Who: Gang of 5 (DH47, DS16, DS14, DSF13, ME49)
What: Dinner at 'Ohana
When: Tuesday, June 22, 8:00 pm

Enough reading about this experience, I had to do it myself, even if it meant spending c-c-c-cash. My entire meal plan revolves around meal vouchers, eating in room (DVC) or dry cereal snacks. I have wanted to try Artist's Point and California Grill for years, but haven't included them yet - because they require c-c-c-cash!!

This year, my children are finally old enough and big enough to eat enough at an all-you-can-eat meal. I'd earned about $125 in Disney Visa Reward dollars and a friend send my $10 Disney Dollars for renting them DVC points. So, I wasn't REALLY spending c-c-c-cash....

I booked the PS for 8:00 pm so that we could watch Wishes from the restaurant. I requested a window, but they only do that at the podium, so I made a note on my spreadsheet to remember to ask.....

This was a surprise for the family, one of many this trip. DS14 had a clue, because I'd left a copy of the spreasheet with DSF's mom before their departure.

We arrived a bit early (around 7:40) and checked in - remembering the window request. We waited a little longer for the window seat, sitting down at 8:15, directly in line-sight with a large tree, all tree, nothing but tree. So much for Wishes from the restaurant! Wasn't even time for a Grrrr moment before Cousin Edward and Cousin Jackie Chan (Nick) showed up to introduce themselves. We went strictly with the all-you-can-eat menu (non-alcholic beverage included). The food was great. Notable standouts (as indicated by repeat requests) were the appetizer won-tons, shrimp and steak. Turkey and pork were also very good, but the team did not request too many hits of them.

I took a sample of the rice (OK), beans (quite good, but who wants 'em when you have the other stuff?) and salad (OK, but a bit limp), but beyond that, no one bothered with them. Boys all tried the wings (after all, we ARE from Buffalo), but even though they were tasty, no one felt compelled to request more.

Fresh pineapple with caramel dipping - excellent. DS14 and ME49 are both fresh pineapple hounds and this was the ultimate in dessert.

Ambience: Festive, fun. Tables are VERY close together. This place has nothing on Al Fredo's for ensuring that every available space has a patron crammed into it. It is also very noisy - but no body cares, because you already feel like you are at a party, not a restaurant. If I didn't know better, I'd think they were hustling to turn over the tables, everything happens so fast! Conversely, I would not recommend this for a romantic dinner unless you want the ambient noise of middle school gym class to provide a white noise back drop for whatever special event you have in mind.

Entertainment: A woman sings, not sure what, something tropical, I presume. She leads coconut races and the hula contest. My kids are too old to participate, although DS16 and DS14 were both very good with the hula back in the day. DS16 still has it. DS14 can't find his hula-groove, and being 14, doesn't want to look foolish while he hunts for it.

Summary:

Recommend? 'Ohana deserves all of the positive reports I have read. I would make this a "must do," at least once. If close tables and noise bother you, you might want to get a PS for an off time, if such a thing exists here.

Repeat? Definitely.

Post Script:

I did have a "Plan B" for viewing the fireworks. We made sure we left our table around 9:45 and headed to the PR beach to view Wishes (that review is elsewhere in the report).

We enjoyed Ohana's too!

Loved the pineapple and caramel.
