Sheesh! I'm thinking of buying the darn cow for the amount I pay for a gallon of milk! The other day I was at Publix and I paid $4.99 a gallon for 1%. OMG!! What is up with this price??!! :scared1: I am really thinking of going to powdered milk (I haven't priced that yet either though).

Yikes! I guess I can be thankful I live in "America's Dairyland" and I got two gallons yesterday for the price of your one.

Luckily I can buy a gallon of milk at the commissary for $2.50 or so. Off post I know it's a lot more.

I've done powdered milk before. If you go that route, you could start out by keeping a container of it in the fridge for baking and cooking when you really wouldn't notice the taste. And, you can also mix half fresh milk with half powdered milk. I've done that before and no one even noticed.

I go once a week and buy 5+ gallons at Sam's Club. It is about $1 cheaper per gallon than at our grocery stores.

I have heard that milk is suppose to go down about $.20 but who knows.

I buy 3 gallons a week.:scared1: . I was thinking about buying powder milk just for cereal:scared: . Then I could be down to 2 gallons. Of course if they hate it then forget it.

I have an old pony.
No, she doesn't give milk, but she does eat grain.

Since January her food has gone up from $22 per hundred to $28 per hundred.

Cows eat grain too.

I am looking for milk and meat to go up a lot soon.

If you mix half and half (and put the mixture back into the milk container), they probably won't notice the difference :thumbsup2

Powdered milk is not a bad option.

I've gotten 20 quart (5 gallon) boxes for less than the price of 3 regular gallons at Aldi. (Sorry, I can't recall the exact price.) Right now, a gallon of skim milk is $2.80.

I've used the powder in recipes (baking mix, cocoa mix, bread machine mix, etc).

The powder when reconsituted is fine in recipes. You can mix a quart at a time to keep in a small container in the fridge.

When chilled, it's not bad in cereal either. Warm, just made, not so good.

We probably wouldn't drink it straight, though. The previously mentioned half powdered/half regular milk combination sounds like a good idea.

I've heard people talk about buying whole and mixing it half with water for 2%
Or buying 2% and mixing in water to get 1%.

Is this true? How does it taste?

I have been thinking about trying it.:confused3

The savings would be HUGE!

I buy powdered milk at Aldi. I use it for cooking, and for when the girls want strawberry or chocolate milk. When I'm making oatmeal (with water), I like to throw in a couple of spoonfuls of dry milk to 'fortify' it, and my favorite bread recipe needs it. And it's nice to know you always have milk at home...I tend to forget what the milk situation is & it saves me from buying more fresh when I don't really need it. I'm a big fan, but even so, a box tends last quite a while.

That's not reduced fat milk, that's watered down milk. There's a huge difference!

I buy 5 gallons a week, organic. :scared1:
Cost? Anywhere from $5.99-$7.00...and that is in small town, Texas.

my advice is to keep an eye on your local walgreens ad. they have it on sale every other week. this week at least in ohio it is 2.69 a gallon. I also know they have the half gallons on sale every other week for like 1.99 gallon. just my two cents!

Milk freezes well! Just be sure to take it out of the freezer before you need it because it does take a long time to thaw. I thaw it in the sink overnight and let it finish thawing in the fridge. Also, I give it a shake before each use.

I open up a gal., take out about 2 cups (because it will expand a lot) or so and then throw it in my freezer.

Milk is on sale right now for $2.77 a gal. Usually I pay about $3.59 per gal. I will be heading to the store soon for 6 gals.

I am starting to do the same thing.. I went to Sam's last sunday and bought 5 gallons at I think $3.39. I am just about done with the last one today. I am going to go to Costco in the morning and pick up 5-6 galloons. We go though 7 gallons a week and the corner store by me sells the costco brand for $4.49 vs $3.39.

Costco is much closer but I hate the new milk container design. The hole is so much bigger and I am always spilling it.

I switched when I moved to the US because I don't go through a whole quart in a week. When hubby got here our milk usage went up but we just can't afford regular milk. We buy a box of Publix powdered milk, which makes about 5 gallons, for $6.99. We use it in everything....coffee, hot chocolate, hot tea, milkshakes, cereal, oatmeal, instant pudding (works really well!), baking, cooking, you name it. We'll even drink it straight (tastes about as bland as skim). Neither of us can tell the difference between it and 2% or skim...AND it has less fat and sugar in it than regular milk!

That one box will last us most of a month, which leaves us more money for fun things....like cinnamon buns! :)

I just bought a gallon yesterday for $2.69. Our milk is the same price no matter what skim, 1%, 2% or whole. I guess the increase hasn't hit us yet, we have a lot of dairy farms around here. My mom used to keep powdered milk in case of snow storms (we lived in the country) and I thought it tasted bad. Better if it was ice cold, we are used to skim now and I can't even stand the taste of 2%. Iremember drinking fresh milk and the cream would come to the top, it was so thick!

I actually did that a few times (with whole milk). I figure the kids were drinking plenty of milk and it just added some water to their diet (which they needed anyway). They didn't notice a difference in taste.

Powdered milk prices have been rising since the fall. I used to buy a 5-gal-equivalent box for $8.99 at ShopRite, now it's $12.99 ($17.99 across town at Pathmark!). We use a box and a half each month, for every milk use but for cereal and fresh drinking.

I pay $3.69/gal for 1% milk at Costco or Happy Harry's (Walgreens). The same milk is $4.19+ at grocery stores.
