Minolta Maxxum 50mm f/1.7 AF Prime Lens

anyone here use this? It seems to get good reviews from what I have read. Do you think this would be a good lens for WDW in addition to my 18-70 3.5-5.6 kit lens. We also want to get this to get better portriats of our baby (due in May). Would this work for all those? I"ve learned a lot in the last few weeks of research since we got our sony A100k DSLR, but there is so much i still do not understand.

it is an excellent lens, whether it's a good lens for WDW or a good investment depends on the type of photography you plan to do, if you want a good lens for low light /non flash photography then yes,

I personally am on the fence on getting that lens, I've managed for years with slower lenses by using a tripod and bumping my iso, or using my flash for all my indoor shots..

pardon my ignorance here on this, but is this lens only good for indoor/low light or will it take great outdoor photos of the scenery (landscape) in daylight as well? I guess I'm asking if this could be a good walk around lens as well, or just for a specific task?

BTW we have learned a lot from you guys here on this board and we really appreciate all your expertise. Looking forward to becoming a contributing member here one day!!

Prime lenses are typically sharper than zooms and are usually better at all lighting conditions. The problem is that 50mm might be too tight for true landscape shooting.

it might be a little sharper than your 18-70 but your 18-70 would be abetter walk around lens for outdoor daylight photography, the 18 gives you more on the wide end, which would be better for landscapes,

a better walk around lens, although also more expensive would be a 28-75 2.8 lens

or if you wany more coverage if you can get your hands on a used minolta 35-105 it's a pretty good lens..

for years all I used were the following 2 lenses..a 35-105 and a 100-300

Thanks for all the info gang purchased a excellent condition used 50mm f1.7 tonight online, but also found the 35-105mm for a great price and the flexibility would be nice at times...is it overkill to have both plus the kit lens or should I skip the 35-105mm since I have the 50mm. My head is spinning with all the info we've read tonight!! To think this was all started by wanting to take a better picture of a mouse

if you want more on the zoom end minolta makes a 75-300 which would give you a lot of reach, it's not the fastest lens, but it's a lot cheaper than going with a 70-200 2.8...
