks and purchase a hundred Disney Dollars to pay for any shopping while at Walt Disney World.

The Journey to the Land Mickey Built…

Our plans had changed some many times that I thought the CRO cast members were going to hurt me. But I have to say that the CRO was one of the best parts of planning this trip. At the last minute, I changed our travel plans from a 20-hour road trip, to a train trip on Amtrak. My mom went nuts. She had never a ridden train except for the train that encircles the Magic Kingdom. The train trip was long but a lot of fun. We arrived in Orlando Sunday May 4 at about 12 noon. A Mears Town car picked us up. Since we arrived a day early, I booked a one-night stay at the All-Star Sports Resort. The room was ready, and we dropped our bags at the room. My mom enjoyed the layout and design of this resort. While everyone got ready to go out for the afternoon, I went to the gift shop to buy a Pal Mickey. When I got back to the room, I showed the Mickey to my mom. The first thing it said when she pressed his right hand was “I’m so glad to be your pal.” It brought a smile to everyone’s face. Since we had planned to do all of our shopping on Sunday, we headed out to Downtown Disney. We spent all day shopping and eating. It was a blast. I started my pin collection by getting a picture pin with all four of us in the picture. The cast member was so great in getting this completed. I will prize this pin for the rest of my life. My mom didn’t want to get her picture taken. But after a little coaching from me, she had no other option. That evening we all had pizza in the café at the resort.

The Grand Floridian

The next day, we had the luggage moved to the Grand Floridian. We took the bus to the TTC and then the monorail to GF. Once we arrived at the resort, we checked into the nicest room we had ever had at Disney. The cast members made us feel at home. The room was ready at 8am that morning. We walked over to the room, just to check it out. As soon as we entered the room, my mom said, “This is my bed.” She wanted to sleep near the balcony. This was a great start to my moms last day in Walt Disney World.

Mom Meets Eeyore

We had a priority seating at the 1900 Park Fare for breakfast. During the breakfast, moms favorite character “Eeyore” came by our table. The last picture I took of my mom was Eeyore giving her a hug. She had a great breakfast that morning. During the day we went to several different parks. We all enjoyed ourselves as we always do. We had dinner that night at Fulton’s Crab House. Our waiter “Chris” treated us so well. He focused on my mom all night long. She said she had never had better evening in her life. After dinner, we all went back to the resort. My mom sat on the balcony talking with my wife for a couple of hours. My wife said that my mom seemed to be happy again for the first time in several months. We all went to bed that night very happy.

Mom hurts no more…

Tuesday morning sometime before 6 am, Mom woke everyone up. She knew she was dying. I can’t tell you why I believe this I just know it. I’m not going to get into the details, just to say that when the Medic’s arrived, she was not responding at all. The first cast member on the scene was Joe (Guest Show Manager). Joe arrived at our room before the Medics. He helped consol my dad and I wail waiting for the Medics to transport my mom to the hospital. Before leaving for the hospital, I asked Joe to secure the room and to remove my mom’s wheelchair from the room and to have the room cleaned before we arrived back from the hospital. Joe arranged for my family to be driven by Chris to the hospital. Chris was a blessing to my family for the first hours of our tragedy. Chris did everything he could to comfort us. At the hospital, I was informed that my mom had pasted away. Once we were ready to leave the hospital, Chris came back to pick us up.

Magic Rescued

Upon returning to the resort, cast members took us to a different room. They moved us to the Saga Cay Suite B. Ellen the Guest Services Manager gave me a call as soon as we arrived at the room. She gave us her condolences and arranged for breakfast to be delivered to the room. After about an hour, I meet with Ellen in person. Ellen and the cast members that work with her worked to make is so that we did not have to worrying about anything accept our family. She arranged for someone to pickup family members at the airport. The Disney cast members made my guests feel at home. In the morning Ellen made sure that my family got back to the airport. My wife and I attempted to rearrange our Amtrak trip to go back early but they were booked up. We decided to stay the rest of the week as planned. Ellen arranged it so that we did not have to checkout and go to the All-Star Friday morning as planned. She also arranged it so that we could have a late checkout on Saturday afternoon.

Our Last Night

One of your cast members at EPCOT arranged for my wife and I to have special seating for the fireworks Friday night because my wife is visual impaired. When we arrived at the English Pub, all the seats were taken for the evening. The Hostess “Lori” told us too hold on, she was going to look one more time. She came with a big smile on her face. The “Best” seat in the house just opened up. I have never been in a better seat to view the fireworks in all my years of coming to EPCOT. We found out later that a couple was seating at the table and just had a feeling someone else should get a chance to see the fireworks as they had seen them before. My mom would have loved the view.

One Last Shinning Moment…

As my wife and I were departing on Saturday afternoon, Ellen and a couple of managers came in before their shift to see us off. I truly believe that Ellen and her team went out of their way in assisting my family.

I have written this letter in the hopes that the correct people at Disney will get a chance to personally read it. I have listed several cast members below. They “Rescued” my magic. Most people will not understand how I can enjoy a place where my mom died, but I know my mom will be a part of Disney forever.

Happy Mothers Day mom. I have your Pal Mickey and will take good care of it. Love you and miss you.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom passing away at the Grand Floridian! She certainly sounded like a wonderful person!

If you want WDW to recongnize the CM's that helped you, send a message directly to WDW. I will try to locate the address for you. They really do recognize the CM's if they recieve a letter so it will be worth it! It stays in their permanant record and all CM's that recieve praise are put in a drawing for free stays at resorts plus tickets.

Sad but happy story too. And thank you for sharing. Your mom got to go to her second "home" and enjoy before she passed on (it sounds like it was relatively peaceful -- I hope it was). And it was heartwarming to hear how the CMs at WDW treated your situation -- with the respect, dignity and love that everyone deserves.

Thanks for sharing this very special trip with us. Bless you and your family.

Poohpal:

I am soooo sorry to hear of your loss. I am reading this at work and almost lost it.
It sounds as if she had a choice of where she wanted her last moment to be and who she wanted them to be with, her wish was certainly granted.........

My thoughts are with you and your family....

What a beautiful story. I am sitting here at work with tears rolling down my face. It sounds like your mother enjoyed her last days - what a memory for all of you. May God Bless you & your family, and those special cast members that took such good care of you.

Thank you for sharing this very personal story about your Mom's passing.

She really enjoyed her last days with such a wonderful, caring family in such a beautiful place.

Take care & best wishes,

My condolences on your loss. I am so glad your mother had such a wonderful time at WDW. You've been blessed with great memories.
Thanks for sharing such a touching story.

Poohpaul....while I have lurked here for a long time, your post prompted me to register and put in my very first post

first, i am very sorry for your recent loss - I feel like I can understand where you are in life as my mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness in Feb......while she has visited WDW quite a few times, she had never stayed on-site at a Disney resort....as a "make-a-wish" for her, 2 weeks ago, we took her to WDW and stayed at the Wilderness Lodge for 3 nites - though our park touring was quite constrained due to her illness, it was still priceless to see some of her reactions like entering the WL main lobby for the first time or seeing some of the Disney "magic" in the Share a Dream parade or the Lion King show at AK!

i know bleak days are ahead for my family, but I will always treasure that final visit to WDW with my Mom....and while the circumstances were much more extreme for you, I know by reading what you wrote and how you wrote it, that you too will treasure those final memories with your mom

Gos bless and take care - Joeker

I think that is one of the sweetest stories I have ever read. I am so glad your mom's final moments where at a place she loved with her loved ones.
Thank you for sharing!

I am soo sorry for your loss. Please know that you are in my prayers.

How wonderful for you to know that you helped to make your mom's last moments truely happy. I hope that will bring you comfort in the times ahead.

I have tears running down my face and the biggest lump in my throat. What a sad, but amazing story. Knowing this is probably a very difficult time of year to lose your Mom, you should be at peace with yourself knowing that you allowed her to have some of her best days in the end. God bless you and your family, I wish you the best.

Your love for your Mom shines through all the sadness. I'm sorry for your loss. You and your family will be in my prayers.

I'm so sorry you lost your mother. I lost mine to Cancer 13 years ago at the age of 49. Way too young. You are truly lucky to have had such wonderful memories of her last days. I'm sure she wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

My thoughts and prayers are with you & your family.

My sympathy to you and your family. How wonderful that so many people stepped up to help you at such a difficult time. I love the details you gave about your mom's last day - I know you will always cherish those photos.

Thank you for sharing.

Audrey

My condolences to you and your family. We are a
Disney family, too. We were at the Poly when WDW first opened and have made numerous trips since then. When my brother passed away we bought a commemorative stone in the walk around Disney and it was placed near the beach at the Poly. We are having a special family reunion in June there with my parents who are 84 and 83. My mom is in poor health and every summer when we get together I wonder if this visit will be our last. Knowing how fragile life is makes us treasure the magical moments even more. I hope the happiness you brought your mom in her last days will bolster you in your darkest moments of grief. God's blessings on you all.

What a wonderful testimony of the devotion you and your mother held for each other. She must have had a joyous heart and a love of life- and the realization that life needs the free-spirited fun of those Disney visits while you were growing up. She passed on a lot of heart in you and so many will be blessed for it.

Thanks for sharing a heartfelt tribute to the folks at Disney who helped you through this difficult time- and God bless your mother and your father.

Tara

Your Mother was lucky to have such a loving and supportive family. It is stories like yours that help make me a better person. Sandie

Thanks for sharing that lovely story with us. I'm so happy she enjoyed her last days at the place she loved with the people she loved. I do know how your heart is hurting right now as I lost my mother on just this past May 3rd as well.....Mother's Day was very painful for me too. She had cancer and died fairly young at 64. Thanks to Hospice and lots of morphine, I was holding her hand when she died at home as she wished.

She never quite understood my love of Disney as she prefered to stay at home and tend to her huge garden in the spring & summer and quilt in the winter. I'll always think of her when we visit Disney though, because I bought into Disney Vacation Club with the gift she left me. And you can bet, as I'm taking my granddaughter and the grandchild due in November on future trips to Disney, I'll be remembering Mom and telling my grandchildren that it's due to her generosity that I'm able to take them to so often.

Again, thanks for sharing with us.

Like so many of the other readers I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face. What a beautiful way for her life to end surrounded by her family in a place she loved. It sounds like you will never lack for wonderful memories. God bless you.
