Really because I see lots of posters telling then not to, that they are wrong or immoral for thinking of doing it.
In my book your not a tax payer if your tax liability is negative or zero dollars into the system.
You're assuming people have the means, time and equipment to cook unprocessed foods. If they are in a homeless shelter they have little to no access to a stove or oven. They are lucky if they have a microwave. If they work long hours or have multiple jobs (as many do) they may not have the time to soak bean and slow cook oatmeal. They may also lack knowledge on how to do so. Also, many inner cities are food desserts so they are limited to what the small shops around them may stock and most aren't stocking legumes and grains. Its not like Whole Foods or Sprouts will open a store in East Harlem that take food stamps. Saying they can just do A B or C is not a practical solution when they may face limits that you don't.
So, kids, then?

kids cant apply for food stamps unless they have children themselves.MTE
I have a girl in my Girl Scout troop that lives in a homeless shelter. It used to be a hotel. They live in a hotel room with a microwave and tiny fridge.
One of my 9 yr old sons friends lives in a local hotel. They have a very small fridge and no real stove to cook with. I'm sure they have a microwave but other than that nothing. I know he lives basically on shelf stable food. Making it like the WIC system would mean he would starve. They have no way to "cook" real foods like dry beans or rice. How many other families are in this same situation? What would they do? where would they go to cook this food?
Yes, it's terrible that children get to eat.
I can't stand when people judge what's in my cart and I am an upper middle class white woman living in an affluent area. I cannot imagine what it's like for someone to be judged constantly for everything they do just because they haven't had the privileges that I do.
haha your funnykids cant apply for food stamps unless they have children themselves.
I think its terrible that parents would waste food stamps and not try to make them last as long as possible. So it wrong to judge, but its ok for a child to go hungry for a week before Snap card gets refilled????????
how to cook dried beans in a microwave
- Microwave Cooking. To cook beans in your microwave, place drained, soaked beans in a container with 6-8 cups of fresh hot water, cover andcook at full power for 8-10 minutes or until boiling. Reduce power 50% and cook another 15-20 minutes or until beans are tender.
What makes you (or me, or anyone) qualified to decide?
So when do we get the post about the lady who couldn't buy dog food on ebt so she bought steak for her dogs? Or how about the one with the lady who buys $300 worth of groceries (or has it gone up to $500 now?) with ebt and goes out and gets in a brand new BMW (or Camri or Jaguar or whatever)? Or, I know, the one where the lady tells the cashier "I really need more money. Guess its time to have another kid".
I know they are coming, they always do.
Most of you here have no idea what is like to live on foodstamps. Even those that "work in the system" many times do not have a clue. Its not easy. Your kids are still normal kids that want treats. You say "they should buy oatmeal". So, if your child hates oatmeal and refuses to eat it, you only have enough money to buy oatmeal or Frosted Flakes for the month. Your kid will eat the Frosted Flakes or will not have breakfast if you get the oatmeal. What are you going to do? Well, why do you expect them to do any different?
Kids will eat cereal for a snack as well as breakfast. Not many will eat oatmeal for a snack. So, she buys enough cereal, she takes care of a meal and snack every day rather than one meal.
Its not excuses its actual facts to say they may not have a way to cook oatmeal. Or mom has to leave for work before the kids get up, cereal is safer than the kid cooking oatmeal.
Do we really want to give the government so much control over one group of society? They are poor so we "upper class" get to tell them how they should feed their kids? Give them education and information but telling them what they should be allowed to make the final choices.
Ever tried this?
I cook dried beans from scratch quite often (on my stove) and it takes HOURS of boiling to get many kinds of beans tender. Not sure that 30 minutes in a microwave is gonna do the trick....beans need to be boiled, and that's what this "recipe" is doing, except I can pretty much guarantee it's going to take successive amounts of 15-20 minutes of time. Lentils maybe 30 minutes. Black beans? A bare minimum of 1-2 hours, even after soaking.
cant they don't have anything but a micro wave. What they mean to say is people wouldn't.I guess you didn't read the post a few pages back that mentioned that they may not be able to use their vouchers to buy the cheaper milk because it's not on the approved list. I guess it's just easier to judge.
Apparently, taxpayers get to sit in judgment on everyone else because they know everything about everyone's circumstances and are excellent at handing out advice.![]()
What makes you (or me, or anyone) qualified to decide?
1. i have lived as that poor child
2. i refuse to be a leech as a grown able body person
No one is saying they are stupid. I'm not. You do realize some homeless shelters or housing situations don't have appliances? That's nothing to cook or prepare or store certain types of food.http://www.miamidade.gov/transit/transportation-disadvantaged-program-guidelines.asp
Most cities have programs like free bus passes for under 150% of poverty level
As far as cooking you have to be joking all I need to cook rice is water, rice, pot and stove/ microwave. tons of out reach programs give away pots, all government apartments have to have a cooking source.
I find it more "let them eat cake" rude that people really think poor people are plain stupid.
Next excuse of why all people on food stamps can't be held to higher standard.
You do realize a lot of people truly don't have so much as a microwave???no I haven't, I might. What im doing is being a brat. People keep saying otherscant they don't have anything but a micro wave. What they mean to say is people wouldn't.
