ok so i read that it doesn't make sense to use points to stay at a mod hotel and that you should pay cash using some kind of dvc discount. I would like to stay at the polynesian at some point because we have never stayed there. It wouldn't be anytime soon, just trying to get an idea of how things work. Anyway, is there some kind of DVC Member discount on oop cash rooms at mod resorts? If so, what is it?

Sorry, no DVC discount on anything but DVC villas - and that is not always available. Since many DVC members are also AP holders, they use the AP discount.

A single night at the Polynesian on points can range from about 40 points per night at the lowest season (Su-Th) to about 160 points per night in the highest season (F/Sa). It takes a lot of points to stay outside of DVC at a Disney resort.

Thanks. I thought that was the case about staying at a non DVC resort. I also had never seen any discount so that person must have been talking about a AP discount.
We had AP last year and then didn't renew them because we were originally planning on going to Europe for our 10 yr Anniversary and not Disney, but plans changed and now we are going back to Disney. This kind of stinks because now we have to buy AP's again and don't get to use the renewal price, but what can you do. If we do ever end up staying at Poly I guess we will have to see that AP rates we can get.
