Misconceptions People Have

That people thought we are rich when I was a teacher and my wife is a cardiac nurse. We have modest house, 3bdrm 2 bth, 3 vehicles, vacation to Disney every year or other year. We weren't even making 100k combined, lol. We just budget well and don't waste money on stupid things.

But what about Canada? It's all the same there, right?
LOL. Apparently some here think so, at the least the ones who dog piled on me because they didn't believe a bakery in their town listed fruit cake as "Traditional Canadian Wedding Cake". :love1:

Up here those 2 occupations would bring in $150+ together. Along with very good pensions.

I remember being next to a couple of men who lived in Texas. I think one was a native while the other was a transplant. They were well educated, and one was a doctor. I said I figure they wouldn't live up to the stereotype that Texans all wear cowboy boots.

Both of them pulled up a pant leg each to show that were wearing cowboy boots.

That would have been very nice for us but that'll never happen my lifetime. Pensions are pretty good, not great but pretty good. Floor nurse here starts out at $20-21/hr and first year teacher is around $35k. It takes about 15 years of nursing to get to 50-52k/ yr and with the new pay scale rules for teachers, most will never see 50k/ yr in their 30 yr career now. Truly sad that a new teacher with school insurance and a child, the child qualifies for free and reduced lunch most likely being free.

I am a Public Safety Communications Officer. My in-laws think I "just answer the telephone and relay the information to the officer" We work 10 or 14 hour shifts and they cannot understand why I am so tired.

Well the most common misconception about where I live - New Jersey - is that everybody talks like and acts like Tony Soprano or the people from Jersey Shore and this is nothing but a over populated, congested hell hole.

I pass 7 farms on my way to my kids school. The school is approx 7 miles away and I go through two stop signs and zero stop lights on the way there. In fact my town has no stop lights at all and no sidewalks either.

ETA and I live in Northern NJ and am less than 90 minutes outside of NYC.

Originally from Bergen county and now in Burlington county. People seem to think NJ is like Jersey City. We are surrounded by farms.

Interesting to hear. It is definitely a stereotype in the northeast, or in larger cities. I think it also has to do with the fact that when you plan a funeral you hand over a check or credit card for thousands, and possibly tens of thousands, of dollars. There often seems to be a disconnect in the goods and services provided vs. ‘that dude makes a lot of money’. I’m glad to hear that in some parts of the country we’d just be thought of as normal!

All the funeral homes in my hometown are family owned & in each case, the family IS doing quite well :)

Huh. I never would have ever assumed a funeral director was well off. Must be a regional thing ;)

Misconception - winters in MN are horrible. Well, I mean, they are snowy. And they are below 0 a lot, but there is still SOOOOO much to do. It's nice like you sit in your house for 6 months - you go out and play in it!

I dunno. I think Minnesota winters are pretty bad. LOL. They live up to the hype and then some. :-P

I think the misconception is that Minnesota is cold all the time. We have some darn hot (and humid) weather in the summer. Summer compensates for the rest of the year. Nothing better, anywhere, than a Minnesota lake on a hot July day.

I can verify that. I was afraid to move to NJ because I had this idea of what Jersey was, and it looked like the turnpike. LOL. We had a lovely home on 5 acres, and lots of green space around us. Morris County. Some of the nicest people I ever met were from that area of New Jersey.

That because I'm a fan of the Patriots, I/we are the most annoying fans.

Because I live in Massachusetts I must drive like a..... ok, maybe that one is true.

I lived in CT for 35 years, was in MA for 3 years, and have now been back in CT for a year. Sorry, but I found CT drivers to be far worse!

For me, the misconception is that since I'm a new mom, I'm completely clueless. One of my "friends" is always calling me "silly," "dummy," and "stupid," but somehow my kid is doing just fine. Hopefully he won't end up being a brat like her kids (and yes, they really are brats. For example, she brought them to our tag sale the other day and she said nothing when they started throwing OUR items at each other).

People think because I have no kids that I don't like them, even though I taught kindergarten! People think that I love all things Disney because I love the parks. To be truthful, I have seen very few movies and have limited ability to identify some of the princesses. People think because I don't identify with a religion that I have no faith. I have faith, it just doesn't conform or have a name.

I think the biggest misconception though is that (this could be "why are you telling me this" ish) but I am asexual. Not transgender (my sex and my gender match at female), not fridgid, prudish or repulsed. I love the skin I'm in, I have an amazing girlfriend (got rid of the non-amazing one a few years ago LOL) and am NOT a lonely spinster.

I have heard new parents get a lot of unsolicited advice. Not even neew ones, I guess. Onee of our shoppers has a son with tourettes. He's about 18 now but I've known him for about 6 years. His tic is snarling and his word is "of". Combined with a snarl - it sounds like eff-off if you're not paying attention and he shouts. We're used to it and other customers are fine, his mother is an awesome lady. I heard this woman telling the mother "you better get him checked out." Like it didn't dawn on her once in 18 years to get help and advice.

I agree. We use to vacation in southeast Minnesota in the summer time.

Since I live in California and have encountered many transplants from around the US (and beyond) I've been well versed on the extremes of Midwest weather. Some of the jokes I hear about living in coastal California is that we "don't have any weather".

How are the mosquitoes? I've heard the worst are in Alaska. Something about survival of the fittest when there's such a limited season to breed.

DH worked for a bunch of years as a funeral director. People thought I was nuts for continuing to work. Why would you need to work? Your husband is a funeral director! Just drive around in his Cadillac and have his babies! Just fill in the amount you want on that blank check he gets every two weeks! Wake up call people: He is merely an hourly employee of a large corporation. All that money you just spent on the funeral, yeah, the guy making the arrangements did not get handed that amount of money. The stereotype of funeral directors making tons of money stems from when funeral homes were family businesses. And just like if you owned a bakery or other business that did well, when you put up all the risk and money, you keep all the reward. Today almost no one wants to keep a funeral home, and there is one large corporation that is more than willing to buy you out when your kids turn up their noses at the thought of taking over the family business. The percentage of funeral homes owned by them is scary. (But legal, per antitrust monopoly laws.) DH recently left the ‘death care industry’ (yes, a term they actually use) and is back in his old career. We are now doing so much better!

Additionally, from having college friends who then went on to medical or pharmacy or law school. Doctors and pharmacists and lawyers make sooooo much money. Um, do you want to see their student loan bills? Or their malpractice insurance bills? Yes, they should eventually reach a point where they are way far ahead of the rest of us, but then again, they put in the time and study to reach that goal.

ETA: That is actually the first time I ever mentioned on the DIS what DH did for a living. Why? I thought people would assume all sorts of things about us if I mentioned what he did. Why is she always on the budget board? Her husband is a funeral director! Yeah, misconceptions.
:wave2: Small world...I interned at an SCI home. Pretty sure that must be what you're talking about.

The misconceptions tend to have about me these days:
  1. Because I have a beard (short) and a ponytail (as long as it will grow), I'm obviously an ex-hippie. Nope. Retired Army officer.
  2. Because I'm a native Texan, I love the University of Texas and the Dallas Cowboys. Nope. I don't care about UT, and I don't care about football at all, but I do root for Baylor (where I got my MS).
  3. Because I'm a Southerner, I'm a redneck conservative. Nope. Social liberal, economic conservative.
  4. Because I live in Austin, I'm a sign-carrying liberal. (See No. 3 above.)
  5. Because I'm a baby boomer, I've got a nice pension waiting when I retire. Oh, Lord, I wish!!
