Mom may need wheelchair

I am treating my mom and dad to an overnight at MK later this month. My mom is overweight, which is not the problem, but she is having trouble with her knees ( fell and did ligament damage). Since she is young (62), she feels funny getting a chair, but we are only there for one day and will probably go at it commando style. Can you rent the chairs at the gate? Are the chairs or motorized ones better? Prices? Any information on this would really help me. Thanks

As you will only be there for two days, I would suggest renting an ECV from Disney. The cost is $30 per day, plus a refundable $10 deposit.

The reason for an ECV rather than a wheelchair is several. First there are hills which are not noticeable when walking but definitely when in a chair. Second, if not used to using or pushing a chair it can get VERY tiring. Third it will give your mother more of a sense of freedom and not being a "burden" on others.

If you have a state-issued handicap hang tag you will be able to park in the handicap area. If not, tell the parking attendant there is a physical problem and you will be allowed to park in a "reserved" space very close to the trams. If you are able to park in a handicap area there are usually "loaner" wheelchairs available which can be used as far as the gate.

She might want to practice in an ECV at a large grocery store. Note the controls will be different, and the ones in the stores are much larger and more difficult to maneuver (primarily due to the large basket in the front).
