Mixed breed or "hybrid" dogs

Wow! Looks like I left when thing finally started to settle down. I too, am glad for this thread and all that I have learned. We certainly do get heated when you touch something so near and dear to our hearts...our fur babies! I definatley have learned some things that I will take with me next time I am in the market for a new dog...I am hoping that won't be for a very long time though. Thanks for all the good information that was given here....I am glad to see we have all learned something from one another and  our furbabies with all our hearts!!

As you can see by my name, I love dogs. I have two right now. I just came back from Disney. The twelve days I was gone, I didn't stop thinking them. I think more than the teenagers I left behind.

Anyway, I, peronally, cannot imagine getting a dog anywhere but he shelter. I have had four. One I grew up with (she died at 13), one we adopted at a year and passed away at 12, and the two I have now. I totally trust the shelters because the screen these dogs for about two weeks. They list what the temperment is and who they are good with. In my case with Sisi, I needed a dog with small children, an infant, and older children. I have six. I also wanted one that was house broken and over the puppy stage. With this many kids, I did not want to go through the peeing, pooping thing. So we went in and was told Sienna was our only match. I am telling you, she is the best. She is such a smart, beautiful and affectionate dog. She loves my kids. The four year old is always playing with her. I know she has shepard and I think cattle dog. It doesn't matter to me because she is who she is and I love her no matter what. I can't tell you what a great dog we got.

I did not think I could get any luckier, then we found Sammy. He is this big, overweight dog who has the body of a lab and the head and legs of a beagle. Too funny. He is great. Not a real cuddler but a kind, quiet dog. Everyone loves him.

So, please don't overlook the older, shelter dogs. I could go on and tell you about my dog Abbigail but I would start to cry, I miss her every day. Also, my mother has a black lab who is a little daft but wouldn't hurt a fly. Older dogs are just as cut as puppies. Sammy is 12 and we got him at 8. I think this dog will outlive the others.

Take care.

Very good point.

I got my first cocker in 1980 from what I now know was what you call a backyard breeder - a very close family friend who decided to breed his dog. He did not sell them - he gave the puppies away carefully. A very kind, decent man.

My Sundance was my first dog and truly was the love of my life.
But he developed a terrible mean streak when he was about 3 years old as did two of his littermates.

It turns out that the father (only 1 year old when bred) had a mean streak that turned up a year or so later. My dog's littermates ended up having to be put down after vicious unprovoked attacks - 42 stitches in the owner's face for one.

My Sundance never bit me (or anyone else) but I had to be very, very careful not to ever allow him around strangers without my being present. I probably could not have kept him if I had small children.

I got my next cocker from a cocker rescue. Not only was he past the puppy stage, but his temperment had already been tested. He was the sweetest dog ever. I could totally take any food out of his mouth - I would have been missing an arm if I'd tried that with Sundance.

If you already have a dog I know how it is to love it, love it, love it unconditionally no matter where it came from. But if you are still looking the shelters can be a great source.

Gabe and Chloe do look a bit alike! The folks who run the shelter think his mom was a golden and his father was a yellow lab. Poor fella has an overbite that makes his mouth look like an alligator's when you pull his muzzle up. It makes eating chewy food a little tough for him, so we make sure he gets small pieces of food. He hasn't missed any meals!

I think it's pretty safe to say, there is a Golden somewhere in there! He's adorable!

Chloe looks so sweet - she must be one of those dogs who has to have something in her mouth ALL the time. Rasta is the same way.

Oh yeah! And she "talks" the whole time!

Today I met a "Dachsador" they paid 800 from a breeder in Austin and he only does it once a year and they is a waiting list .
He is half Dachshund and half you guess it Labrador . He is as cute as he can be wierd looking body but he is cute!

So the new dog of the day is Dachsador:)

anyone else seen this yet ?

OK, I'm mystified - I posted on this thread waaay back when, but it seems to have poofed...(if I wrote something inappropriate wouldn't the mods let me know?).

Anyway, part of my post concerned people making assumptions about what kind of dog they "needed." ie - small yard = small dog. Shouldn't the activity level/ demands of the breed be the 1st consideration? Borders aren't necessarily big dogs, but they need TONS of space.

Another part of my original post was how we got our 1st dog (or rather how DFi got her). Some jerk tossed her out of a car when she was about 7 weeks old & he picked her up & took her home. 13 years later, she's had a better life than she ever would have had if she'd stayed with the original owner. She's completely spoiled rotten.

Have to agree with some other people, the thing is we all love our dogs, and animals in general, passionately. Reading stories about any animal abuse literally brings me to tears. I was at work, reading about someone tying his dog to the back of a car & dragging her for 2 miles, than leaving her in the middle of the road to die. The dog was a Border, like our "youngest" & I started crying, imagining someone doing that to my dog. Being "irresponsible" in the treatment of a child is a crime, why should it be any less when it involves an animal? Buyer-on-a-whim, backyard breeder, or less than impressed show dog owner, there are LIVES involved & every one of them deserves a good life.

Seriously, he's cute? How big does this creature get, or was this still a puppy?

And...are you working on those pic posting skills? Very anxious to see the "weenie". :teeth:
