My dh and i are going to MNSSHP in September. Do we have to dress up? Just don't want to be out of place if we don't.

You can if you want but you definitely don't 'have to.' I've been several times and never worn a costume.

We never dress up. It's a mixed bag - some will be dressed and some want so you want be out of place either way. We usually wear Halloween t-shirts. It's just too hot for a costume in September in my opinion!

This will be our third time going to MNSSHP and the first time I just dressed the girls up (they wanted to be Mickey and Minnie), the second time I just bought Halloween T shirts from our local Disney Store for the 4 of us to wear, this next time we are going it will be just DD14, DD12, and I (DH opted out of going this time around, he wants to go to Epcot instead) and the girls decided that the 3 of us should dress up...so, we will be dressing as characters from Inside Out. DD14 will be Disgust, DD12 will be dressed as Joy, and I will be dressing as Riley. As for the OP's question, you certainly don't have to dress up if you don't want to, however you will see lots of guests walking around in some pretty elaborate looking costumes :goodvibes.

A lot of people dress up, even adults, but don't feel like you have to. One thing to keep in mind is the weather, and it's still plenty hot in October usually and some costumes might be stifling.

Our 6 yr old daughter dressed up last year and we did not however next time we will for sure! There were so many people dressed up and it was very cool.

Also we got a great tip from one of the CM's. Don't stand in line to trick or treat until late in the evening. We buzzed right through several lines that way. Also, wait to see the second parade if you can. The lines for rides are more or less walk on during the first parade and most people with small children leave after the first one. Also note that if you plan on staying until the end, take a few hours in the middle of the day for a break at the resort so the kids can get some rest for the long night.

we will be an Alice in Wonderland family! I imagine a lot of people do not dress up.

MNSSHP 2x each trip for 10 years. All adults. We always dress up. Keep it simple and cool. LOTS of adults are all adult parties and all dressed up. For us it's part of the fun.

You don't have to dress up and you won't be out of place if you don't. If you want to dress up, go for it! One of the really fun things about MNSSHP is seeing all the dressed up adults. It is such a party atmosphere and everyone is a kid again. You also don't have to go all out if you do decide to dress up. My DH wears a superhero T-shirt with his regular shorts.

This is very true. The Trick or Treating is not a priority for us. DD isn't huge on candy and we typically leave any leftover MNSSHP candy in the room and don't cart it home on the plane from WDW, so we never get in those lines early in the evening. Towards the end of the night as we pass by the trick or treat areas, she will jump through a few. I don't think we have ever waited in line. She just walks right through and gets candy.

And the candy lines can get very long which wastes precious ride time in my opinion.

You won't be out of place whatever you decide to do. You will see people that go all out, in full costumes, people who just wear themed costume type tee shirts, people who DisneyBound and people who do not dress up at all. I did the DisneyBound thing, wearing a polka dot dress and my Minnie Mouse ears.
