My sister is currently staying at OKW and it's been a mess! Second room switch they're making. First was due to a noise issue, but the 2nd is because there is mold in their room.

My BIL is down at the front desk right now.

OKW was built on a swamp, heavy vegetation, next to water. The rooms if not occupied nightly they tend to grow mold or get musty pretty fast. Running the AC removes the extra moisture from the air but if the room sits empty bad things happen.

That doesn't sound good! We're staying there for the 1st time in mid April for one night since we had to move our trip forward for better airfare & flight times. I see that the Poly is opening April 1st. Maybe we'll get lucky & get a night there instead but can't book till Feb 25 so I doubt it. Points will be higher too. I guess for one night we'll stick with OKW. The rest of our stay is BCV & hoping for a remodeled room.

Iam at OKW now and I was surprised how strong mould smell was in the room when I entered. Living in it for a few days removed it, but I had no idea it was a common problem, never heard of it before.

i would hope mousekeeping is given instructions about setting the thermostat when they leave to avoid/minimize this.

Unknown, twice we had smelly rooms and both times when they moved us that said that it happens when the rooms go unoccupied for a day or two.

Most of the WDW HVAC systems shut down if people are not in the room or if the balcony door is opened.

And that's the problem. OKW was designed to have traditional thermostats that ran all the time. Then Disney switched them to the more "green" motion sensing ones.

Update- The manager apologized and they were moved to a new room and given a room charge credit, plus 3 fast passes. They didn't ask for any of it (just the room change), the manager called and let them know they'd be receiving the compensation later that afternoon. Maybe it was after inspection of the room and verification of mold problem, not sure.
