I'm watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer with my kids for like the 100th time! It's obvious what's wrong with most of the toys on the Island of Misfit Toys. But what's wrong with the doll? Do they say it and I've been missing it all these years? My husband and I have had our theories over the years but we're still just not sure. Any ideas?

Found this on Wikipedia....

Misfit Dolly is an unnamed, but seemingly normal girl rag doll. Her presence on the island is never explained on the special. According to NPR's Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me! news quiz show broadcast December 8, 2007, Arthur Rankin, in an interview, revealed that the Misfit Dolly's problem was psychological, caused when she was abandoned by her mistress and suffered depression from being unloved.

I guess you can find almost anything on Wikipedia!!!! :laughing:

:lmao: Now that just explains it all! I never thought of looking up Misfit Dolly on Wikipedia. I had no idea "psychological issues" would qualify her for being a misfit toy!:rotfl:

HERE YOU ALL GO!!! :goodvibes

The Island of Misfit Toys

The "Island of Misfit Toys", another canonical addition to the original story, is an island sanctuary where defective and unwanted toys are sent. Among its inhabitants:

King Moonracer - a winged lion who acts as the island's ruler. King Moonracer is responsible for flying around the world each night in search of unwanted toys.

Charlie-In-The-Box is a misnamed, but otherwise seemingly normal jack-in-the-box who acts as the island's sentry. Charlie is voiced by Carl Banas, who also voices several other toys in this scene.

Spotted Elephant
is a polka dotted elephant and the island's valet.

Bird Fish is a toy bird who swims instead of flies. This leads to a plot hole in the final credit sequence, when he is tossed out of Santa's sleigh without benefit of the parachutes/umbrellas being handed to the other toys.

A misfit cowboy who rides an ostrich.

Trainer, a train with square wheels on its caboose.

A toy boat that sinks rather than floats;

A squirt gun that shoots grape jelly;

An airplane that can't fly,

A bear that rides a bike and a scooter.

Not to get off topic, but Santa is SOOOO mean in this story. :sad2:

Since that show is so sexist and awful (I refuse to watch it but that is another rant)

I've always said in a joking way -- mind you I am a very staunch feminist female that she was rejected for being a female!

Am I the only one totally freaked out by the misfit toys?! :eek: :scared:

hahaha this is actually kind of funny you posted this because we are always wondering the same thing! My dad thinks it could be that she doesn't have a nose. :confused3

Thank you!

Santa makes fun of Rudolph, laughs at him for a physical difference and won't let him play with the others. Only when Rudolph can do something to benefit him does he even start to be nice to him. I really do not like the show. My children have seen it but I am always talking about how Santa is inappropriate and how he should have behaved.

Yes, I know it is just a story but still.... :confused3

Why can't they just fill the squirt gun with water instead of jelly? :confused3

This makes more sense:bride:

She and Jessie (from Toy Story 2) should start up a therapy group.
