MK today...

It was. It really was strange seeing so much be under refurb at one time - and we travel off season frequently when things are normally down.

The attraction wait times were just strange. When I initially checked mobile magic it had listed Pirates as a 5 minute wait - we went ahead and did a stand by for Carpets (25 minutes) and by the time we got to Pirates it was 35 minutes. Mobile Magic had a hard time keeping up - it was like people just moved in such large droves - one thing would empty and the next would be slammed.

Haunted Mansion was kickin - DH and DS jumped in a little before the parade was over (I was waiting with DD at Yankee Trading Post). When the parade let out - HM was SWARMED! Line looked like Christmas time!

We did MK on October 2nd and the wall wan not up, you could see the graveyard. We went back on the 6th and the wall was up and the CM told us they were doing "ground work" and had no estimated finish time. I thought that was a pretty ridiculous time to pick to do that work in October with MNSSHP going on when HM is kind of the center piece of the Halloween party.

Honestly, I figured they had boarded it up during the day because they had something "special" set up back there for the halloween parties. I'm boggled that it was up during the parties.

I have no need to subscribe to Touringplans.com. Again I didn't expect it not to be crowded - all I said was that it was a strange crowd. Free dining absolutely has an impact on park crowds - its part of a package and a majority of the people using it don't have ap's - therefore have park tickets. When you throw enough promotions in at a traditionally slower time of year - add in fall breaks from schools, holiday weekends, park festivals etc... it becomes a not so slower time of year. To say that October is offseason anymore just isn't accurate.

I was there this past weekend and was so frustrated on Saturday night that we ended up leaving MK at 8:30 because we couldn't even get into Pecos Bill's or any other CS restaurant to order, much less find a place to sit. People were putting their trays on top of trash bins and eating while standing beside the trash. As we were leaving we watched people flood in-it was astounding. The wait times for all the rides except Philharmagic were over 30 minutes. I've been going in October since 1992 and this was insane. We're going back again next weekend for my son's birthday but if it's that busy again, we'll probably cancel our December trip.

I really think the Holiday weekend had something to do with it because we got there on October 1st and went to MK on the 2nd which was a Saturday and we walked on everything and never had to use a Fast Pass. We started to notice an increase in crowds on Thursday the 7th and as we were leaving that Friday morning the 8th I noticed the bus stops were jam packed with people when they had only had 8-10 people at the most waiting at them during our trip.

Think it through some more. "the goal is to get people to say onsite rather than offsite." Well, yeah, exactly. But when you say "stay" you mean where your hotel room is. When disney says "stay" they mean "don't leave disney property." What you are saying is something like "free dining doesn't cause more people to travel to central florida during "off-season," it takes people who would already go and stay off-site and moves them off-site. There are a couple of problems with that, to me. First, I just don't agree that it doesn't encourage people to travel who wouldn't have already. Some people see it is a good deal and it encourages them. Second, the whole point of moving people on property is to "trap them." First, the have to buy park tickets as part of the package. Second, they have meals at wdw so they are less likely to go spend a day at universal, sea world, wet and wild, etc. Throw in magic express and the circle is complete and the trap is set. Third, some of the restaurants are in the parks. So it seems to me, even if it is only moving more people on property who would have stayed off-property anyway (which I don't think is accurate), it would still increase crowds in parks. Yes, the point is to increase travel during the off-season, and that is what it has done. Same thing as having the food and wine festival, and halloween decorations. Etc. They have had an impact. I can remember October 10-12 years ago having much, much lower crowds. So Disney did the smart thing and came up with ways to encourage people to travel during the off-season. And to keep those people on property. The "free dining" is really a great way to keep people at disney the whole trip. Also, you have to remember that so many schools are saving money by having fewer class days and having breaks in October, so there are more kids out of school than there used to be. The crowd right now is much more like a "summer crowd" in terms of age demographics than it is the "mostly preschool" crowds that used to be more typical in months like Sept. and May. A wider spread of ages.

Crowds always peak on the weekends and that is more pronounced in "off-season" and it is more pronounced on long holiday weekends, even if most people aren't off that holiday some are. The crowd now is sort of interesting. Yesterday at Magic Kingdom, if I had to rate it from 1-10, with 10 being the most crowded I've ever seen and 1 the least, I would only rate it a 6 or 7, not that crowded generally. but the line waits I would rate as an 8 or 9. In some ways, WDW management is treating this time (understandably) the way they treat off-season (refurbish rides, etc.), but the crowd levels are higher than in the past (due to multiple factors) which made for pretty big lines yesterday (Yes a holiday weekend day). So having things like small world closed (that holds a lot of people) makes bigger lines other places. Throw in a thunder mt. down time in the morning and a space mt. down time in the afternoon and the lines get bigger. That exacerbated on the weekend, it will go down during the week.

But even Friday at the food and wine festival was higher than weekdays last year, just subjective experience. Again, though, long weekend.

The fast food was another sort of goof. Remember there are all these free dining credits, and a large general weekend crowd. But pirate and parrot is closed for refurb, and tomorowland terrace isn't open either (usually these are open at high crowd times, which yesterday was). So habor house, pecos bills, cosmic rays, Pinocchio's were slammed. So they had to go to the holiday plan of keep-your-parties-together, you can't enter the seating area of pecos bills and columbia harbor house until you are all together and have your food. They try not to let people without food in to the dining area. So guests have to take their kids in line. Personally, I really don't like that, for a variety of reasons. They try to get it controlled by putting signs in the middle of the hall, positioning cm's on the left side to let people back "out" and lining people up to go through the right only to enter. Then they ask how many you've got, and will try to help you find a table.

At extreme crowd times, it helps in a way because it cuts down on "table holders" and hopefully people can find a table. But it isn't a great experience, because I don't like our kids having to wait in the line, it makes it a pain to go back to the "helpings" line and bathroom, etc. If you get there a little early for lunch or late, not during the peak times, it is less of a hassle, even during the more major holidays, because they haven't got that set up and going yet.

There is no need for something like "touring plans. com" for a basic understanding of crowd levels, just think about it a little.

yeah I agree with almost all this. the free dining is awesome and it is why I go when it is available...saves my clan of 7 over $2k for an 8 night stay. So i can do 8 nights for 7 people fully loaded with tickets, rooms (2 rooms), food and flights for $7500. now that's a bargain.

re: Touring plans...the flip side to your points is it is only $11 for a year and they do all that thinking for you.

Re: Peco Bills. wow to your post and others. I have been there 05, 06, 07 in the fall and I have fond memories of one time literally having that ENTIRE dining room to ourselves. I mean, literally..we were the ONLY people there. crazy.

Aww... i am so trying not to get bummed cuz originally DH wanted to go the week after Thanksgiving but I talked him out of it cuz I said that Oct would be just as good and we could see MNSSHP. If it is super crowded I am never gonna hear the end of it! Oy:sick:

Wow...even the People Mover had a line? I don't think I have ever seen that!

Yep..... That's a SURE sign of a crazy busy crowd!

Columbus Day weekend is traditionally very busy. Other parts of October should be far more manageable.

is toontown closed?

I was going to ask the same question: are Mickey & Minnie's houses still open? We'll be there in about 3.5 weeks, and as I haven't read anywhere that they're closed (though I know they were originally slated for a "fall 2010" closure), I'm keeping my fingers crossed they'll still be open when we're there.

Isn't this a blackout period for Free Dining? If so, I don't see how that could affect the crowds any more than the holiday weekend?

Sorry if I misunderstood or am misinformed.

the weekend was, but if you checked in before the weekend it carried over, at least that's what I thought.

Still open as of today :)

3) School Fall Breaks (btw, when did this start happening - what happened to school from approximately Labor Day to Thanksgiving for a 2-day break, then onto Christmas for a 2 week break with the occasional one-day holiday thrown in there. Week-long school vacations in October? Times are a-changin)

My children started school on August the 2nd, thats why they get fall break. In our area of the country since I was in kingergarden (and I'm 29 now) we have not started after Labor Day, it was always in August and moved up a little more each year, my senior year we started around the 20th. That just doesn't happen much in the south back then and even now. I would love for my kids to not have to go back to school so early but that would require home schooling and I'm not up to that.

I'm confused?

Yes it is. The blackout started on the 8th and ends around the 21st I believe.
