Minimum Direct Points Needed

And actually if you calculate tax, it is $303.52 and and $257.73!

We back to back 2 vacations and then skip about a year, so no renewal rates for us. So, 2 sets of passes saved over $2400 for us.

At the time we bought our points, our difference between direct and resale was less than $3000. So, we're good as far as I'm concerned.
same here -- my 25 point contract is basically free now. :-)

I realized that benefit might not last forever, but based on the math stated above, I gambled it would be around for at least a couple of years to make it worth buying the minimum direct points required to get the full benefits, but mostly the Gold Pass. If they took the Gold Pass away though, I think DVC’ers would be livid and would be sure to let Disney know that.

It would also make buying direct a lot less attractive to purchasers -- and therefore -- a bad idea for DVC to do.

Also, technically, the first set of APs we bought with our DVC membership was during the promotion they were just running in 2017 - we paid Gold pass pricing for Platinum Plus pass. I didn't factor it into my "savings" calculation though. I just calculated it as buying a gold -vs Platinum since it's not a current offer. And I think they ran a 13 month offer before that and there was a 7 day ticket offer, too.....

I actually bought two sets of passes once I saw the originals didn't have an expiration date until 2030. :-) Going to be activating the second set this summer -- so hopefully they'll be good. They're still showing up as Platinum in my MDE account.

Dang I was not expecting this much activity from my simple question. Really appreciate each and every response here, you are all appreciated!

thread drift is a real thing -- I don't even remember what your original post was! :rotfl2:

2. The special events and places like top of the world etc. I just want to feel like a real member, this again could just be my irrational side, but again I’m going here to relax this isn’t an investment. For two dang weeks a year I want it my way haha.
FYI -- TOTWL is not a direct member perk. It is open to any DVC owner staying on points. The Epcot lounge is only for direct members -- but it isn't worth being an owner for. I've been inside it a grand total of 20 minutes over the course of 8 trips to WDW.

That said I’m also very financially conservative so my thought is try to buy something like 75 ssr points which I could recoup in annual pass savings in 5 years, after that it’s savings. Not ideal but at least it’s there. I would be hoping to use these for BWV during off peak times. The 78 point room, is this ever possible for a week? Or maybe even the cheap akv room? The only time we don’t want to go is summer to hot. Zero interest in wine or racing at least at this time. As long as I can grab a beer I’m good to go. Resort hopping during the week would also be ok, as long as Disney keeps the bag/food moving policy

Check out this posting by @skier_pete . It is highly useful.

Hmm that does put a wrench in my plans now I don’t know what to do again! A part of me is wondering if I’m a day late and a dollar short cause it’s becoming hard to see how I can win with this thing. Disney charges ridiculous amounts for direct points compared to just two years ago, if you buy resale you’re stripped of perks.

The logical brain says well buy ssr and then book at 7 months but even that is starting to look like a near impossibility unless I want premium rooms that would cost more than renting standard rooms.

Maybe renting is just the way to go then I can stay wherever I want.

it's not super easy to rent from VGF/BWV/BCV owners. There aren't a whole lot and the ones that do rent will charge a premium. Going through the point brokers can be difficult since they don't have a lot of premium owners willing to rent points through them.

Yup. Common misconception that you can just rent Beach Club or BoardWalk nilly willy, whatever room type you want, whenever you want. Which is why the "rent vs. own" argument was always stupid to me.

That’s why when I made decision to buy I used 15-30% off cash rooms. Renting is far too restrictive for my taste and way too hit and miss.

Same here. And Disney hotel rack rates vs. what I pay for DVC isn't even close (direct or not).
