Last time we went to WDW we chickened out out of going on the spinning version of the ride (all theose OTT safety warnings scared us!).

I'm quite keen to go on the spinning version because to be honest I didnt think that much of the non spinning version.....

Does the spinning version spin you upside down, or is it just horizontal, and is really THAT bad?;)

You don't go upside down, just around (it is a centrifuge). I am the worst travel sick person ever, I went on the ride, wore my travel sickness bands and was not sick. However I did have that travel sickness feeling for several hours afterwards. As much as I enjoyed the ride, I doubt I would do it again. However we rode the ride the week it opened, I hear they have calmed it down since then!

i dont get sick with rides or travel yet this made me ill.

We went on it before it had two sides and i hated it, we had to return to the hotel as I felt so bad

I say try it once and decide for yourself. Go midway between meals if you can too. I have ridden it and it is the only ride that has ever made me feel rough. I didn't want to do anything for the rest of the evening.

I *may* try it again this year but probably of a morning and see how I feel.

DH always goes Orange side while I go green (which is great for baby swap as we pick who rides forst ny the shorest queue!)

I went on the spinning version last year, we were sat next to a pair who had just come off the less intense version and wanted to try the intense one.

I loved it!

I was a little worried about feeling ill as i usually do with things spinning (including Tea Cups!!!) but i was fine. As long as you concentrate on what's happening on the screen you should be ok. It's so realistic and i think that you should really give it go and experience something really smart!!

My other half wouldn't even go on the less intense version because she doesn't like tight areas but i think she might give it a go this time round. And if there's no queue i'll probably jump of the intense one. But i have to admit all the warnings did make me think twice!!!:rotfl2: Suppose people don't expect an experience like that at Disney when you think about their most intense rollercoaster is probably Space Mountain/Everest.

Thanks everyone I will give it a go (and force DF too :lmao:) I get travel sick in cars but never have on a ride - I have read to have a banana before you go on this - this was advice from a NASA astronaut!

However we rode the ride the week it opened, I hear they have calmed it down since then!

How long ago did they calm it down? I have been too scared to ride it following the incidents - but perhaps would give it a go if they have changed it in response to those cases???

I think it was changed a few times after it opened (when we rode it it did not contain sick bags, it does now!!). I think it was toned down in 2004/5. We rode it the week it opened in Aug 2003.

Brave you Gemma!! I think we're going to stick with the green side!!

I think I must have an iron-clad stomach, I felt dizzy afterwards but not sick at all... My bf felt a bit queasy but was fine after a sit down :) I'd give the orange side a try, it's fun! ;)

When I last went to WDW they didn't even have a "tame" version of it! We (5 of us) were all fine after it, even my parents!

My mum would probably even say it was the best thing she went on at WDW. I really don't understand what all the fuss is about :confused3 But then I don't get sick on rides.

You don't get any sense of spinning; just g-force pushing you back into your seat as you 'launch'. This is only the 1st part of the ride anyway-once you land on Mars you're fine!

I've ridden at least 8 times and it doesn't make me feel sick. You can't get me on teacups for love nor money! I don't get travel sick ( can't read in a car though that does makes me feel bad). As the ride advises just keep looking forward at screen.

Give it a go and see what you think-I wouldn't reccommend for any-one that has claustophobia though (think that's how you spell it)

Nor me to an extent. I have ridden it a few times and have never felt anything but fine afterwards. I do think though that if you don't follow the guidlines of looking straight at the front screen then you have a good chance of feeling queasy!

I don know people who have said that they have felt a bit queasy after the ride though, I would guess that it's better not to ride at all if you thought you would be sick, I can't imagine that would be very nice for the other 3 guest in your "shuttle"

I am a very travel sick person - boats, planes and cars do it for me!

However, I have had no problems with Mission Space:

1. It isn't prolonged so my sickness has insufficient time to build!

2. You are concentrating on the ride and the buttons so your mind isn't on your stomach.

3. There is a lovely cool breeze blowing which helps prevent nausea.

I would say give it a go. Sucking a mint afterwards is supposed to help the sensation too - so have some ready!!

Best wishes.

I honestly dont relise any differnet apart from may be the non spin is normaly a walk on and spin has always been at least 20 mins in what i have seen the only feeling i had when i went on last time i felt real pressure on my head like when you go too deep in the water not nice

Id be interested to know what they did to calm it down? We rode when it first opened and loved it! We go on it several times a visit and still love it - personally havent noticed the changed they made!

My nan went on with us and she felt ill afterwards - but saying that she kept turning her head round to look at us which it tells you not to do :)

To be honest though rides and travel have never made me feel ill so i cant really advise.

I do wonder if there is a bit of a psychological element with this in view of the ride's reputation? I rode the orange spinning side and did feel odd for a couple of hours afterwards but it didn't spoil my day. I thought the ride was incredible but am unsure if I would do it again.

I think you have got it in one!! :thumbsup2

I am fully aware that the person (or was it two people:confused3) that died had underlying medical conditions - but I am one of those that am always thinking - 'how do you know you have something underlying until something happens!!:scared1:' - not a very optimistic outlook I know and one that I MUST keep in check with the children:headache:, but I think perhaps the non-spinning version will have to be the way to go for me, as I know I won't enjoy the ride when I have this going on in my head!! - damn you head!!!:lmao:

Just to add to what others have said. I rode the "Intense version" (in fact there was only one version when I rode) and loved it. Howevere though I didn't feel sick, I did feel "off" for several hours after and any motion sickness enducing Rides felt insensified (a circle vision theater nearly wiped me out and they usually don't effect me). If you've never done it I'd recommend it but for me it has minimal repeat value.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with the psychology bit.

Now I've never had a problem on this ride - ridden it tens of times with no ill effects at all, even though I'm not exactly a daredevil when it comes to thrill rides normally - and so I really disliked this idea that they've "toned down" the ride. Sorry, but it's called Mission:Space for a reason, it's not Mission:TenFootOffTheGround!

So with some time to spare when I was waiting for DW to come out of a shop at Epcot once, I got talking to an M:S cast member about it. They assured me that the intense version had never been altered since the opening day apart from the adding of the sick bags (note that this conversation happened BEFORE they added the Green version of the ride).

However, these rumours persisted because Disney weren't going out and explicity denying them. And she thought the reason for that was because ever since the rumours started, more people had begun to ride and less people were complaining about being sick. It was almost as though people were going on it BECAUSE they thought it was less intense and so were happier about it and less worried that they would get sick - therefore they didn't get sick!

Maybe it's true, maybe it's not. But I rode it the first time not long after it opened (first month I think) and I haven't noticed any difference in any subsequent rides. And I still love it.
