Ok, I keep telling myself there's NO WAY I'm going to FL to do the Minnie, but this morning, there is $54 each way airfare.

I'm afraid that I can't keep up a 15 min pace. Are they really strict about it?

I have never done an official 5K, but I do it at the gym on the TM almost weekly and I'm at about 46 min give or take. The distance doesn't concern me as I'm a walker, but the time does?

Any suggestions?

(and NO, I STILL haven't found the copy of MFM I bought to read! GRRRRR!!!!!)

Hi Julie--

From what I hear, the time is pretty strict at the Marathon, but I'm not sure about the Minnie. I would guess that it would be similar to the marathon, because the reason for the time limit is so the parks can be opened.

We now have about 6 weeks until the Minnie, so you would need to ramp your distance up by about 6 miles at a time, but your time is actually ok (for 3.1 miles, 46 minutes is slightly under 15 minutes/mile). I think it is possible, yet risky. My time actually ramped down pretty quickly, but they don't really recommend adding more than 10% of your current weekly mileage per week. Do you think you can get up to a long run of say, 7 miles by two weeks before the race (1 month)?? If you think you can do that, then you probably have time to taper, and make the race in time. If you don't think you can do that, then you can't.

Of course, these are all of my ramblings with my personal experiences worked in-- the key you have to consider is that you don't want to hurt yourself, and trying too much too fast can lead to that-- then you would definitely not be able to do the minnie!! Do you go to a gym?? If so, maybe you can talk to one of the trainers there.

let us know what you decide!!

Hi Julie!

I am doing my first race, the Minnie 15k. I am absolutely petrified about the 15 min. pace!

From what I've read here, at least during the F&W 10k, they aren't too strict about the 15 min. pace. I plan on trying to run as much as I posisbly can, and walk the rest really fast. Right now, I walk 4 mins., then run 1 min. I think I am about ready to run more than 1 min. though. It sounds pretty pathetic, but any running is huge for me! ;)

Oh, and many people have told me running or walking on a TM is harder somehow and that once I start training outside, I might just surprise myself with faster times.

COME DO THE MINNIE!!!

That's the way it is for me! I run/walk much faster outside then I do on a treadmill. I've heard that some people are affected the opposite way, though-- they find it harder outside then on a treadmill. Definitely try a couple long runs outside before your first race, though!

goldcupmom-go for it!!! I am another one that can go much faster outside than on the TM. I can wog at 13:15 pace but on the treadmill to get below a 15 min pace is running for me & about kills me. I have 2 friends that are coming with me to the Minnie who are hoping they are not as strict about the sweeping. For the 1/2 they let us know ahead of time(on the website) about the sweep points & what time you had to be there to avoid getting swept. But for the Minnie , they have not mentioned it at all. They had the 15 min pace for the 5k after the 1/2 & my dad was no where near it & he did not get swept. I am hoping for my friends sake that they are not going to be sweeping for this race & will just let them finish as quickly as they can. Get serious about that training & come on down! It will be a blast!

I am another one for outside training. I could not do a mile on the TM under 20 minutes without killing myself, but I can do a mile in just under 15 walking at a fast pace. I can do it in just under 13 if I set a pace were I jog for a bit then walk for a bit then jog for a bit etc. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! :thumbsup2

I heard, and I am not sure how true this is, but they do not start the 15 min. until the last person crosses the starting line??? Does anyone know how true this is?????

That is true for the marathon that they don't start the "pace clock" until the last runner has crossed the line-- which they estimate at about 10 minutes. I would assume they would do the same thing for the Minnie, although, with a lot less runners, it may take a lot less time for everyone to cross. In fact, I think they would have to-- it wouldn't be fair to say you have to train for a 15 minute pace, and then be at the end of the line, and need a 14:30 pace to finish.

:goodvibes I hope they don't sweep too soon on this one. I can powerwalk at a pace of about 15min per mile, when I do only 2-3 miles, it is about a 14min pace....but when I go the distance it takes all the time I can get! LOL! :)

When I did the 1/2 marathon in 2005, I was nowhere near the pace before race time, but during race time, motivation and determination kicked in and I finished.....so I will not underestimate myself for this one! Gotta have faith!

Minnie is chip timed....
There is a bit more wiggle room with strictness--they do start later..but you will still be finished before the parks open-which I think is their goal.

Just received the final instructiosn today and no mention of pace or sweepers. (I woudln't "count" on it--but it is a possibility taht they are not as strict).

HTH!
