Mission: SPACE at Epcot Set to Open August 15, 2003

The excitement, the thrill and the rush of rocketing into outer space is coming soon to Walt Disney World® Resort. Beginning Aug. 15, 2003, Mission: SPACE, presented by HP -- the next awesome adventure at Epcot® -- will send guests on an out-of-this-world journey they never thought possible.

Guests who accept the mission will engage in a one-of-a-kind astronaut experience that launches them into a simulated space adventure – from pulse-racing liftoff to the sensations of traveling though outer space on a mission to Mars.

The new attraction is the most technologically advanced ever created by Disney. In association with former NASA advisors, astronauts and scientists, Walt Disney Imagineering developed Mission: SPACE as the first ride system ever created to take guests straight up in simulated flight.

Pre-Show
The setting for the attraction is several decades into the future at the International Space Training Center. As the "crew" selected for this ultimate space mission, guests head to the dispatch area and then move to the Ready Room where they receive a history of astronaut training and are given the role they will assume during the mission -- as the commander, pilot, navigator or engineer.

Countdown…Liftoff
Then it's on to the pre-flight corridor to load into the spacecraft, receive final briefings from CapCom and buckle in for liftoff. When the countdown reaches zero, the most unique and exhilarating ride experience ever begins. The earth begins to rumble, white clouds of exhaust start to stir as the ascent toward the sky starts and guests are rocketed into the galaxies. Guests hear from CapCom and are asked to perform vital tasks that will land their spacecraft safely on Mars. Each guest will assume the role of Commander, Pilot, Navigator or Engineer. But there is no mission without surprise as guests encounter unexpected twists, turns and other challenges that test every astronaut. Quick thinking and fast reactions are needed by each guest to successfully complete the mission.

Post Show
Training is not complete when the capsule lands. Guests can proceed to the Mission: SPACE Post Show, powered by HP. In this Advanced Training Lab, guests of all ages have an opportunity to explore interactive space experiences, which include:

Space Race -- Two teams compete against each other in a race to send their rocket from Mars back to Earth. Nearly 60 people can play the high-energy game at one time.
Space Base -- For junior astronauts, Space Base provides a fun, interactive crawl space for exploration.
Expedition: Mars -- A joystick and a jet pack button help guests explore the surface of Mars.
Postcards from Space -- Guests can e-mail a video of themselves with one of the space-themed backgrounds and create a great souvenir of their Mission: SPACE experience. How cool!!!
Walt Disney World Resort Announces Dec. 14 Opening Date for Disney's Pop Century Resort
We are beginning to book reservations for Disney’s newest value-priced resort - Disney’s Pop Century Resort. Opening Dec. 14, 2003, the 2,880-room, first phase of Disney’s Pop Century Resort will send guests on a trip through American popular culture spanning the 20th Century.

The whimsical resort will feature two phases - the Legendary Years of the 1900s-1940s and the Classic Years of the 1950s-1990s. Larger-than-life icons such as the Big Wheel, bowling pins, the Rubik’s Cube, cell phones and more will tower near individual lodge buildings. Famous dance moves from each decade will be immortalized on each building by giant, two-dimensional images of silhouetted couples. Memorable slogans such as "Boogie down" and "Have a nice day" will line the rooftops.

Located near Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex, Disney’s Pop Century Resort will include two 5,000-square-foot arcades; Disney’s first integrated food, beverage and shopping area; eight courtyards; six pools in wildly-fun shapes; two playgrounds; and recreational paths for riding surrey bikes around Hourglass Lake.

After completion, Disney’s Pop Century Resort will join Disney’s All-Star Resorts in offering a combined total of more than 11,500 rooms in the value category, priced from $77-$109 per room, per night.

looks like we'll just HAVE to go back too do mission Space and stay in Pop Century then............:) ;)

The news I was dreading...........

I realised that we'd probably be too early for the unveiling of Mission Space (June 19) but at least this has now put me out of my misery (so to speak).

I hope everybody who goes on it this year really enjoys it, it sounds like a fantastic experience.

Alas for me, it will have to wait until next year:(

Cool - like the sound of the new attraction, Tim. Hope it's got over it's teething problems by the time we arrive, quite fancy having a go on that one:D

Shame Pop Century doesn't open until after we go, would have liked a little peek around. Never mind, there's always the next trip . . . .:p

Great news. Can't wait to try Mission Space:D

We saw Pop Century in progress last year, shame we will miss the opening date - I would have liked a closer peak ;)

Fingers crossed for mission space that all goes to plan as we arrive 14/8/.

Can't wait sounds great.

Great news!!!!!!!!!!!!

We fly out on the 15th so that's handy...let's hope it is not as fault prone as test track was.

Just in time for your trip Tim, and hopefully mine (still in the dark). Maybe this will convince Loraine to alter her plans and stay a little longer. :p

Please note that the August date is for soft-openingonly. As I undersand it, the official opening won't be until October. With soft openings there is no guarantee that the ride will be open all day or every day. This time between soft and official opeing is to set up the new attraction, make sure everything works properly under normal operations with guests, make sure staff know what's what, etc, etc.

Regards

Rob

Brilliant, we're there in August, I hope it's running on one of the days we go to Epcot. I still haven't tried Test track, the one and only time we didn't have the kids with us (age 3 and 4 now) it was broken! Lets hope mission space is more reliable in its early life...
