Milk prices

i just got back from the grocery store and they were having a big sale for Arbor Day. I bought milk today for $.97 a gallon :earseek: They had a note on their doors saying that as of May 1 it is a national thing and milk prices will rise. I usually pay $2.69 for skim and $2.99 for vit. d. We go through atleast a gallon of milk a day because that is all i feed the kids that i babysit for since they ususally never get it at home--maybe i will have to start feeding them juice--it will be cheaper:p

Yes,

We are a big milk producing area in SE Minnesota, and this increase has been all over the news for some time now.

Yes, milk today is $1.99 on special (gallon). Still $2.59 so far regularly.

herc.

We have a micro-dairy here in the Trenton, NJ area, and milk (my favorite beverage) as of yesterday was $.99 a half gallon (bought 10 0f them!) I am afraid :scared: to see what the price might be next week when we go. Got a big surprise in the egg department though. 2 weeks ago jumbo eggs were $1.49.... last night they were $1.09!!!:D

Saw on the news the other day that milk prices are skyrocketing soon... buy it now and freeze it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saw a notice at Sam's last week that as of May 1, milk prices would go up. I bought 14 gallons at $1.47 each. With 4 boys we go through alot of milk. :teeth:

Promise land ( milk in a glass contanier) $2.19 Quart

When we cant get that we buy a gallon for $1.99 - $2.50

Chocolate milk must always come in the glass bottle or its just not worth drinking:teeth: $2.19 a Quart

Cheaper brand of 2% milk at my Krogers was $3.69.

Which one? I remember living in Trenton years ago (early to mid 70;s) and there was a small milk/dairy place which had a red silo on the property. The bags had red Block lettering on it, and was near a church.

Once you said that it jogged my memory. I'd love to know if it is the same place.

I bought some the other day and paid $4 something a gallon, it was pretty shocking.

That was from one of those classy Italian cows though, Debbi. :p :teeth:

Our Target Greatland had milk for $2.29 a gallon when I was there yesterday. I was surprised, I have been paying closer to $3.00.

I believe my Publix brand is 3.39 a Gallon. McCarthur is 4.19 a gallon. Glad I don't drink milk....:p

I paid $2.59 earlier in the week at Super Target, and was afraid to go get more yesterday after reading this thread. No need (yet), it was $2.59 yesterday too.

Aaaauuugghh! $4.43? I just finished the milk in my coffee. I guess I'll be in for sticker shock at the store today. I'll let you know.

As the wife of a dairy farmer, I can tell you that it is not the farmer making the money. Farms are going out of business because they just can't make enough money, thus the loss of supply.

Farmers are paid by the 100 weight of milk, not by the gallon. Right now, we are paid approx. $14 per 100 lbs. of milk. Do the math, you will see we are not the ones making all the money, the middle man is.

Sure, with 100 cows milking, we get a heft check every month, but once you pay mortgage, insurances, payroll, feed bills, vet bills, maintenance bills, taxes, etc. there is not much left to live on.

If you have the opportunity to visit a local dairy farm, do so. You will see how much work these people put into making milk. My husband is gone every day from at least 5am until at earliest 8pm. He works 7 days a week, 365 days a year. No days off or holidays from him. The cows HAVE to be milked every morning, and every night. The cows do not take a vacation, so neither do the farmers. When he is not milking, he is feeding, cleaning, in the fields planting/harvesting the corn to feed the cows, cutting/baleing the hay. Not a job for the faint of heart, but to farmers, it is not a job, its just life.

Enjoy your milk, and think about all that has to be done so you can have it. :D

Thanks waughzee! It is a shame that it is a middle man making all the money.

I would have no problem paying the higher prices, if more of the money went to the farmers. I know the farmers are never paid what they are worth.

Just bought a gallon this afternoon. It's still just $1.49!
