modifying reservations question

Sorry if this has been covered but I couldn't find it in search.
I have a reservation for 7 nights, Mon-Mon (made at 7 months). I prefer Sun-Sun but the check-in Sunday is not available, so I'm going to keep looking to see if it opens up. All other days are still available so far.
My question is, if I suddenly see the night I want and try to modify the reservation online, if the night suddenly becomes unavailable, will I loose my original reservation?
I don't want to snag the one night as a reservation by itself and then ask MS to combine because I don't want to borrow more points.
I've never wait listed but I don't know if it is appropriate in this situation.
Thanks!

The modify process will not cancel your original reservation until you confirm the final changes - and that won't happen unless all the nights on the new reservation are available.

Since you currently have a 7 night reservation, and you're looking to modify/change that to another 7 night reservation, the idea of putting in a waitlist request is a good one. You can continue to stalk the site to see if your Sunday arrival date opens up, but there's a chance a waitlist could come through for you when you're not looking! The waitlist really would have no downside. If you do manage to modify the reservation on your own, you can just cancel the waitlist at that time. Good luck - hope your days come open!

Thank you!

I'd like to modify online our reservation from 9 nites to only 7, departing earlier than we booked originally. Res is for a very popular time. The last time i tried this (years ago) I lost the res with nothing available to rebook.
Are there instructions somewhere so I don't risk that again? Thx.

I've found the modify process to be pretty straightforward - you bring up the res, verify the new dates are available, allocate the points, and confirm. But if you've had a bad experience and don't feel comfortable, perhaps make the call to Member Services and let them handle it for you. Cutting 2 nights off the end of your reservation shouldn't be a problem.

Thx. But that's my quesion: There are NO rooms available now for that week.
Does the online app look at THAT before allowing me to keep res, but with fewer nites or does it consider my request a NEW res but now no rooms are available?

I'm try to avoid calling MS. Last 2 calls a few weeks ago were handled rudely & ended up with inaccurate point allocations.
I was really shocked. One even berated me for calling 20 min before closing with "a complicated question I knew would go over her quitting time."

Let me make sure I'm understanding your situation correctly. You want your check in date to remain the same but just stay 7 nights instead of 9?

How did you modify your reservation last time when you lost the room? I fear you may have done it incorrectly. You should never cancel a room.

View your current 9 night reservation and click modify. Search for the same room type. It will show as available. Then you can just continue with the 7 nights as desired.
