I’ve seen several posts about modifying but through reading didn’t find the exact answer I’m looking for so sorry for another modification question...

Traveling with my in laws. We are 99.9% sure of dates. I’m booking at a 7 month window. If I book outside my home resort and need to shift my dates (ex: right now we are looking to book from 6-12 of the month but my mil may need me to change to the 8-15) is there a penalty as it’s not my home resort? I know you have to wait for 7 months out to the day and I could book today with my original dates but if I need to change do I have to cancel the reservation and start again and risk losing the room or is it as simple as shifting the dates through online modification assuming the room is available? Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

There is no penalty for modifying a reservation at a non-home resort. It may end up costing more points because it includes additional weekend nights or the new reservation crosses into a more expensive season. But there is no cash penalty.

If you need to modify a reservation at a non-home resort, you have to be within 7 months of the start date for your new stay. No need to cancel the existing reservation. Just modify it to include the new dates. The original reservation is not forfeited until the new reservation is confirmed.
