What stops me is prepaying for vacations. I like booking trips spur of the moment. Reading postings about booking in 11 month window or 7 months out. I don't think I could hook that far out. Too active and then paying maintenance fees somehow bothers me. It's amazing thou reading the posts. I wonder how many people will try to rent points sell points because of covid19 or the market down 20% and now in a bear market.
If you are more of a spur of the moment traveler, then DVC isn't going to be a good product for you. Points based timeshares are a first come, first serve program. That means that everyone who owns points at a certain home resort get to book every day of the year 11 months ahead of that check in date. You are competing with everyone. If you want a resort that is not your home resort, everyone gets to try for that 7 months in advance of that date. There are only so many rooms of each type and if you aren't booking at those times, you will limit what you can get.
Last minute for DVC is like 3 to 4 months out, and in many cases, especially if you want studios or travel at busy DVC times...which are not always the same as busy Disney times...you would get out of luck.
Best to stick with paying cash, or renting a reservation from a DVC owner who can book it on points. This way, if there isn't anything available for DVC, you have the cash side to fall back on.
