Im getting my booster sometime this week and was wondering about the efficacy of mixing shots. Does it really matter one way or the other?

Our entire country - Canada - mixed first and second doses for some. Ie. You got the second dose, Pfizer or Moderna that was available the day of your second shot. So so far it is all looking fine.

And I am sure they are doing the same with our boosters.

Mixing (but only for boosters) was authorized by the State of California before the FDA did so.

At least with the US FDA recommendations, there are some slight differences. The Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty booster is the same dose as the primary vaccination. But the Moderna dose is half of the primary vaccination.

The Moderna COVID-19 single booster dose is half of the dose that is administered for a primary series dose and is administered at least six months after completion of a primary series of the vaccine.

I don’t think it really matters. I had 2 Moderna shots and then boosted with Pfizer. Still had a reaction for 24 hours. Don’t really want to get annual booster.

In Australia we are mixing. At the moment only Pfizer is available for boosters and some people had Astra Zeneca (which isn’t MRNA) for their first and apparently that combo works very well. We’re also using Moderna for 1 & 2 but as that hasn’t been available for long enough none of those people are up to boosters yet.

It doesn't really matter but according to some chart I saw several weeks ago, mixing seems to confer a bit more immunity. If you had Pfizer the first two and add a Moderna booster you get an X% raise in antibody levels than you would've gotten if you stuck with Pfizer. If you had two Moderna vaccines and then boosted with a Pfizer, you got another X% of immunity boost above the amount you would have gotten if you had stuck with the same vaccine.

When I got my booster, they had not approved mixing yet, but when my husband got his booster they had, so he decided to mix. Thought "what the heck, if I'm getting this thing I may as well get all the boost I can."

Also, I know you do not have AstraZeneca but the stats out on our mixing Moderna or Pfizer with AZ showed higher efficacy then two shots of AstraZeneca.
Millions of Canadians are mixed-vax (viral vector and mRNA) and many other countries used similar protocols including Great Britain, Australia and Russia. There now have been many studies recording the benefits. This one from Popular Science is particularly informative and easy to understand:

I've got AZ and two doses of Moderna already on-board; if boosters are recommended for people in my situation I'm going to try for Pfizer, just to cover all the bases.

I am debating this for my booster on Friday. I got Pfizer for my initial series but am thinking of getting Moderna for the booster. I am worried about having side effects though since it seems those that got Moderna had greater side effects. But I’ll do the same prep and aftercare I did for the second dose and cross my fingers.

I had pfizer for the first round... I will probably stick with that because I like things to match. I don't think there is anything wrong with mixing them, but my sense of having everything match overrides this for me.

Its been said that mixing and matching is fine.
Personally though I opted to go with the same one as my first two which was Moderna.
I chose this for consistency and because experts have said that it is the vaccine with the most longevity.

my unvaxed adult son tested positive the day after thanksgiving. On Wednesday my double vaxed (Pfizer) husband tested positive.
I have taken 2 rapids and a pcr test all negative so far. I have triple moderna. I have had cold symptoms though which is why I have tested so many times. My parents who were here are also triple vaxed with moderna and they did not get it either.

my first shot was in February and at that time you just got what they gave you.
My husbands first shot was April and he specifically made the appt for Pfizer.
Here they weren’t mixing the second shot.

for my booster, I made a moderna appt.

Good to know. Sounds like your husband's vax had waned (I also got two doses of Pfizer in April). Hoping both your son and husband have mild illness.

My husband mixed his. First two were Pfizer. Booster was Moderna. He breezed through his Pfizers but did get sick with his booster.

After reading what @Pea-n-Me posted, I may reschedule my son's booster. He has an appointment for Moderna but he's only 25 so Pfizer is probably lower risk.

Just my own personal experience--- Had J & J first--- Got Moderna booster- Man, was I sick the next day ! I dont regret doing it AT ALL, but wow--- high fever, chills, nausea - you name it. Just my own experience. Obviously, YMMV.

Got sick and a fever after all 3 Moderna shots.
What I question is why people are afraid to feel sick from it since the stronger the reaction the better its working to protect you.

Well no one likes to purposefully feel bad. It's probably what's kept me from getting my Shingles shot. But ultimately, I'll get it, just as I did with these vaccines.

I went Pfizer on all 3 as I like consistency. But from what I read I do think Moderna has a slight edge on efficacy. My parents tripled with Moderna.

if I had J&j I would have definitely mixed.

gotta admit since getting booster feeling invincible again. I just hope we get to a point we don’t need this every 6months to keep efficiacy up or I know a lot won’t keep up with it.
