This will be brief.
I haven't travelled since last year. In that time, airlines went from serving peanuts to nothing in the way of food. Didn't particularly care, since our flight is only 2.5 hrs (although airport to airport time is more like 5-6 hours) and I know enough to bring snacks.
However, on the way home, DS16 and ME49 had an opportunity to take a bump (yours odds improve if you travel the last workday before a major holiday or the last day of a major holiday weekend), so we were going to be getting home a couple of hours late. Feeling like we just earned $400 in tickets, I decided to splurge on 2 $10 meals prepared by or for (not sure) the Hard Rock cafe.
Got one turkey sandwich and one ceasar salad (they had good chips and cookie stuff, too), both quite good. WAY better than anything I ever had on an airplane before (except international flights). The boxes they came in had a coupon for $5 for Hard Rock merchandise (of no value to me, but my nephew collects HR shot glasses...) and a coupon for "buy one entree, get one free" at and Hard Rock Cafe - of which there are two within 10 minutes of my home.
I think this arrangement is much better than the former food service. This way, you pay for what you get, and you don't pay for what you don't want, instead of burying the cost in the price of a plane ticket.
I don't know what the other airlines are doing, but if you are flying US Air, and you're hungry, ask to see the lunches. Fair food, for a fair price (given that you are in an airplane).
