Hi all,

First-time trip to Disney for my 2 boys - 5 and 8 years old on May 7. The younger one is very leery of intense rides but LOVES anything related to space. How intense is this ride, really? I'm reading very different things. Also, what's the motion-sickness rating for this one? DH is susceptible.

Thanks!!
Rachel

Missions Space is VERY intense and the puke factor is high for anyone with motion sickness. Also, a 4 YO boy died last year after riding it. That scared me right there,

My daughter is almost 5. She went on it in December and again this past week. She really likes it. I am sure to tell her to keep her eyes forward and not to look around. They advise you of this before getting on. I was chaperoning a group of middle school kids. One of the girls was feeling sick after getting off and had to take a short nap before she felt better. They have barf bags on the ride just in case. It is very intense.

My daughter has been riding it since she was 4 and likes it well enough. Still, it is one of the most intense rides on property, and has a higher risk of motion sickness than any of the others (which can be minimized by following the instructions, but some people still get sick).

I, personally, have never been on it, but my husband has, and he loved it. I think it may depend on the child and their sense of adventure, which might be hard to gauge for a 5 yr. old. The only bad thing is, you never know how they will react, until they are on it. Some may love it and some may freak. I have claustrophobia and a touch of motion sickness and wouldn't dream of going on it, but I'm a wuss, so take that with a grain of salt. :)

My youngest son is alot like me and always has been and isn't fond of coasters or intense rides. My oldest son would love it probably. If he is leary of intense rides, you might want to wait until he is a little older. Has he been to Kennedy Space Center? He would probably love that.

Personally, I've found this ride to be far less intense than either ToT or RnRC. My then 5 YO would not ride this, but then she rode RnRC and Test Track on the same trip, in short order. I know she can handle it, but I didn't want to cause a scene so I left it alone. She also loves the teacups, which is essentially the same experience as M:S (if you decide to spin your cups as fast as I like to). Go figure. The teacups may be a good way to experiment with your 5 YO. Ride it and have him spin the car as fast as he wants. If he spins pretty fast, then he probably would enjoy M:S. Just MHO.

Unfortunately, that boy who died after riding M:S had a preexisting heart condition and probably would have died after riding just about anything.

My DS was 4 and also crazy about space and he LOVED it. We are planning a trip in June and that is nearly all he can talk about. He was very leery the first time he rode it, but we told him that it was very important that he completed his tasks while on the ride and he did everything he was supposed to. He came away not only enjoying the ride but really believing he had accomplished something by helping to fly the space craft. Definitely give this ride a shot!

We actually thought the ride was pretty tame. I know most people will disagree. We went into it expecting it to be pretty insane-a close family friend and former Marine had gone on it, and came back to tell us it was worse than anything he'd experienced ever! So needless to say, I was quite a bit freaked before riding. After it was over I was shocked! It was nothing! An AWESOME ride, but not anywhere near as intense as I was expecting. After recalling our experience, the Marine's response was "They must have toned it down"!!!!!! Go figure. But I would say that to a 5 yo child, it could be considered VERY intense.

My 5yr old son went on this in fact it was the source of the pretrip stress we weren't sure he would make the height! No problems and he liked it. It is a different kind of motion. I can't go on the Teacups at all ! I get sick watching them, was barely able to look long enough to take a picture of the kids on them.
I had no problem with space, not sick a bit,and I looked sideways to see how the 5yr old was doing-he was laughing actually. I went on it twice in the same day no problems. But you can't pay me to go on tilt a whirl.

You are in a seat and there is no movement of your body like on the other rides it is very smooth. I'd ask your child and go from there but the could get sick on the tea cups and be fine on space.

I'm also claustrophobic and get motion sick so there is no way in he$%^ I would go on this but DH took DS6 on it 3 times and they loved it! DH did say that when he looked over at DS, he (DH) started to get a little motion sick but when he looked straight ahead, he was fine.

Have fun!

You could take him thru the queue and let him enjoy the design of the ride and even the pre-show. If he (or you or both) decides he doesn't want to ride, then he can pass thru to the chicken exit. That way he can enjoy the space stuff but doesn't get too worked up.

If he then decides he wants to ride after hearing about it from you and your DS8, rock on.

I'm trying to decide to take my little guy on it or not....he asked last visit, but I told him he wasn't ready yet. He is 5 1/2 now, and just completed his first year in wrestling, so if he can wrestle for 3min in front of hundreds of people, then I'm thinking he may be ready for MS.

Also, I CANNOT STAND the tea cups, but MS gives me no problems at all.....in fact I love it, so the motion is a little different feel than the tea cups..

Personally... I hated it! hate, hate, hate, hate... did I say I hated it... :headache: I was sick after the ride and will NOT EVER ride that again. On the other hand my DS 9 and DS 7 at the time LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I was uneasy for them to ride it in the beginning because of the death of the 4 years old. But they loved anything about space so I let them and they don't have problem with motion sickness at all so I let them tagging along mom and dad just to be sure... My DSs didn't like Epcot at all, they were bored and the walking just killed them but when I mention Mission Space they would gladly go to Epcot again for that ride alone... :confused3 :confused3 ..

My 6 year old son loved it and it was his number 1 ride....

It depends on the kid, just don't force them if they don't want to go on it...

I LOVE roller coasters and the Tea Cups, but Mission Space did me in. My Marine husband enjoying making fun of me. He is a pilot, so it is just like a day in the simulator to him. I didn't get physically ill, but lost all color in my face, cold sweats, and wanted to pass out.

I will leave my DD8 riding up to her. He will be riding with her though, not me. Once was more than enough.

My 6-year old didn't care for it, and she loves all things space-related. She is not afraid of thrill rides and loves ToT, Test Track, and all the rollercoasters. My DH was the one who was green when he got off it, though! He refused to go again, but no one else wanted to ride it again anyway! I don't think it was the scariness factor for my 6-year old. I think the motion bothered her and she didn't know quite how to express it. She loves the Tea Cups, which actually do make my DH throw up!

Oh yeah when they said "dont' close your eyes" Yes, don't close your eyes! it made me sicker! and while getting sick watching our kids just laughing like theres no tomorrow. They said its their #1 ride too. Mom and Dad? no!

It is too intense for a 5 yr old. My 7 yr old rode it 2 times last year but there is a big difference in maturity from a 5 yr old to a 7 yr old. I would let your 8 yr old try it but not your youngest. Also, you should ride it first so you can judge from your own experience. Every child is different and maybe after riding it you would never want your 8 yr old on it.

As for the motion sickness rating....I can't do the teacups or even astro orbitor, but following all the head back, eyes open and looking forward at all times rules I was fine. I went three times in a row on it. My mom though did it once and didn't feel so great so it's hard to say who will be affected by it.
