MM Warriors - Three Steps to Good Health (As of 11/18)

Sorry to hear about you robbery, Barb. I can imagine that it feels kind of spooky being in a ransacked office. Hope it gets taken care of and that you get a secure lock.

Carol

How do you guys oven cook your turkeys? anybody ever use the oven bag? A co-worker told me her best turkey ever was the one she cooked in a bag....not so sure about that! My mom always put cheesecloth on hers...we fried one last year, but it was such a mess we just dont have the energy to bother with all that this year!!!

I cook the turkey upside down and start it with about a 1/2 inch of water in the pan. Every hour or so I gently move it around so that the skin doesn't stick. Then the last hour I fip it to brown the top. It comes out without the breasts being dry. Another thing that tastes really good is garlic paste rubbed under the skin. Sometimes it's hard to find garlic paste though unless you have a hispanic section in the store.

Just a quick post. When I got to work this morning I found that we'd been broken into. Someone tore the handle off the back door  Stole a laptop, some cash and money orders :sad2: I called the police, then the landlord. Told him we need a REAL deadbolt lock on the backdoor, not the crappy bedroom door type he had on before. I'm still checking things out. It feels so creepy knowing someone was here.

I'm sorry Barb! A deadbolt isn't that expensive, so your boss should be able to do that. I'm sorry and understand why you feel creepy. It's someone invading your space that you feel safe in.

I rub softened butter between the skin and breast - it is kind of yucky, but it makes the meat tasty. I put a lrg. cut up onion and 1 cup of ckn broth in the pan and cover it for the first couple of hours and then uncovered for the last hour or so.

During the last hour I put 2 c. of water, 1 c. of salt-free chkn broth, 1 stalk celery, neck & giblets (not the liver) and one onion in a sauce pan and let it simmer for an hour or so. I strain it all into a glass measure and when the turkey is done I sieve the juices from the pan into these. Then I make a roux in the pan with some of the fat and whisk in the broth mix to this to it to make a nice gravy.

I always make the turkey and bring it to my sister's house. She hates to make turkey, but she has a bigger place so we have the dinner there. She makes the stuffing, potatoes & sides and my other sister brings desserts.

Hi everyone!

Barb: what is thickN thin? I saw something in Walgreens the other day and it was used to thicken food for someone that couldn't eat thin sauces and such. But I think it did have some carbs? Not sure and if it is what you are talking about then I can recheck it.
So sorry to hear about the robbery! That is so scary!

Kathy your muffin sounds a lot like the 1 min bread that someone else posted (on the old threads) I tried it and it was so good my whole family likes it! I haven't tried it with coco yet but I do think it sounds so good!

Laura :grouphug: to you hope you feel better!!
Nell: if you talk to her plz let her know she has my get well wishes

Natalie: I have seen Snuggie's at Walgreens also! They seem to have lots of stuff:goodvibes

Oh, Kathy. That is so hard. One of my good friends was a crack addict. She lost everything. Her condo, her nice car, custody of her daughter and some of her teeth. She has been clean for almost three years now. I used to pray that she would be arrested because I thought that at least she would be safe.

This is a dumb question but is up with the Robittusin? Is there alcohol in it?

Please keep us posted and I am praying for Michael and your family.

Not only is there alcohol in it (the first thing on the list) but the dextromothorphan (sp?) acts like an opiate when taken in large quantities. So, you get the high as though you took opium.
His PO told him since there is no way for them to do a drug test on him for it, he would arrest him for under aged drinking. I know he has shoplifted it in the past, and not very good at shoplifting (that's how they got him in jail to begin with) and we are hoping that he will shoplift again to get some, and get caught. As soon as his 4 months in prison were up, first thing he did when he got home was go get some of the robitussin. We just found this out from this teacher. She is something else.
Robin, thanks for the idea of the "tough love." That is what got him into the half way house to begin with. We told him we love him, but don't want him at the house. He is more than welcome if he cleans up his act, but not before then. I honestly don't know if a "boot camp" type thing would work for him. He is so intelligent, he knows how far he can push this stuff before it "harms" you. He has come pretty close about 3 times to OD'ing.
Ok, going to read some more posts.

I did that one year. It was really good and moist. But not much in the way of juice for gravy or noodles. If you make one like that, use some chicken broth to make noodles or the gravy.

Hi Melanie. ThickNThin Not Starch is made from vegetable gums. Net carbs is 0. Anything you thicken with flour or corn starch adds carbs and this is a good substitute. Very, very little is needed.

When I use a bag, I cut big chunks of onion, celery and apple to add to the bag around the turkey. Keeps it from sticking and makes nice flavor to the juice. I cook the giblets in a saucepan, cut up and add to the juice which I pour out of the bag after turkey is removed. I get so much gravy, I always have leftovers for the dog.

I'm not feeling very well today, so I might go rest. I went from being pretty tired to feeling like I was going to faint in the middle of the night when I got up to do the middle of the night routine. Kind of scary. I wonder if my blood sugar or blood pressure is off somehow. Just going to try to get some extra rest today and see what happens. Love you all and prayers for Kate, Kathy and Barb and anyone else with sadness or challenges today.:grouphug:

Kathy: Did you put that muffin recipe on the recipe thread for us? Thanks!

Not yet. I will right now.

I just tried it with a bit of s/f vanilla and the s/f raspberry. OMG it is sooo good. Wish I could put a few frozen blueberries in it too. I can wait. Found my new found love I think. I just need to figure out how many carbs. The original recipe is like 1.5 net carbs. That is using flax. I am using ground up pecans.

Lisa, I'm sorry you're feeling like crap! I will send some prayers for you also. Hope just laying around and relaxing a bit will help. Sending some  and :lovestruc

I just posted it. If it needs tweeked or anything, please let me know :)

Thanks, Kath! Whatever keeps us interested and on plan is really cool - variety is important. That's what always made me bored on Aitkens after a while - not enough variety. We had a pot luck at work today and they had pumpkin cheesecake, cookies, cakes, pastas...I had cheese and Caesar salad then came home for my real lunch. It was easy to pass up the goodies! I can't believe how this is working. My lower stomach still has a pooch, but it doesn't really show in my clothes now. I'm happy to be heading into the holidays in a more positive spirit.:yay: At that early bird special at Macy's yesterday I got a $395 leather jacket for my son and sweaters for each of my men. With the morning sale price and my coupon, I paid $95 for all 3 items! There are some great bargains out there now.

Thanks, Kathy! I taped Biggest Loser and I think I'll just go veg and watch some of it - maybe take a nap. I'm really glad I didn't have to drive any clients around today.

Thanks for all the turkey suggestions!! I think I will keep the bag and add the veggies and stuff...keep it simple, since I have to work the day before and the day after!!

Barb - so sorry about the break in! It is scary and violating to think someone has been in your space...did you find anything personal missing? Hope not! Get those deadbolts!!

Lisa - so sorry you feel weird...if it persists, you need to get checked out in case something is going on! wow, great shopping deals!!

Kathy - sounds like Michael is too smart for his own good...hard to believe such a smart kid can do something so destructive to himself.

I just had another idea...we need a birthday list!!! I would be happy to do the list-making if y'all want to do it...e-mail or private message me and I will make the list and send it out!! OMG, Pony is bored at work again!

Robin: Your bird will cook faster in the bag, so check it before you think you should. Remember to flour the inside of the bag and cut slits in the top per the instructions. If you stick some of the veg in first and then put the turkey on top, it won't stick. You will need two people, ideally, to take it out - one to hold the bag up and one to pull it out. Maybe you need a midwife, come to think of it! OK off I go to try to get well. I will call the doc if it doesn't stabilize.

 Sorry you're not well. If you're not better it might be good to see the doctor. I can't remember, do you take any prescriptions that might need review?
