Mistake Banking - HELP

Background - we purchased this past Feb - bought direct into Riviera (fell in love with the place) - 100 direct points - we got 2019 points included (without MF), Sept UY

Our next planned trip was going to be Nov, so we banked the 2019 points. Then decided we wanted to go this August for MM - made a reservation but then realized the points were BORROWED from 2020 :(

Now we have to use our banked 2019 points for our originally planned Nov 2020 Trip but probably won't be 100 points, and the points we (mistakenly) borrowed for August will have to be used by this coming Sept.

Any thoughts how to handle this? We will probably have 10-20 points after Nov trip (2019 UY, banked points) that will expire by next August

Help!

Unfortunately, there isn’t anything you can do. Your Aug 2020 trip is in your Sept 2019 UY. Since you had already banked your 2019 points, you had to borrow,

Borrowing and banking are final transactions. The only option is to maybe try for an extra night in November to use up banked points.

Or, offer to rent one night out with the banked points so you at least get something for them,

Laugh out loud. I have a degree in economics and haven't a clue to what dvc members are talking about. It sounds so complicated from doing bookings to banking to everything. God Bless it sounds interesting but very complicated to buying to resale to offering up points.... Wow

Call Member Services ASAP. I have heard they do make adjustments sometimes.

Stick around and you can learn from the very helpful people around here.

They will sometimes allow banking past a window as a one time exception, or I’d there is an emergency, yes, they have been known to adjust.

Typically, though, they won’t reverse borrowing and banking which is what would need to happen in this particular guess.

It really isn’t that complicated. You have A set of points to use every year, If you don’t use them all, you can bank them into the next year to use, If you need more than you get each year, you can borrow from the following year,

I would call. The broker/owner who sold us one of our resales thought they were doing us a favor by banking points, which we hadn't wanted to happen. MS was able to do a "one time exception" (expect to hear that ;) ), and un-bank the points so we could use them.

OP, call Member Services. No-one here knows for sure what M.S. will or won't do. From experience, they can do many things.

Sometimes, you are right, they will give One time exceptions. But they can’t do anything when points are in a reservation already.

Unless those are canceled, points can not be moved around.

While it doesn’t hurt to make a call, it is also important that people understand what most likely will happen, especially for future planning.

Hello neighbor! We just bought Riviera in September.

Have you used your welcome home booking yet? This isn’t listed anywhere, but supposedly when you buy direct from Disney you can call Disney to book your first trip and even if there is no availability they will use a little magic and get you your reservation. I believe they will pull from their personal inventory to get you that first reservation. If you haven’t used this yet, then maybe you can call them and see if they can use this “magic” to get you the reservation you really want and fix your point mess. I’m sure as a new owner they will understand that this happens and will possibly be willing to fix this issue.

I did get a welcome call from Disney after we closed where they wanted to answer any questions and help with our first reservation. We didn’t need to use this since the dates/resort we wanted was available online, but I did get the impression that what they were offering was this welcome home booking I had heard about.

UPDATE: called today and they unbanked some points that were banked
Basically with our current AUG and NOV trips, we used all of the 2019 points I previously banked :)
So now we still have all of 2020 points (coming sept) to use or bank for 2021 😃

@Coffee66, just think of UY as Fiscal Year. That's all it is, really. And the buying and selling is just real estate - the hard part is choosing which resort and which UY will suit your family best!

It can be sketched out on a piece of paper in a minute. It’s easy when you’re doing it. But learning new things, especially in abstract, is hard. Doesn’t mean the thing is hard, but the learning is.

Did they put the 2020 points back into your 2020 UY, too? So they unbanked the 2019 and unborrowed the 2020?

What stops me is prepaying for vacations. I like booking trips spur of the moment. Reading postings about booking in 11 month window or 7 months out. I don't think I could hook that far out. Too active and then paying maintenance fees somehow bothers me. It's amazing thou reading the posts. I wonder how many people will try to rent points sell points because of covid19 or the market down 20% and now in a bear market.

A quick question. If one wanted a 1 bedroom at AKL for 2 weeks every year in the fall (October) what would it take? How many points do you need and what is the money you need upfront. What are the maintenance fees every year. Not a clue What the cost is.

All of this information is easily available.

Here is a link to the DVC resorts, which also includes a link to the points charts. You can find the total points cost on the chart, especially since I don't know if you want a value, concierge, standard view, or savanna view 1 bedroom.
