Wow, I do agree with this....what puzzles me most about this conversation is, if you're in danger of losing life, limb, and property, what on earth are you doing browsing around a vacation-oriented board??????

While some may have stayed on as long as they could and taken comfort in talking others like myself did consult the board because i was evacuating to disney!! That is our evacuation plan because we live on an island and orlando is where we are told to evac to. We happen to be passholders so disney is always our logical choice..I found these boards to be an immense help last year since orlando which is consider the "safe zone" was hit the first time SO when we were TOLD the 2nd hurricane to evacuate I was reluctant as was many inour area to head to Orlando since it had been hit pretty hard the first time so to read someones account of what happend at disney had us prepared (you see we always thought w e woould just go to disney and relax while i house was destroyed but charley showed that O town was also vulnerable) becasue of a few nice poster i new that disney would provide a bag meal or something if power went out and that flashlights would be provided and to expect to be in the room for a long period at a time... While i was scared to death to be going going to orlando which basically had a big bullseye on it for me i had little choice as we are in a mandatory evac area so I am very thankful for all the posters who gave there account and when we had to evac a 2nd time and we could not get the Wl which i consider a very solid structure and had to settle for PORS i was even more thankful to read others who had weathered teh storm there the precious times.....

All of you have completely missed the whole point of my original post (well, not all of you). My point is that last year the Resorts board was FULL of thread after thread after thread of hurricanes this and hurricanes that-much like when codes are being awaited or when threads about how to get CRT dominated the restaurant board. I am not on the internet when there is a hurricane outside. I am talking about going through ALL of hurricane season having to read about NOTHNG BUT on the resorts board. That's it. I guess it's up to the mods now, as it should be.

Okay--for next time--WL leaks alot--in the commons areas....and we were banned from the lobby at one point b/c they thought the window were going to go b/c they were leaking badly and the wind was horrible. :rolleyes1 Does that make you feel better? ;) (sorry--bad tease---we are in Indialantic, so as a fellow evacuee--feel free to smack me :teeth: )

But it was priceless that we came out of the elevator on our floor and our dd4 had her own private moment with Minnie and Mickey. ::MinnieMo ::MickeyMo :wizard:

Sorry Susy

When I referred to you in my post I was just assuming (bad, bad, bad) what you might be feeling during a storm. I do remember your OP and I still think a weather sticky or sub board would be a great idea. I wasn't on the DIS last year during hurricane season, but I imagine hurricane talk did dominate the boards.

You are right its up to the mods, as it should be.

OK--have it your way.

Noone is saying noone doesn't have the right to discuss anything re: the weather. The Floridians who have suggested a separate board are some of the same Floridians who have helped others with information when their TA's wouldn't lift a finger until a "formal announcement is made". When they announce that all barrier islands must evacuate---that includes the port....and regardless of the wishful thinking of the travel industry---when they say all ships out--it includes DCL. When they formally announce locally that the aiport will close at a certain time--doesn't matter what anybody is wishfully thinking. I know I've helped provide valuable information so that fellow disers can make quick decisions ahead of the rush.

The benefits of being on the DISboards. Our house might be blown away--but we are always willing to lend a helping hand for your vacation planning when it is being interrupted by a hurricane.

So perhaps--instead of thinking how us Floridians need to get on with it and remember that this is a place for vacation family planning and fun and "threads happen"---don't forget the flip side--that for the 2004 hurricane season--we've been able to help our fellow disers get the inside scoop so that they can make appropriate preparations and/or modifications to their travel plans. It is a two way street.

Not saying that us "out-of towners" know best...can't lump us all under the same umbrella that way. But thanks for the bowing and groveling, anyway. ;)
Not saying that some of the Florida DISers weren't godsends with their advice to fellow vacationers...that goes without saying. Lots of wonderful people in the world.
But definitely saying that to put a separate weather forum on the boards would give the mods more work, and most certainly won't stop others from discussing the weather, no matter how much it upsets folks made sensitive from having to live through hurricane after hurricane.
Sorry, LisalovesPooh, if you see all this discussion as a personal affront to your state and your altruism, wasn't meant to be.

What I would like to say is that when you are living in an area that is about to be hit by a hurricane, that is all you can think about.

agreed... and when you're vacationing in an area that could possibly be hit by a hurricane, that may not be "all" you can think about, but it can be consuming...

i don't understand why some (floridian?) posters think it's wrong for some other (non-floridian?) to be concerned about hurricanes intruding on their vacation... yes, those in hurricane zones are definitely in more danger, have more at risk, etc but that does not negate that those that are visiting are entitled to be concerned, as they also have something at risk... even if it's "only" a vacation!

I don't any of us Floridians said that. But there were some posts last year from vacationers that were very insensitive. There were many of us from FL that posted to give the latest up to date informtion even though we had sustained damage and life wasn't back to normal.

this is where i got the impression as i posted in a previous post:

Susy: "I am worrying about my roof blowign off and windows blowing in and people want to know if the food court will be open."

for someone staying in a resort (whether vacationer or evacuee) this is a valid concern, no?

safetymom: "It does bother some of us when others are more concerned about if the grocery stores are open, can they get water, will they let us leave the room, instead of being worried about the thousands of people in harms way"

how do you know that concern for safety of fellow man is not foremost in their mind along w/concern for how they are going to persevere thru the storm? i know for me (during frances) i had a two track mind... friends/family/strangers who were in harm's way as well as how i'm going to keep my kids fed, watered and entertained in a value room for 24+ hours! why is that wrong?!

ziggie: "In my opinion, life goes something like this ~ we concern ourselves with those things that most directly affect us. It's not that we are insensitive to the plight of others, but we, by nature, are worried by what affects us"

AMEN ZIGGIE!

a mickeyfan: "While those of you that have vacation plans that may be ruined by a hurricane, our home & lives can be <snip> I don't want to read a bunch of whiny guests upset with Disney because the parks were closed, or all they had to eat were brown bag meals because the food courts/resturants weren't open"

i don't think i was ever whiney, but after 3 years of dreaming about our trip, and saving to pay for it, and having planned out each day, making ps' and all kinds of plans, to have that dashed, well, it kinda sucked on a certain level... will ya give me that?

ducklite: "If people are going to head to WDW anyhow, even with storm coming, then they need to be self-sufficient with flashlights, water, and food, and not expect the resort to cater to their every whim"

unless they don't know the storm is coming... or don't understand the severity of a hurricane... or do not have the means to be self-sufficient (i.e. we were there a few days before frances was a threat, had no rental car, and could not have found one if we wanted one!)... who should we expect to take care of our basic needs (food/shelter)? disney buses were not running to walmart (and even if they were and guests snatched up all the flashlights, the residents would be ticked that the visitors bought what they needed)

:flower:

I give up. You refuse to understand how we felt when the hurricanes hit last year. If it should happen again this year I guess we will all bypass the hurricane threads and let the visitors figure it out for themselves. If you are coming to FL during hurricane season it is your responsibility to figure out what you may need to survive just like Floridians do.

Thank you Floridians that took the time last year to help here on the DIS. Apparently we weren't appreciated by those planning their vacations. After all they were spending money, we were just worried about how much damage we may have.

This is my last post. I will be unsubscribing from the thread.

Any one is more than welcome to visit Florida. Just be aware of what you be in for as far as the weather and hurricanes goes.

As I stated several times I have passed your requests along to the webmasters. If I hear anything I will pass along the information.

Good perspective, Gigi.

On that last note--Admittedly--there were people who had NO idea. Sometimes on vacation--we do detach ourselves from the real world and ignore the news. So it is completely understandable to not know. The GOOD news: Now that disney has had 3 real deals with no dress rehearsals--I bet the next time...the hurricane plan will run like CLOCKWORK. Just like those hideous evacuations of 1999 for Floyd where people gave up after sitting on a highway completely stopped for 8 hours---that did not happen for the last two evacs b/c the kinks were worked out. Each storm--something new is learned and utilized later.

I will say--Disney has got to be one of the nicest places to be "stuck". :umbrella: Though a 48 hour hurricane was a tad on the freaky side!

i agree completely... if i have to endure a hurricane (and i do, we have them right here on the east end of long island... high level dangerous ones that destroy property and put lives at risk) disney is the place to do it!
