Missing "The Old Place"

If we didn't need a 2BR for our family, I don't think we would have purchased DVC. But now that we're in I don't anticipate selling even when our kids are gone. We'll probably use a GV for large family gatherings, hopefully with lots of grandkids, every other year or so and then stay at a non-DVC resort on cash otherwise.

I love DVC, but love to stay at Poly, too. I never stayed at CR so I'm gonna have to try that and AKL. I don't have a desire to stay at GF.

I'd have to say we do miss CBR. I think that's why we chose OKW to kind of keep with the theming. We loved the CBR food court and refillable mugs. The pool was always a hit and the store with Disney merchandise was well stocked.

We love staying in our GV at OKW, but we still drive over to CBR for the food court at least once or twice every trip.

Well for me.. my fav resort I've stayed in is WL, and staying at VWL is basically the same to me, so "no" I don't miss any of the others.

That said though.. I still haven't stayed in AKL which for atmosphere is my fav resort (we eat at Boma's almost every trip), so I do long for a trip there.. and it will happen one, but until then.. anything DVC makes me happy!

DH's favorite resorts are the BC/YC and BWI. We bought a BWV resale so I think we'll be pretty close. :) I think it's a little sad we can't stay at the POLY but, I would never pay that many points for it!

Another DVCer who pays cash on weekends--
We have stayed at WL and AKL with nice big AP discounts, which we wouldn't have without joining DVC. I think I will stay at MORE Disney resorts now that we own at DVC...Pop Century in two weeks at my daughter's request...

If we buy I can see doing the "cash on weekends thing" occasionally... we might overspend on points one year to bring someone, so so the next year we'd have to conserve by staying Sun-Thursday... it will give me a chance to eventually try the other resorts.

We always stay at either Coronado or at the All Stars on weekends we love thos places and really can't justify using points for weekends.

I think we'll always miss where we used to stay - the old villas/townhouses/treehouses at the Disney Institute. We loved them, we stayed there often from 1984 to 2000. When they left to make way for SSR, we bought into DVC (BWV, we weren't blown away by SSR). If they were still there, we'd still be staying in them.

Because WL was one of them. As was Dixie Landings. Here is a post I made this past visit to WDW

You never forget your first love.......

We like to stay at different resorts when we go to WDW. In Dec we always stay at VWL (that place was made for Christmas!) and then stay the weekend at either a Universal resort or another Disney resort. Well this year the prices for resorts at Univ were pretty steep so we decided to stay at Dixie Landings (POR-for the PC term). We always stayed there pre-DVC, but it has been 4 years since we were there. I fell in love with the place all over again. They have updated the rooms and they looked great. I love the theming. I am so glad we stayed there.

Weekends are a great time to visit the old favorites.

Okay, you beat me to this answer! :)

I can honestly say that if DVC didn't build at WL, we probably never would have bought into it....we love WL that much.

However, now that we have stayed at BWV a couple of times, and will be at OKW this summer, I am so glad we got past our "WL Snobbishness". :snooty:

I was just wondering if after buying into DVC if any members ever miss the old resort they stayed at?

We hadn't stayed at a non DVC resort since 1999 but did this past New Year's. We had to get it out of our system. It was a great trip and we had lots of fun. Now we can go a while longer until we HAVE to do it again.

As was suggested, renting points is a great way to pay for a non DVC stay but still using DVC points to pay for it. We rented out enough points for a cruise and had enough money left over to pay for a few more nights in a deluxe resort. Thank you DVC.

OK--now I'm feeling a little better. We just returned from a trip to BCV (our second) and I was missing the BC! How can that be, my DH asked? We're right at the same location. Well, I guess it's the fond memories I have of the BC from when my boys were younger. Nostalgia, I guess.

I also have the same sort of feeling about the CBR (our first WDW stay) and POR (when we needed the trundle bed). I should have known that other DVCer's would understand.

We always loved staying at the Poly and almost always go and visit. While we have lots of points, somehow we never stay there because we are way to spoiled with the size and comfort of OKW....It is truly like being "Home" ;)

Can you explain this? I don't have all the lingo down yet!

I think what Dr Tomorrow is saying is with DVC we get a discount on Annual Passes. With an AP we get discounts on Disney resorts. Therefore we can book non-DVC resorts we what to try with our AP discount.

Dr T. Please correct me if I got it wrong.

I'm checking out POFQ with our AP discount before we check into BWV this year.

I was just wondering if after buying into DVC if any members ever miss the old resort they stayed at? I know from reading the boards that the rooms themselves are not even comparable (in DVC favor of course).

Just wondering about theme of resorts and the nostolgic factor from family trips prior to DVC. I know it is still possible to book the "old" hotels although the point value would be killer and never an option for my fiscal self.

Long story short....Do you ever yearn for staying at non-Dvc resorts and have to talk yourself into why DVC resorts are better because that is where you put your money?

Dixie Landings will always be home.

We have stayed at just about every resort and still stay at non-DVC resorts from time to time. Our favorite non-DVC remains AKL. We are looking forward to a GF stay -- maybe a surprise for a 30th anniversary in a few years. Our DVC stays tend to be a week in length while non-DVC tend to be shorter 4 night stays.

Thanks for all of the good input. Sounds like some still miss the old places and some have never looked back. I guess there are options either way...

I absolutely LOVE Wilderness Lodge so I guess I will have the best of both worlds when/if I buy. Of course I have not experienced any other so who knows?

Yea...........Another who appreciates the finer quality of the original name for that resort :goodvibes

Not stay at some of the other WDW resorts????? No way!!!!!!!!
We do both and will always do both. We love the DVC resorts, but also love a 2/3 night weekend stay at YC, BC, BWI, AKL, Poly, WL..........
The beauty of it is: a few weekend nights in a conceirge room at our favorite non DVC resorts-- with an AP discount--- is a cheap stay with top notch service, because all the other nights are DVC pt nights. We love it!!! Best of both worlds for us!!!!
