MISSION:Implausible

Ok. So can anyone out there guess why I chose February for this trip?

Low attendance?? Nope, actually January is less crowded.

It's cheaper? Nope, the week we're going is the same price as January.
Ok... I'll give you a hint:

1. Redneck Christmas

Still don't get it?? Ok....

2. We are a low income family.

No lightbulbs yet? Ok.. last hint

3. Although flight, lodging, tickets and dining are all paid for... what kinna nutjob would head to WDW for 7 days with $200 and no credit card?

Still don't get it?

Well.. I planned the trip for the first week of Feb b/c it's time for all da po' folks to get their TAX REFUND!! That's right... the first week of Feb is

The poor man's Christmas!

Usually our tax refund is sizeable. Umm, we get more money from our refund than we actually make in 2 months. :cool1:

Usually, we blow it on trivial things like car repairs, medical bills, new (needed-not "extra") clothes for the boys, and usually a small savings bond for each of them. Every other year I get a new pair of glasses. This year we also paid my mother's house taxes. Then POOF! it's gone like so much dust in the wind.
All that money just pooh-pooh'd away with nothing to show for it :confused3 (other than healthy bodies and cars that actually run).

Well. Given the extraordinary opportunity we were faced with, we decided to spend our tax refund on something worthwhile. Something that we will have forever, and benefit from for years to come.

We decided to sprinkle some Pixie Dust of our own on our vacation.:tinker:

After we check out of Animal Kingdom Lodge on Feb 9th, we are heading over to

:dance3: UNIVERSAL ORLANDO & SEA WORLD!!:dance3:

Irresponsible? Yup. :headache:
Foolhardy? Absolutely. :rolleyes1
Do we care? Not at all. :cheer2:

I know we shouldn't do it... but if we are ever in Orlando again, I KNOW it won't be until the boys are MUCH older, at least late teens.
"WHY?" you say?

1)As my mother's disorder progresses, I won't be able to leave her alone for 2 weeks.

2)And, of course, the cost of a vacation like this not in our future financially, for a loonngg time..

3)Also, with me starting school next year, vacations will be out.

4)Every trip we could actually be able to take would be to Atlanta, to see my fairy grandmother :wizard:

YEA!! So.. back to our itenEARary!!

Now, this part of the plan is kind of optional. We have discussed also going to Busch Gardens, Gatorland & the Kennedy Space Center. We are budgeting $3,000 for the whole trip (spending $ at WDW & all lodging and attraction tickets, dining, etc after WDW). So we will do whatever the budget allows.:thumbsup2

The whole after WDW portion of the trip is a SUPRISE for Ashe & Rowan. They are science and nature FANATICS with a room full of lions, killer whales, books & inventions they have made. They have always dreamed of going to Sea World, not Disney!

They will go NUTSO over Sea World & the Space Center.

We are going to rent a car upon departing WDW to get us around on our grand adventure. DH has already told his boss that we'll be gone for 2 whole weeks:cloud9: .

I AM SO EXCITED!!:goodvibes :cool1: :thumbsup2 :) :rotfl:   :cloud9: :woohoo: :cheer2:

The Poor Man's Christmas, I love it!!

I am right there with ya...

That is how we pay for our disney trips:cool1:

People say, why not ust open a savings acct, well because then the money is too easy to get a hold of and spend.

With your refund, the money taken out of your pay each check, gets put it away and there is NO way you can touch it and I love that:thumbsup2

WOOHOO!!!

For Universal and Sea World!!!!

Is that part of the trip a surprise for the kids??

That would be sweet!!!

Your kids would be so excited:thumbsup2

Although I'm tempted to comment on tax refunds as a savings plan, I won't. This is not the forum for that. :rolleyes1
Since you haven't taken a vacation before and you don't expect to have another one in quite awhile. Have Fun and Enjoy every minute of it! :dance3: :cheer2:
Your boys will love Universal and Seaworld.

:lmao:
OMG!! I wonder wich is better, the tax return savings plan or the change bucket savings plan!!
:lmao: :lmao: :rotfl:

Truth be told, I like it this way! Every time we manage to save up money, we end up using it for car repairs or trips to the doctor. Last November, all 4 of us got strep throat. The doctor & medications ended up being over $700!!:scared1:

That's alot more than we make in a WEEK!! Such is the life of the uninsured! Make to much for medicaid, but not enough to afford our own insurance. :sad2:

At tax time we get back 100% of what we paid in (we have 0 taxable income) PLUS Earned Income Credit. So that is the one time of the year that we can pay for the things we have been putting off such as dental visits, minor car repairs, and apparently vacations!:lmao:

And THAT, everyone, is why I am going to college next year! :woohoo:

With ya on tax refund and change bucket...:cool1:

Just out of curiousity, what do you both do that is 0 taxable income?

Just wondering and nosey:rotfl2:

With ya on tax refund and change bucket...:cool1:

Just wondering and nosey:rotfl2:

0 taxable income means that after you factor in all of our dependants, that we do not have to pay any taxes, and they return everything that was paid in that year, plus EIC.

DH is a (somewhat glorified) contruction worker. He runs a crew for a custom trim company. The do round staircases, windows, etc.. Basically, if no one else can do the job, they call the company he works for.

I make cakes out of my house. I am self taught, and have been doing cakes for 8 years. Unfortunatly I don't make that much here in Myrtle Beach. When we lived in Atlanta, there were weeks that I made more than DH! But this is a low income area, and no one will pay $75 for a birthday cake. I find myself having to match Wal Mart prices, and with ingredients getting more expensive by the week, I am making less and less profit. I USUALLY make more than I would working at a gas station or a grocery store part time, tho! I could make more $$ at a full time job somewhere else, but we decided when the boys were born never to put them in daycare, so a 9 to 5'ers out for now. I am going to start school next Fall (only going when the boys are in school, too). By the time I graduate they will be old enough to stay at home with my Mom by themselves after school. We just gotta hang in there until then!

We support 5 people (DH,me, the twins, and my mother) on peanuts.

My grandmother is always saying "You need to save money!". So one day while we were visiting, I sat down and wrote out our budget for her. After mortgage, insurance, utilities, phone, cable, internet, gas & $150 a week for groceries (for 5 people!), we were actually at, like, NEGATIVE $10 :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I mean, honestly, we could get rid of the internet and cable, but that is like, the ONLY thing we do for ourselves!!

We are just low income. But not quite enough low income to qualify for any public assistance. I don't want food stamps or welfare, but medical insurance would be a godsend. I only go to the doctor when I KNOW I need an antibiotic. I usually diagnose myself and DH, and treat with items from the health food store (grapefruit seed extract is a powerful natural antibiotic that you can use for minor things).

When the boys get sick, I usually wait a day or two, b/c if it's a virus, they can't do anything anyway. Of course, when you do that, the sore throat might NOT be a cold or the flu, then ya ALL end up with strep and a $700 doctor & med bill! :sad2: (part of that is b/c 3 of us are allergic to penecillin, and lemme tell ya, Z-Pacs are expen$ive!!

Ok, I'll bite...

1.) c. 10 days is the perfect amount of days because it gives you the freedom of coming and going anf enough tome to tweek your touring plans once you arrive if needed.

2.) c. AWESOME! If you like to eat that way. We have considered it many times but have yet to take advantage of it because I don't know that we would like to be tied down to the ADR three times a day and I know that we would not feel like we got our money's worth if we didn't...so while I keep trying to talk myself into getting it (and let me tell you the deluxe dining plan was real tempting!) we have yet to experience it...

3.) b. mid-visit...we have been to the Halloween party and the Christmas party many times and we always go for the weekday party because the weekends tend to be more crowded with locals.

4.) d. use both...we always try to get to the park that has evening EMH for that option of staying if we feel like it. We are usually not the people to arrive early...10am is our usual park arrival time. Having said that though...we did one day at Magic kindgom on July 2, 2007 and it was our first time being at a park at opening and I believe it was an EMH morning. If was awesome and we had Fantasyland almost to ourselves for the first hour and a half...so we may be trying to get to more of these in January...

5.) b. it can actually get warm enough to swim in February...the first time we went to the World with Tyler (now 8) he was 2 and we were there for a week and it was in the upper 90s everyday and we were sweating our butts off! My brother and girlfriend (at the time) went the following week and had to buy winter hats and gloves...

6.) c. who cares...We usually plan our days around the park schedule, especially when the hours are shortened for the off-season (if you can call it that!)...we don't worry so much about which park when because we want to hit them all!

7.) I'm torn between b and c...we never have and never will leave the park for the intention of a nap...first of all, that's a lot of travel time. Second of all, my kids (who are 8 and 3 now) would never nap once we got back to the hotel...there is too much going on.

8.) a. Disney transportation...when on vacation, that includes no driving for us...we don't want to have to figure out where we are going or waste time getting lost. And the kids love that there are no seat belts and they can actually have fun while driving. We use Disney transportation only...all the time!

9.) a.fun, convienent, and add to the trip...the dining at Disney is part of the fun for us we just don't like being stuck into dining (which is why we have not chosen the dining plan yet).

10.) I don't quite understand the choices here but I think as soon as the parents are able to take them...we started taking Tyler when he was 2 years old and Skye went for the first time when she was 2 months old...each trip is different. Now, if you are only ever going to get one Disney trip and not spend every free dollar on the mouse, 5-10 is probably the age group I'd say is perfect because they can most likely ride everything and they will remember it too.

11.) c. Eh...did it once and it is not for us. We do not like that kind of attention and while the food was ok, we did not think it was wonderful so we are in no hurry to go back...although I know many people love it!

12.) a. love it...you may not need to use fastpass but it never hurts.

We will be trying the first thirteen days of January for the first time. We are hoping for good weather and low crowds (at least after the first few days)...

I am enjoying reading along!

Sorry to hear about you gfather. Lost mine in about the same type of situation. Lost him in 1990, about 5 years after his stroke. It allowed Grama more time to get out and he was not stuck in this world any more. He used to love to get out and about all the time and was not able to do after the stroke. The family was relieved that he was not suffering any more..
God Bless you and your family.

You are an awsome writer. :thumbsup2 You should maybe look into writing for one of the disney guide books. Posibly move out of the low income(military) area that you are in and start getting what you deserve for those cakes that you are making. They are absolutely AMAZING. Posibly look in an area around,,,,,,,,central Florida, I am sure you could get more for those cakes their and your DH can still stay in the construction business.:dance3:
Not sure, just a suggestion????????? What ya think?:confused3

Keep up the great writing. Looking foward to more.
David

Thank You for your sympathy, and you have mine, as well. It's a difficult position you're put in with a situation like that, isn't it? Sad, but relieved at the same time.

Wow.. thank you. :flower3:

Reading your post made all warm and fuzzy :jumping1:

I love making cakes, and that you for the compliment. But I am kind of tired.. of the mess.. the late nights, and my Mondays being on Fridays. No fun stuff on the weekends, b/c that's when all your cakes are due. If I had a bakery, it wouldn't be so bad, but that's a hard biz to succeed in, and ESPECIALLY here.

I really enjoy writing, thought about going to school for that. I would LOVE being a travel writer, it would be soo much fun. Next year I am going to college. I want to pursue a career in something computer related (job security as long as you are creative), but would also like to study writing.

Maybe I could write about being a traveling computer tech :rotfl:

The funny thing is, DH jokes that we are going to fall so in love with WDW, that we are going to end up moving to FLA. :cutie: We have absolutely discussed moving out of state, (read:somewhere with $$$ to be had!)but the situation is complicated, and we agreed that we would wait until the boys are ready for middle school (2.5 years) before going anywhere. This is due largely in part to my mother's health, my love for their school, and the LARGE amount of family we have here.

Thank you sooooo much for giving me a smile :teeth: and the opportunity to talk about myself! :hyper2:

We're going to be staying in AKL savannah view bunk at the same time as you!!

Well, we get there two days later, but it's so cool to think when I'm walking around the Lodge and see a lady (any lady, every lady), I'll be thinking to myself, "Is that the crazy cake lady?"

Then again, you've got your days packed full with stuff to do, so you'll probably never be still enough for any of us to notice you. Think of a giant blur in a cartoonish, super hero jetting off to save the world kind of way, and that's my vision of you, LOL.

I, myself, have a mild Disney OCD, especially when it comes to planning. But...it must remain mild, because my DH is not the planning type. The last time we went, I started making plans. You know, like MK on this day, AK on that day, BB another day, so forth and so on, and you'd think the sky was falling on top of him. His approach is wake up and decide if you feel like visiting the World at Epcot, or are you in more of an animal mood today? It makes me bonkers!

We own our own seafood business (all you fish haters, BEWARE!), so we always rush into our tasks and schedules to get everything done, and DH is absolutely NOT going to have a schedule on vacation.

Makes it difficult for ADR's. Last time, he only let me make one (at CRT). This time, he's openning up a little more, so if I keep working on him, I might get to pick like 3 or 4 of my faves and make the ADR's.

So, anyway, point is, YOU LUCKY DUCK! You get to feed your Disney OCD while I have to sit here and read about all your plans, wishing I was planning too!
