I also need a grad school that accepts students for spring semester, because I plan to graduate a semester early. This leaves me with very few options. I think there are 4 schools between New York and Florida that accept students in spring.

Technically, you don't NEED a grad program that starts in the spring. You could 1) pick up a 2nd major and take that extra semester, 2) work for that semester to earn money before starting your grad program, 3) spend that time interning with a professional that does the sort of work you're hoping to do after grad school so you get a real flavor for what it's like over and above the educational clinic, 4) some combination of any of them.

I wouldn't limit your grad school choices based on the calendar. The right grad school can get you connected employment wise in addition to giving you the knowledge you need to succeed.

All we have been hearing lately is that government spending needs to be reduced. Now comes the hard part - where to cut. No one wants anything they use cut.

I understand you are upset however college is a business and decisions have to be made without an emotional attachment. Your program evidently cost more to run than it generated in either tuition, reputation, grants, or publicity.

If there were the costs to run a clinic associated with the major I'm sure that had a big part in the decision, what with rising costs and liability for something like that.

The state has a habit of pillaging the SUNY coffers every time it needs money.
I'm not sure what you are referring to, in terms of the past, but that's not what's happening this time. The state is simply reducing the allocation of state revenues toward the SUNY system. They are taking no money or other assets away from SUNY, and requiring no extraordinary financial payments from SUNY back to the state.

We just received an e-mail from our department chair explaining the events of the last few days. Apparently a large part of why our program was cut is because it is a professional program, which detracts from the college's "liberal arts" distinction. She said that she remains uncertain as to what her future is at Geneseo.

I did not ask for people to post about why this is necessary, what else we need to do (though I do appreciate that), or how this is happening everywhere else (which I am aware of). I simply asked for people to sign a petition to help reverse the decision to cut an extremely worthwhile program when so few programs exist as it is. Please, no more negative comments. Put yourself in the shoes of all the students and faculty who have just had the rug ripped out from under them. If you were to come here, saying that you lost your job due to budget cuts, would you want me to say "Oh, well it's a necessary evil, and it's happening everywhere." ? No, probably not. We are simply trying to fight for our right to receive an education.

... We are simply trying to fight for our right to receive an education.

Okay, I supported you until this post. Really? Your RIGHT to have a college education in the major of your choice at a tax subsizided school?

You know better. :rolleyes1

That's funny. We are supposed to be the university center for the humanities and social sciences. Yet all the departments that are being cut are in the humanities, and none of the professional programs have been cut. Your department chair probably has no idea of what the real reasons are for the cut.

I completely disagree with characterizing state universities as businesses. They aren't the same, nor should they be.

Actually, here is the direct quote from her e-mail:
"President Dahl and Julie Rao came in and informed us our program was cut.
The President read from a prepared, written statement on a white line
tablet, but did answer some questions and specifically said it was because
our program was not central to the mission of the college. The college is
a liberal arts college and we are a professional program. When asked by
Mrs. Deats about the School of Education and School of Business we were
told they were much closer to the mission but might get some cuts."

Good point, and in a broader sense, this isn't a blog; it's a discussion forum. The voicing of all sides of the issue is appropriate. I referred, earlier, to the situation at SUNY Stony Brook, because it was brought to my attention back in April due to my previous association with that university. I was asked to support opposition to PHEEIA. Before I support something I dig deeper than just taking the word of others - in my case, former work colleagues. I did that research and raised, then, the same issue I raised earlier in this thread: The lack of a clearly superior alternative that factors in the perspectives of myriad different stakeholders. We can be sympathetic with the plight of those adversely impacted by these budget cuts - and we are sympathetic - but that doesn't necessarily mean that we must support harming other aspects, which is the inevitable result of reallocating resources from those aspects - again, in my case, to SUNY Stony Brook.

Why should the mods close your thread? :confused3

Because it isn't going the way you wanted it to?

In going down the list of thread topics, I seriously doubted if I even would have clicked on this one had I not seen the "mods please close"...

I was just thinking this too. I clicked because I wanted to see the train wreck in action, and got this thread.

Also, it shows why the "first reply should quote all of OP" is a good rule.

OP, don't feel angry or embarrassed about this thread. It's ok if the mods don't close it, really. Just take the replies as an :"oh well" and try to be ok with that. You're probably angry and upset over your major being closed but be strong and look for another solution instead of a petition. A petition won't work. Move on, there's a better solution out there for you even if you have to go through hell and high water. Good luck in achieving your goal and don't give up!

:confused3 Since all of us live all over the USA-why would OUR siggy's matter?

Heck, some of us don't even live in the US at all.

Nor are some of us stupid enough to sign a petition just because an OP asked us to do so. We are going to ask questions. Questions prompt discussion. Frankly if the OP does not have responses for the questions asked here (i.e. what other solution do you propose), I cannot take her or her petition seriously.
