Last year we bought her Pocahontas costume from TDS (not bad quality wise) but I made her a cape from tan ultrasuede (looked like buckskin) with a fake fur collar. I just winged it, but she was so proud of that cape you would have thought it cost $100 instead of <$15 for the materials. I made her headdress from the feathers by the yard, that ran me ~$25 (they're not cheap!) but she was thrilled with it too. I know that even if it's not perfect she'll enjoy it. My older DD is another story. We're in the awkward age (11) and very self conscious. Plus, she chages her mind daily. I'm holding off as long as possible for her too.
I found a basic pirate costume at Joann's. . . .it was either simplicity or McCalls (whichever they had had for 99 cents during one sale, lol). It had the basic long vest, the tunic, the belt/sash (as if a pattern is really needed for that, lol) and pants. I tweeked it where neccessary, and did it in Jack's colors. . . . I remember the pattern NOT being very jack at all. . . .at least not in the colors they used for the picture. . . but a little imagination is all it took.
No coat. . . I didn't make him a coat. . . WAY too hot. It works cause during portions of the first movie he didn't wear his coat so it was acceptable. I also didn't do the hat. . . just the bandanna and I sewed strands of beads directly to it.
For his boots I got a pair of girl's boots, took off any girly decorations, and bought some matching fabric and put large cuffs around the top.
I'll have to see if I can find pictures.
Honestly, I can't remember free face painting or I would have replied to you. It may be because it takes place in Toontown, a place my girls (9 & 11 now) aren't that into anymore. You may have more of a response if you start a new thread titled something like "
