Mobile phones advice needed

Another question which may be daft, but till you ask who knows...

DH and I both have mobile phones - can we use them in the states (both Orange pay as you go) I know it's always costly to use mobiles abroad (we use it in France) but as an emergency contact to each other if we split up, it could be useful.

Not really a technophobe, but have a few complete blind spots - mobile phones mainly!!

If they are tri band and set up for International Roaming it should be fine

Firstly what are the model numbers of your phones as a quick google seearch about them with state if tri band, also you say you have called from France so that means Orange allow you to use the phones abroad.

To call each other in the uSA from your accounts will be costly, even in an emergncy. You both have to connect via the UK so international roaming charges will be charged to both phones.
It would be cheaper to buy a couple of Tracfones in Wal Mart/Target etc for about $20 each and then you can use them for more then just emergencies whilst out in the USA, food deliveries, hotel calls, calls to each other etc...
