Hi all: My daughter is starting state college in September. I want to plan a trip but the times that the college crew get off are the Holidays which are very pricey times to visit Disney. I am just wondering if anyone has or has a child who miss somedays at college to go on a disney vacation?
What ,if any, were the reactions to this from the school?:confused3
Thanks for any info on this subject.

I don't think it would be a good idea for your daughter to miss college classes for a trip to Disney. College level classes are faster paced than high school ones. Your best bet might be to look at going either right before your daughter's semester begins, or right after it ends. The week after New Years is a pretty good time and also look at early to mid May.

Freshman year I went the week after finals. 2nd week in May. It wasn't very crowded.

Sophomore year I had 6 days in between my last day of regular classes and my first day of finals (had finals late during finals week) so I went in between! About the same time as the year before, not very crowded.

Junior year I missed Thurs and Fri classes on a week where most of them just happened to be cancelled and left very early Thurs, spent the afternoon Thurs, all of Fri, most of Sat, and flew out Sat night. Then relaxed and caught up on Sunday. We went in early Nov and it wasn't crowded.

This year I will be going for Spring Break. Expecting it to be crowded!

I don't think the school itself will say anything. It depends more on the individual professors attendance policy and your daughter. For a freshmen class I personally wouldn't do it just because those classes are fast paced and since she will probably be one out of hundreds of students in the class, if she falls behind it will be hard for her to catch up.

My son is in the midst of his freshman year and my husband is also adjunct faculty so we went the first week of January...... spring semester classes didn't start until Monday 1/14 and we were at Disney 1/4 thru 1/11....first and second day was just a little crowded......from the 6th thru 10th crowd level was very low. We've also visited in early to mid May (most colleges are done
very early May) and crowd levels are very manageable, however, the weather is starting to get hot and humid by that time.....mostly high 80's.

I missed a week of classes when I was a junior... it may have been too overwhelming as a freshmen however. If you can handle waiting to plan the trip until August, maybe your daughter can get the syllabus beforehand to see which weeks may be a little slower.

I missed a week last year, won't miss any this spring, but our fall trip i will miss a week and a half... Prepare ahead of time by getting homework and arrange to take quizzes and tests and you'll be fine...

Well thanks for all your help. I know its not a good idea but I guess part of me was hoping it would be ok. I don't want her to start off and fail behind.
I just have to figure out a way to go when she's not is session.
The crowds and the heat I can handle its the prices for those times that are the hard parts. I think perhaps after the new year would be the best bet but if I can manage, late August.
Thanks again all.:lovestruc

I would agree it's a bad idea. I took a DL weekend trip a couple semesters ago and though I only missed one day I had to drop a class because it was hard to come back from.

I don't know your daughters situation, but for her next semester/quarter you could ask her to give herself Mondays or another day off in her schedule or just see if she can take Tues/Thurs classes, that way you could plan a trip in six months and she wouldn't miss any classes.

I only take classes tuesdays and thursdays largely because of work and vacations lol. that way we can go fri, sat, sun, and monday :o)

the best thing to do is just wait and feel out a class and the professor. If your daughter feels like she can handle missing a day then by all means go ahead. but make sure she really thinks about it and takes it seriously.. i know its disney and all but this is her future.

In my experience, professors are usually understanding if you give them advanced notice right at the beginning of the year. If a person is going to make it or fail as a freshman, missing 2 days of classes isn't going to make or break them. Pick a weekend, but not one thats midway through the semester, and go for a thurs-sun trip :-)

When is your daughter's winter break...What my family has done is go in early January (after the new year) up until soon before classes restart...otherwise I would recommend late may after finals...being in college is tough, my entire family (all the cousins, aunts, uncles, etc...) just went on the Disney cruise ...Without me... because I was in college and just couldn't miss the classes...and yes it really stunk not being able to go but I know I would fall way behind...I just missed 3 days of classes because I had such a severe case of the flu and I am really struggling to catch up...because there are so many notes to catch up on and now teach yourself...not fun! Good luck planning your trip though!
