Mobile Phone Charger

hi all , I am one of those people who know very little about mobile phones .i only have one because the missus makes me !!

My daughter and the wife have ones that will work in america so they inform me but a work colleague told me that I needed to check that the chargers will actually work there ......

so i checked the voltage info on the chargers and the wifes says 100to 240v so that will be ok ..but the daughters is only saying its 240v .....

is there any way around this ???

is there some sort of convertor plug that will convert power as well as pins available ive looked on the net but havent seen anyhting suitbale and hopefully cheap.

I don't think you need to worry.

We have re-charded our mobiles, camera and cam-corder whilst in the US by just using the normal adaptor, never even thought about the voltage difference. They have always re-charged OK. The voltage over there is much lower than ours so I would have thought it would just take a bit longer to do and would not cause any damage to the appliance.

However if your wife or daughter was thinking of taking their hair straightners I wouldn't bother can never get mine to heat up enough to be any good.

We have gameboys which we bought in the US. When we re-charge them over here we do have to use a special transformer as well as the adaptor plug, because they will not cope with the UK level of voltage.

hence weve got alist of things to do or to check this weekend and the phones was the first one on my list

DH and I have Nokias.

We've always just taken our chargers from home without any problems

We charged DD's Gameboy DS up with the UK charger too - never thought that we might have a problem......

Sometimes the chargers work, sometimes they don't. It's really weird actually. Before you go out and buy a new charger in the states ask the front desk or the hotel if they have a charger that you can use. Alot of people leave their chargers behind at the hotel and the hotels sometimes accumulate a good collection of them and don't mind letting people use them.

We had problems with the chargers for our Nokia but took the car charger as well and used this whenever we were out and about.

We have gameboys which we bought in the US. When we re-charge them over here we do have to use a special transformer as well as the adaptor plug, because they will not cope with the UK level of voltage.

I don't think thats quite right, we bought one of our gameboys in the US, my husband is an electronics engineer and he said it was fine. I believe the plug is a transformer in itself. So when here we use the uk chargers and when we go to the US we take the US charger.

DS forgot his once and we were able to buy one out there for a few dollars

Hair Straightners - if you have got expensive good quality hair straightners (probably GHD's and mine are Fran.Futras which were bought from a salon for about 80 quid) they will heat up ok, i used mine whilst in New York and they were just the same as home.

We had a problem charging our camcorder due to the lower voltage, it was taking a long time and never fully charging. We bought a voltage adapter from an electronics store (eg the US equivalent of Dixons or Comet) if you find you're having a problem you should easily be able to get one for around $20 whilst you're over there.

Julie Ann - I have GHD's and they don't get hot enough to straighten my hair like they do at home.

That's why you need the voltage adaptor, our camcorder battery just wasn't charging properly but once we used the voltage adaptor it did (NB It's not the same as a plug adaptor, which only converts the pin type). if you use a voltage adaptor they should heat up like at home
