noticed some moderators left their positions recently on the boards. i was curious, how did they become one and is it volunteer position? If so, it seems like they put so much time and effort in it for years i think it's amazing they did it. is there an upside to it?

There is no pay for being a moderator.

I received an email asking me if I wanted to moderate a specific board

An administrator contacted me as I did not seek the position.
I had no idea who suggested my name.

I find it enjoyable to help others

I've been a mod here years ago, and mod on a couple other non-Disney forums. Usually, based on your performance on a forum a Mod or Admin will recommend a person when there is a need. There is nothing wrong with reaching out to volunteer, but don't expect them to jump and hire you - at least on one forum I'm on we go back and look at posts, comments and interactions and watch for a month or two.

Oh, and none are paid. I do get a gift card (usually) around Christmas from one, beyond that it's about helping people.

I agree with the current and former mods that responded. :)

It's a volunteer job and I think people that do it are basically born with the "I really like to help others" gene. One of the upsides that I receive as a moderator is the many friends I've made through the Disboards that have become more than just digital/ internet friends. Normally, if the team thinks that a board needs a moderator we look for someone that is pretty involved in that particular forum, normally helpful, and brings a positive presence. Webmasters are also volunteers.

Love you MaryJ!

I was a DVC moderator on the old PassPorters boards. It's was a volunteer position, but I did get a free PassPorter guide book whenever a new edition came out.

I met Dave and Jennifer at a MouseAdventure and he gave my friend and me a Passporter book. Such nice people. I had also bought one when we went to WDW back in '99.

If i could recommend someone I would love to see @SorcererHeidi be a moderator. She's a wonderful friendly asset to the community boards.
@disneyworldsk - Thank you for your kind words, I also consider you to be an asset to the boards, I sincerely appreciate the compliment, but, as someone who was a mod on several online services for quite a few years before, I'm not interested in doing that at this point in my life. I'd rather just hang around, enjoying everyone, helping when, and where, I can, as a "spectator". But again - SO touched, you've made my day!
