Hi guys,

As a parent who would love love LOVE to have the entire family at WDW, i'm wondering your thoughts on missing classes for a few days for a trip. (students with As & Bs, not missing before, caught up on work ect.)

Its been a few years since i was in college (ahem ahem, cough cough ;) ) so i'm wondering if / how / under what circumstance would professors excuse a student for a few days. Literally, what reason would you give, or what would they find acceptable - if anything?

I realize i'm opening myself up to flames etc., but before i suggest it, i wanted your expert opinions.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, i'm not the traditional "college age" but i'm 29 working on a combined BS/MS degree full time, as well as working full time. I actually missed a week of school this president's week, without much difficulty. I let all my professors know at the beginning of the semester that I had planned a "family reunion vacation" well before I decided to go back to school, and that I would be missing a week in February. I did any assignments that would be due that week ahead of time and handed them in before I went. Depending on the program, class load, that may or may not be difficult for some to accomplish. Nobody really had a problem and it took a little work afterward, but I was able to catch up without any difficulty. It really is an individual thing, ask your student! I think the levels of leniency would depend on the professor, program, and makeup of the student body at that school. It's worth a try though!

Thank you so much, sounds good! I just wanted to get some feedback before i suggest it.

Anyone else have ideas?

Oh OH pick me! LoL. It really depends on the type of classes your student is taking, and if your studen'ts professors are amiable to them doing the work beforehand.

As far as type of classes are concerned... I am an accounting major and missing even one day of class could put you weeks behind without the proper preporations. Where as my roomate (whom I adore) who is a theater major rarely went to class and still maintained a 4.0 (same as me) last semester. Granted these are extreeme cases but the point is based on class work and work load per class you can make a sound decision.

Also you regardless of how much work they will be missing and need to make up, you need to have them talk to his/her professors. They know what they are going to teach and what tests they are going to give and many have very strict attendance/make up policies. Most professors honor honesty over a sappy story (that they will most likely know is fake) so just have your student tell them exactly what is going on (I went to the Renesance Festival one year and had to miss a Friday and I had a professor actualy give us money for his suveniers) and they should be ok.

Good Luck!!

I am leaving for disney on my be-lated honeymonn (8 years later~lol) :rotfl2:

I am going to be missing a week of class, granted i only have one clas MWF and one on MOnday nights. My ohter courses are on-line and very easy to get ahead in. I was going to tell my professor that i had some family thing and would be out for the week, like telling her that the friday i leave. I kno i am lying but this is the first trip i have been on since we have been married.

Am I doing a bad thing or should i tell her that i am going on my honeymoon??? :confused3

Either way I am down to a week!!!! :cloud9: princess:

I think i posted this on your other thread, but i will post here, in case i didnt.
I have taken a week off every semester for a vacation, and some sick days thrown in now and again.
i am an early childhood education/sociology major in my junior year at a state university...Some professors do have attendence policies, but most of mine have not. Ijust tell them we have had a family vacation planned and that i will get al lthe notes that i missed. One time i took an exam before i left so that i didnt miss..I have never had any problems and am planning on missing a week starting april 22..I told my professors the truth-i have a chance at a free trip and i will be missing class...
I have been fortunate to have been on these great trips and i wouldnt trade it for the world..And next semester, ill be missing a week for a cruise, so i say go for it!

Alright I'm only a college freshman, but personally, I wouldn't do it. If I only had to miss one day of classes (like go for a long weekend or something) than it'd be a possibility but honestly, I don't think I would. I've been to every class this year, and still find it incredibly easy to fall behind. We just cover so much information in one class, that I cannot imagine missing a week's worth of classes. Most of my classes do not have an attendance policy (I'm at a state school), but some do, and while some of my professors are good about making exceptions for illness, vacations wouldnt really fly with them. Even when I'm sick I try to drag myself to class, but that's just me. Course my mom is a teacher, so that's the way I've always been

It is very very possible. I am an accounting major and have never had a problem missing 2-3-4 days for a vacation. I never tell my profs the exact reason I'm going to be missin, but they never seem to have a problem as long as I tell them ahead of time. I think it just depends on what your profs feel like that day. I'm graduating in May and I think I missed classes two of my 4 years to go to WDW. So, I think it can be done and I would suggest trying to do it because family vacations will leave memories for a lifetime.
