Mission Space-how bad is it?

I loved MS but DH almost lost his cookies. He felt very clammy after the ride and needed to splash water on his face in the restroom (which he advised was full of clammy pasty men throwing up LOL). DH had problems before on Startours and I think it is a good gauge - if you have no issue with ST then MS will probably be great (was for me) but if you feel a bit queasy on ST then MS is probably not for you.

PS - our server at Le Cellier told us that if you look at a certain patch of concrete outside of MS you will notice it is slightly discoloured - from all the people throwing up on it. :scared1:

I hardly ever get sick from anything but I got so sick on ms that I really couldn't talk. I closed my eyes and held on but it was horrible. It wasn't just nausea but a weird dizzy, disorientation sick feeling that I never want to feel again. It was a neat ride but if I had known I would be sick for an hour I never would have tried it.

I was the most nervous about this ride of any that I've ever been on due to all the reports I read before I went. I love all thrill rides, and I've ridden everything I've ever come across without getting sick, but I do get carsick on road trips very easily. I think this is one ride that it's hard to predict how you'll react to it. I was absolutely fine and I loved the ride, but I was very paranoid about keeping my eyes and head straight ahead, and never looking away from the screen. My DH hates all thrill rides, but he did ride this. He liked it less than I did - he said he started to feel weird in the last few minutes of the ride, but it was nothing that was very bad and it did not affect his enjoyment of the rest of the day. He did not want to ride it again because of how he felt at the end, but I would have been more than happy to ride it again.

I had no problem with this ride, neither did my DD then 5. My DH said it was pushing his limits. Have fun. :wave2:

I can no longer ride star tours since I felt queasy after riding it last year. I love MS though, however I do agree that if you take your eyes off the screen, be prepared to feel a bit off, or worse. I think it has something to do with tricking your body into thinking it's not spinning around to create the liftoff and weightless sensations. Of course I looked all around, out the side of the car, etc and I felt it for a few hours, not too bad mind you. If I pay attention to the screen I can go 2-3 times in a row with no problems.

I'm not sure there is a great way to gauge whether you will do okay on this ride. If you don't mind the possibility of feeling ill for a little while go for it and you might be surprised.

I'm a big sissy when it comes to thrill rides, and I LOVED MS. If you're claustraphobic, NO DOT ride it. It's tight in there. If you face forward, and when you get freaked out try and REMEMBER it's ONLY A RIDE, you'll be fine. I thought it was really cool.

I didn't care for this ride. I mean, the theming is great, and the concept is great, and I wasn't scared or anything. It just made me nauseous, even though I very carefully looked straight ahead and did all that other stuff. It was all I could do to keep from heaving. Which is not my idea of fun anywhere :teeth: .

That's OK, though - one less line to wait on, I say  !

Hi! I highly recommend doing Mission Space. I don't usually like the intense rides... but I'm glad I did Mission Space... once! It was an unbelievable experience. It is definitely spinning, but I didn't think it was too bumpy. My DH who HATES StarWars and got super sick on the Body Wars ride in the Wonders of Life Pavillion (also at Epcot), did ok on Mission Space. He enjoyed it... but like me he says it's a 'once in a lifetime' ride. Now our son who was 8 on our last two visits LOVES it! So we all stand in line... he does the ride, we "chicken out" and go wait for him in the post ride area... which has lots to do. We alway end up staying there longer than we plan to.
GO FOR IT!!

I am a wimp and I LOVED Mission Space. I will add that in addition to keeping your eyes on the screen and not turning your head, NEVER close your eyes. When you do that, you will feel the spin and that is bad. The whole thing is tricking your brain into thinking you are moving as the screen indicates and that you are NOT spinning in a circle very fast.

Now I did have a little light headedness afterwards when my brain realized it had been tricked. I sat down, got a croissant and took it easy. I was a bit off later in the day (which was fixed with a bicarb) but I can't say if that was the fault of Mission Space or just of hitting the wall since we were at the end of our trip.

Also, this is not a male vs. female body thing. Female bodies can handle g forces very well. Our center of gravity is lower and we actually are built with a higher resistance to stress and pain as we birth babies and men do not. Males tend to have more physical strength we compensate with bodies built to handle more things.

So ladies, you are out of excuses. Just give it a whirl (so to speak), it really is a ride you should experience at least once.

Anyone else get a sore neck afterwards?

I rode it in March with my family, including a 5.5 yr old nephew (his older sibs chickened out). It's very tight in there and dark so claustrophobia may be a problem. I'm not claustrophobic, but was concerned about leg room for my arthritic knees. I had plenty of room to spare.

When you take off you feel your body recline backwards then all those G forces pushing against your face. If you're prone to lightheadedness that may be a problem. I had to remind myself to breath, slow and measured. And I also looked around for a bit... not a good idea as you tend to get disorientated. So keeping my eyes on the windowscreen, breathing normally, all I came away with was a bit of a sore neck. But I think that was because I have arthritis in my neck and had to kee my head tilted up and straight the entire time.

I had a full stomach as well since I just came out of the Princess breakfast. I never got queazy.

Honestly, what I imagined it would be was far worse than it was. If yu can handle one of those swinging boat rides you can probably do Mission Space without problem.

OK, be honest. How scary is it? I can do space mountain fine but the idea of feeling totally weightless and all of that, plus getting shaken like crazy..anyone here unsure at first then love it? My DBF really wants me to ride it with him, last year i chickened out at the last "warning" sign ..so embarrassing...

Hi,

I ride everything else at WDW but I will not ride Mission Space again. I have ridden this twice and while I did not get physically ill I felt "off" for the rest of the day. I did not like the presure I felt on my chest.

My husband on the other hand. Looks forward to riding Mission Space and has ridden it many times and has no ill effects and does not feel the presure that I feel.

If you have ever been on the Gravitron (where you stick to the wall and the floor drops out) at a local amusement park, you have a good idea of the basic movement and feeling on M:S. The main differences are that you are sitting instead of standing, there is an interactive story going on, and the intensity of the spinning starts and stops. I love the ride and went on it twice in a row on my last trip, but then again I love spinning rides. The only thing I have ever experienced was a heavy feeling in my legs, but that stopped immediately after the ride stopped.
Unless you have health problems or suffere from severe motion sickeness, I say give it a shot. I am a chicken on roller coasters and have stayed away from things before simply because I am scared of the unknown. I finally rode Space Mountain for the first time and loved it - but I thought I might lose it in the queue line from nerves. Take a deep breath and try it. If you hate it, it is only a few minutes of your life. And who knows - you may like it!

Have fun!

Kat
