I am trying to Orlando for my first time in Sept and I do not have a cell phone. Was told that it is cheaper for me to get a prepaid loaded cell phone with minutes already on it when I get there one that is already loaded with minutes. Can these be purchased in the Orlando airport and also can I use this phone to call back home to relatives in Canada. Thanks

I am going to move this to our Canadian Trip Planning Board.

I've got a US prepaid phone but I bought it at a US Walmart. To my knowledge there are no pre-paids sold in MCO. This question comes up a lot.

If you need one, find on to purchase online and have it shipped to your hotel. You will probably need a Wifi device to be able to got online to activate the phone.

I know what they say about "assuming", but since you don't already own a cell phone, I'm going to assume that you wouldn't be comfortable tracking down a t-mobile prepaid phone and setting up a Google Voice account to obtain free calling back to Canada (all of these steps can be found in the sticky).

Given the circumstances you outline in your post, you should look at Roam Mobility, which is a Canadian company through which you can purchase a phone and short-term plan that will give you calling both in the US and back to Canada. There are other (and better options), but this is likely the easiest option for you.

In order to avoid "sickening" data rates on our Telus phones in California we recently bought a pair of Virgin Mobile "burners" while at DL. They were cheap (less than $60 for two including $40 pre-paid minutes) but we found them EXTREMELY difficult to activate. Once done though they worked great for calls and texts in the parks but they specifically COULD NOT be used to call outside the US.

I was also going to recommend ROAM mobility. Their rates are super cheap and the phones are not too bad for what you will need it for.
