We will be at MK this Friday and it is calling for an 80% chance of rain. We really can't move out days around so we will be there regardless of the rain. I also know that it could be a lot or a little so we will just chance it.

What indoor things are there to do while it rains? Also I am trying to move up our BOG reservation. Does the threat of rain scare off people (maybe locals who can come other days)?

TIA

Odds are, the rain won't last all day. But in the winter time, it might. If the rain is only going to last for part of the day, head to Tomorrowland. That is where you can spend large chunks of time indoors with short walks between attractions. The entire queue for Space Mountain is indoors, (except on really crowded days.) Carousel of Progress is an indoor attraction that eats up 20 minutes. Add in Buzz, Stitch and Laugh Factory, and you could easily spend a couple of hours in Tomorrowland and hardly get wet. Now, if it is going to be a persistent, all day rain, your put on a poncho and deal with the rain.

Most of the attractions are indoors and many lines have cover over them if they are not indoors. The big issue will be going between attractions.

Attractions that are outdoors or have lines without a cover are:

  • Jungle Cruise (each boat has a cover, but if the rain comes from the side, you would get wet)
  • Splash Mountain - Line has no cover and there is no cover during the start of the ride and the end of the ride
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
  • Tomorrowland Transit Authority - some sections are covered, others are not
  • Tomorrowland Speedway
Others will have to advise on what else is outdoors.

If it was me, I would plan for raincoats or ponchos with a couple of towels and just know that I would be wet. Try to wear shoes that dry quickly or you do not mind walking in while they are wet.

MAgic Kingdom in the rain is really no big deal as there is so much to do there. Bring Ponchos for sure, but our favorites when it rains are any shows like Country Bears, Carrousel of Progress, Tiki Birds, Monsters. And for rides you can hit a lot of Fanstasyland ones without having to step out into the rain for that long. Really rain at the MK isn't too big of a deal, unless there is lightening or really bad rain the outdoor rides stay open.

Rain does scare people off if it's a heavy rain, seems if it's light people just poncho up and tour. Sometimes after a big storm parks might clear out for a little bit cause people got drenched and what to change back at their room.

We had several days of on and off rain on our winter trip last year. If you have light rain and ponchos, I highly recommend the Barnstormer, Dumbo, Tomorrowland speedway area. If the rain is light, they still operate and become walk on rides. We had fun on them with ponchos.

Throw on a poncho and go enjoy yourself. Rain clears the way to shorter lines!

If it's a thunderstorm, that's a different story and several attractions will have to close down.

When youngest DS was young, if it rained at MK we headed over to Space Mountain. They had a lot of arcade games over there and I could usually find a place to sit while he played the games.

I actually like raining days as it does lower park attendance a bit (not a lot but enough to notice slightly less wait times). If it rains in the morning near RD time, usually people will stay at the resort a bit and hold off heading to the parks until the rain subsides.

Good news is there are a lot of indoor attractions to visit at MK while it rains. If there is a period of rain, use this as a time to visit all of the theatre type shows (Carousel of Progress, Philharmagic, Hall of Presidents, Country Bear Jamboree etc...). In fact, most of the Fantasyland rides (It's a small world, Peter Pan's flight, Little Mermaid) are close together and indoors so you could still trek on without getting too wet. You could also take this time during the day to do some Monorail resort hopping. All of the resorts have covered Monorail stations so you could visit all hotels with the Monorail and not get wet.
