Mom said I had to go! The "Melting in May with Mom" Report! Updated 11/9 - EPCOT!!

With only a few weeks to plan, this Disney planner felt a bit overwhelmed. Then again, it was just Mom and I...a lot less to worry about then when I travel with my whole family and plan out each park day. The first question - where are we going to stay? Well, the conference was being held at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando

and although it is indeed a VERY nice resort, my Mom really wanted to stay on Disney property. (That statemtent actually cracks me up because the first time she stayed on property was when they joined us in February at the Poly. Guess you could say she was sold after that one trip! She and my step-dad booked a return trip for the two of them for the end of April using the bounceback offer. They were scheduled to return to the Poly and were going all out with Club Level - Theme Park View.)

When I first started thinking about this trip, I was actually ok with doing a split stay (Gasp, I know!) and staying at the Gaylord during the days of the conference and then moving over to Disney property since I thought being onsite would make it hard to leave our Disney “bubble” every day to go to class. However, we agreed that changing resorts mid-stay wasn't what we wanted to do either. Plus, Mom is a big fan of not dealing with luggage now that she has had such good experiences on Magical Express. She didn't want to give that up either.

Onsite it was. :thumbsup2 So, now we had to decide on which resort. :confused3

Of course, we thought of the Poly right off the bat, :cloud9: but also considered Beach Club, Boardwalk, and Animal Kingdom Lodge. I started pulling the rates up using the 30% off code (I think that's what it was anyway...) and had room rates that weren't too bad. We totally justified the higher expense of staying deluxe due to the fact that if it had been ANYBODY ELSE in the company to go on the trip, they would have had to have 2 rooms but since it was just mother and daughter, we could share a room, therefore saving money!! Disney math at it's finest! :teacher:

Then it dawned on me that Mom would be going down at the end of the month (April) for their 4 day stay, plus this trip, and maybe she should take her first ticket that she bought with the package, and upgrade that baby to an AP, therefore, obtaining us the ability to use the AP rate for our room - which was 45% off! Woo-hoo! :woohoo: Again, I think I'm becoming quite good at Disney math! :teacher:

It was a definite win-win for her too, because she was going to have to buy a second MYW ticket for our trip anyway, and she would have spent more on the two tickets combined - a 4 day ticket + a 7 day hopper would have been around $540 total, as opposed to the $520 AP! Cha-Ching!! :thumbsup2 She had already paid for her 4 day ticket, so all she had to do was pay the difference when she went down in April.

Now we were eligible for the awesome 45% AP discount!! Plus now she has a reason to go back this year! :woohoo:

So back to the resort choice. We knew how we felt about the Poly, :cloud9:, so we started pulling up the pictures of the other resorts and comparing everything. We finally ruled out AKL due to location (but we definitely wanted to visit over there). Then we called to see what the availability was for the other 3 resorts. Using our AP code, the only room category available at the Beach Club was Club Level so we ruled that one out. Now we were between Boardwalk and Poly. We just couldn't bring ourselves to not stay at the Poly, so that is where we eventually decided to book! Creatures of habit, I guess.

Mom thought that since the price difference was only like $55 more a night to go for lagoon view, that we should go for it! I've said it before, she is my Mom AND my boss, so it would be very disrespectful for me to argue!! :rotfl2:

Lagoon view it was!

So fast forward a couple weeks to the end of April and Mom left on her trip with my step-dad to stay at the Poly – Club Level – Theme Park View. :yay: They had a fabulous time! Ate at Artist Point, Citricos, Plaza, Rose & Crown (I planned their park days and ADRs). They did the Behind The Seeds Tour and saw Cirque du Soleil. They had a blast and adored club level and their 3rd floor, TPV, room so much that when she returned she asked me to call and see if they had any availability for US to stay club level. :worship:

Unfortunatley, they did not. :sad1:

I would have to suffer with just plain old lagoon view! :lmao:

And again, for picture sake, here are some pictures of the Poly that my DH took last year when we stayed there for the first time. LOVE the Poly!!

Ok, just updated my other report, so I'm hoping I can get another update done on this one.....who needs a clean house anyway, right??

So we were all set with where we were going to stay, we were registered for our...ahem...business part of the trip...i.e. the conference and our individual classes, and now we needed airfare! Since we were leaving for Florida on a Saturday, I thought the earlier the flight, the better. We have only ever done ME on a weekday and I was figuring that Saturday would probably be a lot more crowded. We had our choice between a 7 AM Southwest flight or a 10:00 Airtran flight.

Well...duh....3 hours earlier!! I'm taking that Southwest flight!! :cool1::cool1: We booked it and then about a week later, the price dropped another $25! I love how you can get a credit back on your flight if your fare price drops before you leave! Yay Southwest! :woohoo:

I figured that by doing this, we would have almost a full day to spend in a park before the conference started on Sunday. :thumbsup2

So the night of the 14th came and I had everything I could possibly think of taken care of for Shawn to handle with the kids while I was gone. I felt very organized with the kids stuff but completely unprepared with my own.

Leaving for a week when you have 3 grade-school age kids that are towards the end of the school year means lots of work for a semi-control-freak Mom to get it all covered and explained before leaving. The kids had dance classes, soccer games, a talent show at church, field trips at school, projects for school, along with the normal routine of school work and homework that Shawn doesn't normally handle. I got a nice little spreadsheet prepared for him to follow for the week and got the "back-up" people all lined up for reinforcements while I was gone.

Around 11:00 that night, I started packing for my own stuff.

As is usual before a trip, I couldn't sleep. I finally laid down around 1:00 but still don't think I dozed off until 1:30, so that 3:45 AM alarm came pretty quick. I began to doubt that decision to take the 7 AM flight! Mom got there right around 5:00 and I had to chuckle at the fact that she was wearing jeans and a long sleeve white button down shirt. She knew we would be going to a park and I figured she knew that our bags would not be in our room (if our room was even ready that early), so I'm not sure what she was thinking. I had my Croc flip-flops, capris, and tshirt on so I knew I would be comfortable scooting over to a park right away!

Anyway, we made the 20 minute trip to the airport where we checked our bags (bags fly free with Southwest...woohoo) and headed to Starbucks! Our flight started boarding around 6:45 and took off right on time.

I proceeded to spend the next hour and 45 minutes praying, reading a magazine, and attempting a crossword puzzle. I really hate to fly, but this flight was thankfully fairly uneventful, and we touched down in MCO right around 9 AM!! First stop...bathrooms...second stop....Starbucks (yes, Mom and I are big coffee drinkers). Then we walked the country mile to Magical Express! We zoomed on through and straight to the front of the line for the Poly, WL, GF, and Contemporary! They saw us walk up to the rope and came over and opened the rope for us to go on through straight to a bus! Woo-hoo! Zero wait! And we got to ride on a Disney Cruise Line bus! How cute! We were moving along so fast I didn't even have time to take a picture of it!!

A few more minutes and we were ready to set sail on our Disney Cruise! LOL! Well, we were going to cruise down the highway at least! The driver told us the Poly would be first, then GF, Contemporary, and then WL. Woo-hoo!! We are making great time and would be at the Poly in no time!!

We sat back and watched the movie and before long we were passing under this sign.
P5140020.jpg

(I'm not sure of our actual time passing under this because my camera must have been all messed up - it is reading that this picture was taken on May 14th, not 15th, and at 8:40 at night....WTH??)

Anyways, we passed through the Magic Kingdom gates at 10:02 - that I know, since I took this picture with my cell phone:
IMG01215-20100515-1002.jpg

Phew - the crowds looked thick for heading into the park at 10 AM - don't these people know about rope drop?? LOL! :rotfl2:

In just a few minutes we would be arriving at the Poly!!!

Oh wait...why are we passing the turn to the Poly??? Why are their cones set up everywhere??? Um, hello? Disney bus driver...please explain....

Come to find out, there was an Ironman competition going on that weekend and they had a whole bunch of roads closed off to the buses. I'm not sure if the road closure heading to the Poly was due to this or not (because it continued for many days) but the traffic getting into the TTC and the MK resorts was chaos! :upsidedow

Due to this nice little change in course, we went from being the first bus stop to being the last. :sad1: First they dropped off WL, then CR, and then we rode all the way around the back side of the Magic Kingdom and came up around the other side and dropped off at the Grand Floridian. Finally, we arrived at the Poly a full 45 minutes after passing through the Magic Kingdom sign! Oh well.

We were here! Now on to the check in to get our room assignment and head off to the Animal Kingdom!!

ALOHA!!!

Love the spreadsheet idea for Shawn, did he actually use it? :rotfl: You know he went rouge on the TSM thing, so I don't trust him :rotfl2:.

It is great how quickly you made it through ME only to get caught up in the Ironman stuff :headache:.

I can't believe you stopped there :sad2:. I am dying, too many more days until we are at the Poly, I NEED your report Sara, I NEED IT  !!!

We love those early SW flights, too. We're at the resort and sitting by the pool or heading to a park by lunchtime. :thumbsup2

Getting sleep before an early a.m. flight is so hard. You are too keyed up to relax, as much as you want and need sleep.

Yay for zooming right onto a Magical Express bus. :woohoo:

Look forward to AK pictures and seeing where your room was.
