Mission:Space Guest Previews

That's fantastic news!! I hope the word gets out for everyone planning on visting from now until the official preview.

it's not a preview. Disney needs "guinea pigs" to test the attraction on, as well as to continue fine tuning it. They need to get the ride up to 100% by Aug 15.. right now it stands at 50%

I don't think guests will care what it is called, or what you call them, so long as some of them are getting on. It is cool that guests, even if in small numbers, will begin to get on.

There's no mention of this being a preview pr surfer, other than the fact that cast member previews occured last week. I imagine this would be considered a soft opening if anything, but whatever they're calling it is really not the issue. The capacity issues you bring up not withstanding, it's still well worth it for guests to stop by the attraction if they happen to be in the park during these test runs. The worse that can happen is that they're turned away. You can always check back later on or try again another day. What's even more re-assuring is the fact that so far testing has proceeded without any major hitches. And open testing was not supposed to begin until the end of the month, so apparantly things continue to progress well. In other words, there's seems to be a good chance that guests will get to ride when you factor in the progress thus far, plus the fact that most guests in the park won't know that they're testing with live guests. Fortunately these boards, and others like it, help to get the word out to what amounts to be a rather small knit community. Taking all that into account, I would take my chances, which at this point look pretty good, even if it's only running at 50% capacity.

I rode it about 2 hours ago.
One word...

This was the highlight of my trip!
:)

I'm gonna try to swing by there on thursday... hopefully they'll need some more guinea pigs. I'm surprised they let you get a shot of the space suits though.... I was told I couldn't take shots of anything after the queue

That's awesome Dave. Please tell us more. I'm looking forward to your follow-up when you return. Have a great trip.

Luis

pr surfer, you rode during CM previews, correct? I'm pretty sure Dave rode as a guest, so wouldn't photo restrictions be lifted when actual guests are allowed to ride? (other than any permanent restrictions of course)

Or maybe Dave is even more sneaky than we all thought...;)

Way to go Dave!!!

Tell us how you made it, were you picked out or did you hunt someone down and ask?

Also, I get queezy on body wars and star tours, do you think I would be able to ride or do you think it will be to much for me?

PS and thanks for the photos, what a bonus!!!!!

And now, the rest of the story...
We were at MK and TennVolTony called me about 3:00. He told us we should high-tail it over to Epcot because there had been guest previews of M:S the day before at 4:00. We got out as quick as we could and hopped on the monorail.
As we passed through Epcot on the monorail, we could see that the wall of trees that had blocked entrance to the M:S building during previous days had been removed and the only thing blocking entrance to the building was a wall about four feet high. We entered Epcot and headed straight for M:S. There were about ten people standing around the wall when we got there and we quickly learned that they had the same information that we did. We could see several cast members in uniforms and LOTS of managers milling around the entrance. We could also see the video monitors going and hear the music and sound. All very good signs...
We waited for about 20 minutes and at 4:00, several managers came out and one of them asked us if we were waiting for anything particular (with a big grin on his face!) He said it was our lucky day and opened the gate. By this time the group of guests had grown to about 50 and we all followed the managers into the building and through the queue. They walked very slowly and we marveled at the detail of the queue area. My wife took pictures (she didn't even have to be sneaky :) ).
The preshow consists of Gary Sinise and an unknown (to me anyway) actress describing what our mission would consist of. On several occasions during the preshow, the chance to opt out was given. Guests were divided into groups of four and each member of the group has a different job in the mission. Gary described each job and acted as the voice of mission control during the ride.
We were ushered into our pods which have four seats each. I was the navigator, my wife was the pilot, and two other guest were the engineer and commander. At a particular point in the mission, each member has to press a button on command.
The pods are a bit tight so if you're claustrophobic, you might want to pass on this attraction. They have over the shoulder harnesses.
After we were strapped in, the pod rotated us so that we were on our backs looking up at the sky and the top of the launch tower. The blast off was amazing! You can actually feel your face flatten out from the G's! You leave earth's atmosphere and head toward the moon. You fire your rockets while over the moon's surface and slingshot around it to head for Mars. There is another good dose of G's as you slingshot around the moon and then you are put into "hypersleep" until you arrive at Mars. Something has gone wrong (surprise, surprise) and you have to help steer the ship to a rather bumpy landing on the surface.
This is just a basic description, partly because I don't want to completely spoil the surprise and partly because it's unlike any attraction I've ever experienced.
The post show area is very good and has several interactive displays and games. As usual, you end up in a store (where we promptly bought $50.00 worth of tshirts and pins). There were many managers there and we were asked several times if we felt sick. We didn't, but I understand several people did.
We're going back tomorrow with TennVolTony to see if we can ride again. I have a feeling they're going to do this every day this week so we're going to take advantage of it while we can.
This attraction is going to be very popular. It's Disney through and through and the themeing is unbelievable! As you can tell from my username, I loved Horizons and have been waiting to see if M:S is a suitable substitue. I have to say that it definately is and far exceeded my expectations.
That's all for now, I'm full of pork chops from Big River and need some sleep!

I took a vacation day today and joined Dave and Jill at MGM at 9 this morning. We had a bite of breakfast and Jill and I headed to Tower of Terror....Then the 3 of us hit RNR, Movie Ride (time for this attraction to go) and Millionaire before heading to Epcot.

We got to Epcot around 3 and sorta just milled around near M:S.
About 3:45 we decided to go stand by the wall. In no time there were about 75 people behind us! We told them we were just standing there talking and trading pins......why were they all BEHIND us?? :p

Shortly after 4 they opened the ride again!! Man was I stoked!!

Incredible is not the word!! We managed 2 rides today and I'm here to tell ya that I was wiped out after the 2nd ride!!

It is amazing!!

Spending time with my buddy HorizonsFan and his beautiful bride DisChick and being able to be "crash dummies" for M:S was awesome!! See ya guys in November!!

It's been a great trip!
The highlights have been Mission: Space and playing golf at Falcon's Fire with Tony and friends.
Good times with great people at my favorite place. What could be better than that?
M:S gets better each time I ride. I've been three times now and the mild queasy feeling I had yesterday did not return today. I don't know if that has to do with getting used to the ride or the fact that I wasn't full of pork loin from Crystal Palace today...

These reviews are really making me wish I was going down much sooner than Oct! Can't wait!!!!!!!

Thanks!
