So I'm seeing the closer you get to a date the cheaper the prices tend to be. Why not just wait to book something until a few weeks out? Am I missing something?

If you wait the price could just as easily go up.

For car rentals we've found its best to book now and then keep checking for a better rate.

We do the same thing. The price usually goes down. But there have been times where it just kept going up. Especially if you're going at a busy time of the year. A few years ago my sister's family came with us Thanksgiving week. She waited to book her car and ended up paying more than double what we paid.

You can't lose anything by booking early and changing if the price drops.

I just booked a minivan on budget yesterday for a 9 day rental starting march 14th. the price dropped $45 over night. So i jumped on it.

i will keep watching it to see if it goes down.

There are so many companies though so really if you secure the best price now..a better price may be with a different company later....

So then you cancel the original reservation and book with the new company.

We're going during Spring Break and booked our minivan back in June. The rate has tripled since then!!!!! I keep checking and hoping for a drop, but during busy times and lots of rentals, probably won't happen based on my prior spring break experience......
