Just thought that I would give a quick update/mini report here on my Mom's first trip to the world.
She received this trip as a Christmas present from my brother and I. My mom is 65 yrs old, legally blind, widowed and had always wanted to go to Disney. My Dad wouldn't fly and the one year that they had planned to drive down and meet us there was screwed because of 9/11.
Her and I left Nova Scotia Jan 8 for Orlando. SHE LOVED IT!!!! I don't know where to start....
We had a car so we did a trip to Clearwater Beach and Tampa.....oh boy did she love the shopping. Everything was alot slower as she is still fairly new with the white cane. We spent some time at International Plaza in Tampa. It is a great mall with somewhat higher end stores. The irony here is that with teenagers of my own, neices, nephews etc, Abercrombie and Hollister were must do visits and those stores in Orlando don't have much in the way of sales because of location. Well the Tampa locations had mega sales and that would have been worth the drive.
Our first park was Magic Kingdom and with her GAP, white cane and first visit button, it seemed like the park was all ours. Every CM went out of their way to make her feel special and welcome. Actually she made a point of telling me that I had never mentioned how nice the people in Florida were. You know, she was right. From Tampa to Orlando to Wal Mart to the outlets, everyone was very pleasant. We managed two character meals, one at Liberty Tree and one at Chef Mickeys. Actually she got it in her head that she was gonna step foot in every park before she left Orlando - and she did.
I know that I am all over the place with this report, probably from trying to keep it short and that I am still tired. I did get a few pm's from people anxious to hear how someone in her situation made out.....so
She did awesome. Yes the pace was slower, but she went on the tea cups, Jungle Cruise, Stitch, It's A Small World. She would have liked to have gone on Pirates, but it was having problems. She did manage to walk the whole park except for Toon Town.
In a nutshell, her highlights were Beauty and the Beast and Lion King. She is a night person and I am morning. She was so comfortable that she would suggest that I go do something early and come back for her. She says now that had she known earlier, she would have been walking to get in better shape - I thought that she did great.
If anyone has any other questions, comments, feel free.
I am going to try a trip report by the end of the week.
