Millionaire attraction to close at Disney-MGM - The interactive game modeled after the TV show will be replaced with a new ride.

Posted June 28, 2006

Walt Disney World is closing the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire -- Play It! game at Disney-MGM Studios in August and reportedly will replace it with a new indoor ride.

The interactive game, modeled after the once immensely popular TV show, will play for the last time on Aug. 19.

Officially, Disney confirmed Tuesday only that Millionaire is closing Aug. 19, based on the company's regular course of re-evaluation.

"Preparation will begin for a new guest experience in that sound stage later this year," said Walt Disney World spokesman Jacob DiPietre. He could not comment further about the new attraction.

Some Disney-MGM employees were advised of a new ride this year.

One, Bob Frazier, a veteran Disney employee who is a trainer, coordinator and attraction host at Disney-MGM, said the planned new ride was described to him as a top attraction, and as a cross between Universal Studios' Men in Black and Disneyland's Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin.

Both of those rides take people in cars through a maze of indoor scenes with robotic characters and other special effects. On Men in Black, riders shoot ray guns at aliens and tally scores. On Roger Rabbit, riders have some control over driving their cars.

The Disney Millionaire attraction premiered just a little late, April 2001, to take advantage of the peak popularity of the TV game show.

The show premiered in 1998 in the United Kingdom, then opened on Disney-owned ABC-TV in 1999 with Regis Philbin as host. It quickly became a huge hit on American TV, but by the spring of 2001 the TV show was dropping rapidly in the TV ratings. The show is now in syndication with Meredith Vieira hosting.

Disney-MGM's version is similar to the TV show, though participants compete for points instead of cash. The top scorer gets a prize, such as a vacation on the Disney Cruise Line. The studio seats 650 people, who all get to play. On Tuesday, it ran nine times.

Some industry observers said Tuesday the Disney-MGM game has probably run out of steam, just like the TV show.

"I think Millionaire's tired," said Jerry Aldrich of Amusement Industry Consulting in Orlando.

Steve Baker of Baker Leisure Group, an Orlando-based theme-park consulting firm, noted that most of the attractions along Disney-MGM's backlot area are fairly passive and said, "An icon attraction would be a good idea."

Still, Millionaire has its loyal fans, such as Lenard Summers of Brooklyn, N.Y., who were disappointed by the news. Summers, his wife, Paula, and three of their four children played the game for the first time Tuesday, after learning it from TV. He called the Disney-MGM version great because it's fun and educational, noting that one of his daughters posted the family's highest score.

"It's entertaining, and it makes the kids more studious," Summers said. "It's one of the few games you can play with the whole family."

Beth Olcott of Baltimore, who has played several times, also was saddened by the news. "That's a shame," she said. "That was a lot of fun."

I may be the only one, but I can't stand that it is closing. :sad1: :sad2: I was looking forward to getting in the hot seat when we go down in September/October for Free Dining! It was an enjoyable attraction that was a good way to get out of the heat, plus it was FUN. Oh well...another one bites the dust.

Since the game show was fading from our memories it was only a matter of time before they did this. I am looking forward to the "Midway Mania" replacement myself. Sounds cool.

Wrong. They'll buy the rights to "Deal or No Deal".

This has been mentioned on a previous thread, and I'll make the same comment......YAY! :Pinkbounc { and I really hate using the pinkbounce}

:sad2: I really liked this attraction and will be sorry to see it go.

I love this...and have been in the hot seat a number of times since 2001...never got the cruise nor the 500,000 pin, but have 250,000
I will really really really miss this
See the comment Mean Laureen created for me!
:sad2:

My DD and I have both made it to the hot seat. We have seasonal passes and will only have 2 days in August after the blackout, to get that cruise!!! :boat: Unless WDW lets us back in early again this summer, as they have in the past :wizard: .

So the new ride is like Buzz Lightyear! That will be awesome. We all love the BL ride.

Can't say I'm not glad Millionaire is going. Phelbin creeps me out and I never thought much of the attraction.

Millionaire is the favorite attraction of my entire family. I truly hope that they reverse the decision, but fear they will not. As I posted in another thread, I encourage anyone with an interest in the show continuing to write a letter. There's plenty of room at Walt Disney World for a new attraction without replacing one that is very popular with many people.

The problem is that the attraction is really not that popular. The last time I saw the show (on a very busy day) the theater was less than half full.

It depends on what time you go to the show. I attended every show on Saturday and some shows had very light attendance and others were pretty much packed to capacity. I think the scheduling of other shows and the parade plays a major part in the attendance at any given show.

We're totally bummed; my partner loves this show. She often says she'd like to spend the whole afternoon doing nothing else.

Rob is right. It depends which show you got to. The show just after lunch tends to be less crowded.

Like Rob, I have attended this attraction several times in a day. I keep on playing until I get onto the hot seat and then I may play a round afterwards or later in the trip. It usually takes one or two shows to make it to the hot seat. One trip my son and I each made it to the hot seat in our first two shows.

On our last trip, the attraction was fairly full to completely full most shows. This was duiring Easter and there were some rain that helped.

I like this attraction a great deal and will do my best to get onto the hot seat one last time before the attraction closes. My family will be at WDW August 3 to 7 and it will be fun to see how many family members we can get onto the hotseat.

Having repeat visits is a bad thing? I am not a florida resident and only come to WDW a couple of times a year (some years only one time a year). The attraction is somewhat unique. WWTBAM-PI is the only attraction for the people who like to see what a game show is like and who would like a chance to compete in a game show. I attended the filming of five episodes of the syndicated show during the Walk Up and Win promotion and it was fun to see how a real tv show was put together. The normal attraction show is actually fairly close to what goes on for the syndicated show.

Yes, there are some people out there who are good at the show. I have been on the hot seat a few times and hope to get on the hot seat one more time before it closes. There are others like out there and Disney is blowing off that audience.

The attraction that is going to replace WWTBAM-PI is not going to different from any of the other rides at WDW and could have been put into any of the parks or someplace else at MGM. WWTBAM-PI will be missed.

Clearly, the Doctor and I have a tag team approach going, but I couldn't agree more.

I've never made the hot seat; I have a very sloooww trigger finger, but my mind is agile and I did score 9th place when we were last there in December. If it weren't for my inspired choice of corned been and ... leprachauns (Sheesh), who knows where I'd be right now!
